Book Synopsis A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers by : Ethan J. Brue
Download or read book A Christian Field Guide to Technology for Engineers and Designers written by Ethan J. Brue and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our technology shapes the way we live, interact, work, play, and even worship. Technology and its power are both old and new—as is the wisdom we need to envision, design, build, and use it well. For Christians passionate about developing technology, it's not always clear how their faith and work intersect. How can designing and using technology actually be a way of loving God and our neighbors? Veteran engineers and teachers Ethan Brue, Derek Schuurman, and Steve VanderLeest provide a field guide for fellow explorers working with technology. Using numerous case studies, historical examples, and personal stories, they explore issues such as: biblical themes and passages that relate to technology the ethics and norms involved in technology design how engineering and technology tap into human dreams for a better world Along the way they acknowledge the challenges arising from technology but also point to the wonderful possibilities it offers us and its ability to contribute to the common good. For Christians studying and working in engineering, computer science, technical design, architecture, and related fields, this book is packed with wisdom and practical guidance. By sharing what they have learned, the authors encourage readers to ask harder questions, aspire to more noble purposes, and live a life consistent with their faith as they engage with technology.

Book Synopsis Mean-Field-Type Games for Engineers by : Julian Barreiro-Gomez
Download or read book Mean-Field-Type Games for Engineers written by Julian Barreiro-Gomez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book comprise an appropriate background to start working and doing research on mean-field-type control and game theory. To make the exposition and explanation even easier, we first study the deterministic optimal control and differential linear-quadratic games. Then, we progressively add complexity step-by-step and little-by-little to the problem settings until we finally study and analyze mean-field-type control and game problems incorporating several stochastic processes, e.g., Brownian motions, Poisson jumps, and random coefficients. We go beyond the Nash equilibrium, which provides a solution for non- cooperative games, by analyzing other game-theoretical concepts such as the Berge, Stackelberg, adversarial/robust, and co-opetitive equilibria. For the mean-field-type game analysis, we provide several numerical examples using a Matlab-based user-friendly toolbox that is available for the free use to the readers of this book. We present several engineering applications in both continuous and discrete time. Among these applications we find the following: water distribution systems, micro-grid energy storage, stirred tank reactor, mechanism design for evolutionary dynamics, multi-level building evacuation problem, and the COVID-19 propagation control. Julian Barreiro-Gomez Hamidou Tembine With such a demand from engineering audiences, this book is very timely and provides a thorough study of mean-field-type game theory. The strenuous protagonist of this book is to bridge between the theoretical findings and engineering solutions. The book introduces the basics first, and then mathematical frameworks are elaborately explained. The engineering application examples are shown in detail, and the popular learning approaches are also investigated. Those advantageous characteristics will make this book a comprehensive handbook of many engineering fields for many years, and I will buy one when it gets published. Zhu Han

Book Synopsis Beyond the Lab and the Field by : Eike-Christian Heine
Download or read book Beyond the Lab and the Field written by Eike-Christian Heine and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Lab and the Field analyzes infrastructures as intense sites of knowledge production in the Americas, Europe, and Asia since the late nineteenth century. Moving beyond classical places known for yielding scientific knowledge, chapters in this volume explore how the construction and maintenance of canals, highways, dams, irrigation schemes, the oil industry, and logistic networks intersected with the creation of know-how and expertise. Referred to by the authors as “scientific bonanzas,” such intersections reveal opportunities for great wealth, but also distress and misfortune. This volume explores how innovative technologies provided research opportunities for scientists and engineers, as they relied on expertise to operate, which resulted in enormous profits for some. But, like the history of any gold rush, the history of infrastructure also reveals how technologies of modernity transformed nature, disrupting communities and destroying the local environment. Focusing not on the victory march of science and technology but on ambivalent change, contributors consider the role of infrastructures for ecology, geology, archaeology, soil science, engineering, ethnography, heritage, and polar exploration. Together, they also examine largely overlooked perspectives on modernity: the reliance of infrastructure on knowledge, and infrastructures as places and occasions that inspired a greater understanding of the natural world and the technologically made environment.

The Kaizen Event Fieldbook brings this all together as an indispensable reference for lean leaders and implementers within any industry and for use at any stage within the lean implementation journey. One of lean's defining characteristics is learning by seeing, doing, and studying. In context with lean theory and lean leadership principles, readers will gain an understanding of the essential "whys" and "hows" of kaizen event standard work and event management, as well as a proven means to sustain the gains. The Fieldbook's multi-phase approach addresses strategy, pre-event planning, execution, and follow-through. Practical examples, over a hundred figures and tables, and many real-life "Gemba Tales" provide for an enriched learning experience. Also included is a chapter on the deployment of a kaizen promotion office, a glossary, and two appendices, which offer blank forms and an overview of daily kaizen.
Book Synopsis A Whole New Engineer: The Coming Revolution in Engineering Education by : Mark Somerville
Download or read book A Whole New Engineer: The Coming Revolution in Engineering Education written by Mark Somerville and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Revolution Is Coming. It Isn't What You Think. This book tells the improbable stories of Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a small startup in Needham, Massachusetts, with aspirations to be a beacon to engineering education everywhere, and the iFoundry incubator at the University of Illinois, an unfunded pilot program with aspirations to change engineering at a large public university that wasn't particularly interested in changing. That either one survived is story enough, but what they found out together changes the course of education transformation forever: - How joy, trust, openness, and connec- tion are the keys to unleashing young, courageous engineers.- How engineers educated in narrow technical terms with a fixed mindset need an education that actively engages six minds-analytical, design, people, linguistic, body, and mindful- using a growth mindset.- How emotion and culture are the crucial elements of change, not content, curriculum, and pedagogy.- How four technologies of trust are well established and widely available to promote more rapid academic change.- How all stakeholders can join together in a movement of open innovation to accelerate collaborative disruption of the status quo.Read this book and get a glimpse inside the coming revolution in engineering. Feel the engaging stories in this book and understand the depth of change that is coming. Use this book to help select, shape, demand, and create educational experiences aligned with the creative imperative of the twenty-first century.
