Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a new product from the design stage to large-scale production in a profitable, efficient manner can challenge the processes of even the most advanced companies. Lapses in these processes drive up the cost of new products, and hinder their launch into the marketplace. Effective Transition from Design to Production provides an expeditious roadmap that considers every phase of production. It identifies customer requirements, discusses product concept, and covers master scheduling and risk analysis, as well as design considerations, prototypes, and tooling essentials. Among other things, it also explains how to identify and augment facility requirements, initiate production ramp up, evaluate packaging, and institute defect control. Takes an Integrative Approach that Allows Managers to Understand the Big Picture As the author introduces and explains each stage, he also offers guidance as to when to involve outside parties including potential providers of raw materials and subcontractors who may take part in the production and assembly process. He presents the seven stages of the production process— system design, detailed design, manufacturing planning, production readiness, low rate initial production, and production—in sequential order, examining how each one leads to the other. This allows readers to not only grasp the basic concepts crucial for success at each stage, but also to visualize the big picture so that they can anticipate problems, eliminate inefficiency, and make informed managerial decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers appear in recent social science as central, though somewhat elusive, figures. They play a particularly critical role in the various attempts to understand the impact of 'science-based' industry on the class structure of advanced capitalist societies. In this book, Peter Whalley brings these engineers into sharper focus. He argues that engineers should not be seen as members of a glamorous 'new class' of professionalized knowledge workers, nor as a radicalized 'new working class' or partially de-skilled technical proletariat. Rather, they should be viewed as 'trusted employees,' selected, socialized, trained, and rewarded to perform the discretionary tasks necessarily delegated by employers in the complex organizations of advanced capitalism. The book draws extensively on observations and interviews to compare engineers' work and understanding in the high- and low-tech settings of two British companies: "Computergraph," an advanced electronics firm, and "Metalco," a traditional British engineering giant. Whalley compares the technical work structure of Britain with those of France and the United States. He argues that the impact of technological change on class structure is critically mediated by nationally specific modes of organizing technical work and producing trusted workers. The book goes beyond cultural explanations of these national variations to examine how they are created and reproduced in the organization of work and the structuring of occupations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generally speaking, scheduling is the procedure of mapping a set of tasks or jobs (studied objects) to a set of target resources efficiently. More specifically, as a part of a larger planning and scheduling process, production scheduling is essential for the proper functioning of a manufacturing enterprise. This book presents ten chapters divided into five sections. Section 1 discusses rescheduling strategies, policies, and methods for production scheduling. Section 2 presents two chapters about flow shop scheduling. Section 3 describes heuristic and metaheuristic methods for treating the scheduling problem in an efficient manner. In addition, two test cases are presented in Section 4. The first uses simulation, while the second shows a real implementation of a production scheduling system. Finally, Section 5 presents some modeling strategies for building production scheduling systems. This book will be of interest to those working in the decision-making branches of production, in various operational research areas, as well as computational methods design. People from a diverse background ranging from academia and research to those working in industry, can take advantage of this volume.

The 66 revised and extended full papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 124 papers presented at the conference. The papers are organized in 3 parts: production process, supply chain management, and strategy. They represent the breadth and complexity of topics in operations management, ranging from optimization and use of technology, management of organizations and networks, to sustainable production and globalization. The authors use a broad range of methodological approaches spanning from grounded theory and qualitative methods, via a broad set of statistical methods to modeling and simulation techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalization of manufacturing is a key development in most industries over the last decade. New technologies like e-commerce, genetic algorithms, and neural networks have to be adapted to the manufacturing environment. This book deals with methods and tools suitable for designing, managing and controlling processes within the supply chain. Virtual Enterprise and Extended Enterprise are the terms which describe the challenges for global production management. The implementation of global production management requires integration of business processes, technical and organizational aspects. The main topics of the papers selected for this book are therefore: Strategic manufacturing issues and design of virtual enterprises; Supply chain management; Performance measurement and management information; Business process engineering; Modeling and simulation; Advanced scheduling approaches and decision support; IT systems to support global production . The book contains case studies as well as reports on research findings. The papers represent a summary of current issues which have been presented at the International Conference on Advances in Production Management Systems (APMS) in September 1999. This event was sponsored by the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP), and was organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK), Berlin. The authors are leading experts within the international community in the field of production management. Global Production Management is suitable as a reference for researchers and practitioners in global manufacturing, supply chain management, logistics and IT services, and consultants. It can also be used as further reading for advanced courses on management and manufacturing.
