Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engines of Social Progress There are no politics in this book. A similar claim has been put forward by many writers, and, as a rule, it has not been substantiated, for politics are all pervading, and more often than not blight the fairest fruit of human endeavour. There is in the popular mind an apparently hopeless confusion of politics and economics, because the latter have become the toy of politicians - their arsenal of argument and the plat form oi their promises; parties have been formed nominally according to the natural division of men into schools of thought. Little by little expediency has compelled the inclusion of theories that the original school would perhaps never have admitted, so that certain groups are finally committed to certain politics, and that men, originally their opponents on vastly different issues, find themselves naturally inclined to combat the introduction of measures which the founders of the party might have sup ported. Yet nothing is further removed from politics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Basis for Social Progress Criticisms of the principles promulgated herein, which have been as freely invited as offered, have dwelt most with the novelty of the plan proposed. Conservatism must ever play its part. Yet in other fields of activity in America novelty has scarcely been an insurmountable barrier to progress. If our proposal be a novelty, as it has been heralded by those educators who have been approached for eriti cism, it is novel only in the field of education. The principles are ancient ones, long operative in every branch of scientific research. The newness lies, not in the principles, but in the application of those principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Nation's Peril: Social Ideals and Social Progress It is not altogether in the field of analogy, however, that the comparative method is fruitful in anthropological and sociological researches. The differences between man and his poor relations of the lower animal types are quite as interesting and instructive as the likenesses. If reversion to animal traits and conduct throws important light on the problems of criminal anthropology and degeneration in human societies, it is in quite another direction that we must turn for our explanation of those progressive social and individual tendencies which have raised man above the brute creation and inspired him to transform and regenerate himself and his world-environment. Man, as far as we know, is the only animal capable of creating ideals - of projecting the synthetic imagination into the realm of future possibilities, and of erecting there beacon-lights which will guide and inspire him to higher and ever higher achievements. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Social Development The whole work comprises in the first five parts the Special principles, and in the conclusion the general principles of social development, and consequently covers the whole science of culture, or what is to Auguste Comte the same thing, the whole Of social science or Sociology. At the same time it will acquaint the reader with the results of this new and glorious, although unfortunately still imperfect, science. Since Sociology, in spite of its brief existence, has already increased to such a gigantic extent that a complete state ment would perhaps require as many volumes as this work contains leaves, only the most important fundamental principles Of development will be considered throughout, and all details which are not absolutely necessary for the characterization of the phases and for the comprehension Of the process of development will be conscientiously excluded. Each part is composed Of a series of detailed statements, which although members of a whole, are yet written as independent works, each one of which can be read and understood by itself, although naturally not with the same profit as if read in their entirety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health and Social Progress The population of the earth in 1800 was approximately 600,000,000; in 1900, it was about 1,600,000,000 - an increase of nearly 270 per cent. If, during the twentieth century, there should be a similar increase - and the indications are all in that direction - the population in the year 2000 will be about 4,320,000,000. The question arising then will be, Where shall we get food? The time will not even then have arrived when, according to Fourier, our scientists will be able to turn the rocks of our mountains into bread and cakes, or the brine of the oceans into most delicious lemonade. The question will have to be faced in a matter-of-fact way instead of dreaming about it in a romantic fashion. Roughly speaking, two forms of answers have been given - that of the pessimist and that of the optimist. Among the pessimists we may reckon all those whose profession or attitude compels or inclines them to look backward. They have paid a heavy price for doing so, since no one can look into the past constantly without getting a wry neck and having his thought twisted. These people gloomily predict an increasingly more severe struggle, since, if it is only with the utmost difficulty that the present population maintains itself, what must happen if the population is nearly three times as large? Civilization will be doomed, or be confined to a few favored spots; anarchy will prevail, and the second state of mankind will be infinitely worse than the first, because men have learned how to do more harm than ever before. The optimist believes in human nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In this book, one of the foremost sociologists of the present day, turns his gaze upon the key figures and seminal institutions in the rise of sociology. Turner examines the work of Karl Marx, Max Weber, Karl Mannheim, Georg Simmel, Emile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons to produce a rich and authoritative perspective on the classical tradition. He argues that classical sociology has developed on many fronts, including debates on the family, religion, the city, social stratification, generations and citizenship. The book defends classical perspectives as a living tradition for understanding contemporary social life and demonstrates how the classical tradition produces an agenda for contemporary sociology.
