Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preoccupation with the finest period furnishings of the upper classes of English society has, until very recently, dominated the literature on antique furniture, resulting in a neglect of the humbler, but equally important furniture used in ordinary homes over the centuries. While furniture historians in North America and in many European countries have long accepted the vital importance of their own vernacular - or "country" - furniture, recognising it as an essential element of social history, the English equivalent has often been treated almost with contempt by British writers and relegated to the back pages of native furniture studies. This attitude is now recognised as unacceptable, however, and the vernacular furniture of England has accordingly become the focus of intensive research. Making use of much of this recent research, English Country Furniture throws fresh light on the uses, dates and stylistic differences of the everyday furniture found in cottages, farmhouses and town houses of ordinary people over a span of some four centuries. Special emphasis is placed on the 18th and 19th centuries in recognition of the much higher survival rates of true "folk" furniture from more recent times. Each of the examples illustrated, most of them previously unpublished in book form, is accompanied by a detailed caption giving timber, an accurate date-range and an extensive description, including such information as regional characteristics, finish, stylistic influence and construction. This is the only major work devoted to the evolution of both national and regional vernacular furniture in England from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. It is also the first to stress the full importance of Oriental influence on 18th-century furniture design; the first to make use of fresh and exciting material salvaged from the Mary Rose; and the first to pinpoint precisely the inventions of several items of machinery used in furniture-making.

Book excerpt: For the past thirty years this book has, in its various editions, outsold all others on British antique furniture simply because it is unique in explaining what to look for when assessing the value of individual pieces. In this, the fifth edition, the huge financial importance of patination and colour has been explained and illustrated - something which has become increasingly important in recent years. This classic guide consists of over 1,600 photographs of furniture found in shops and auction rooms throughout the country with the author's down-to-earth comments on important features which affect individual prices. The reader will come to understand the rules and prejudices which apply while the eye will become aware of gradations of quality. He will come instinctively to assess the workmanship and how all this affects the final price tag. This is, above all, a reference book for the practicing collector and dealer, a work from which the memory may be refreshed and points checked. Each item is clearly referenced. This enables the annual price revision list to be compiled with a ready cross-reference. The list is available in January/February each year on a private subscription basis and details are contained within the book. This new edition contains both £ Sterling and US $ prices. AUTHOR: John Andrews is both a founding member of, and the first author published by, the Antique Collectors' Club. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English furniture of the eithteenth century has never been more admired or sought after than it is today. This is largely because it possesses a simplicity, a sober elegance and a practical usefulness which make it ideal for modern houses. Such furniture owes as much to good design as to the craftsman's skill, and that is why, in this book, the Victoria and Albert Museum has made an attempt to carry out--for the first time--a systematic survey of the great mass of eighteenth-century designs which has come down to us. The Museum is in a good position to embark upon such a venture, because it possessess one of the largest collections of English furniture designs in existence, a collection which includes copies of nearly all the relevant pattern books, some of them very rare, and a considerable number of original drawings, which tend to be rarer still, because they were all too often lost or destroyed, once they had served their purpose. --back cover.

The book is arranged in chronological sequences (17th century through the early 20th century) by type of furniture, from tables and settees to desks and bookcases. Butler and Johnson have included some important information for the novice and the experienced collector: the sources of furniture used as models for the illustrations; lists of museums, art galleries, and special displays of outstanding collections of furniture; a selected bibliography and a glossary; the anatomy of a piece of furniture; and a brief history of the periods of furniture and furniture makers. Highly recommended for public libraries and other subject collections.
