Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Education, Vol. 10 After all, it is of little importance whether my reflections are of the one kind, the consensus of your thoughts put into words, or of the other kind, original. As is usual with the work of an engineer, it is relatively immaterial whether it is original or not. It is all important that it be right. I would like to help toward correct conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineer His Work and His Education This book is dedicated to those who are considering engineering as a life work. Over fifty thousand stu dents are now studying engineering in colleges and universities of the United States, and about fifteen thousand are each year entering such training courses. They should know something about engineering as a profession and about the college course which helps them to prepare for it. The recent investigation of engineering education carried out with the support of the Carnegie Corporation through the initiative of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Educa tion has disclosed that too frequently the applicant for an engineering course has an erroneous or a very vague notion of the nature of engineering practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Education After the War There are several tendencies Of this period which are indicated by a study of the college catalogues and of the replies to inquiries. These tendenc1es, although more evident at this time, have been gradually developing, and in some cases they have been evident for years. There is some indication that more special courses are desired, such as compressed air engineering. Industrial engineering, heating and ventilating engineering; but there is a strong current of feeling that we should develop men fundamentally and broadly and leave the specialties to be acquired after graduation. Thus at the State Univer sity of Iowa the course Of the first three years in engineering is common to all engineers, and only two-thirds of the work Of the various branches of engineering in the senior year is different. Others report two years in common, and many report one year in common. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Education, Vol. 10: Bulletin of the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education; October, 1919 This is so much a matter of informal daily contact between professor and student that no rules can be laid down. It will always be dependent upon the temperament and sympathetic understanding on the part of the teacher and it is possible that this beautiful relation may be the best thing that a stu dent gets out of his college life. The fine service that goes to build up a boy's character is more an asset for citizenship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Engineering Education: Prepared for the Joint Committee on Engineering Education of the National Engineering Societies The present bulletin has been prepared under conditions somewhat different from other publications and bulletins of the Carnegie Foundation. This study of Engineer ing Education arose out of the action of a joint committee on engineering education, representing the principal engineering societies. More than three years ago the Com mittee had gathered a considerable amount of material bearing on the subject, and had come to the opinion that the work could be best carried out by the employment of some one trained in applied science, who should devote his entire attention to the study, working under the general direction of the Committee and in touch with it. The Carnegie Foundation agreed to appoint such a man and to bear the expense of the study. Professor Charles R. Mann, of the University of Chicago, undertook the work under these conditions, and the report which follows is the outcome of his studies under the general supervision Of the Committee. The discussion of Professor Mann's report by the Committee forms the introductory chapter. It will be understood that the report did not contemplate a study or examination of the engineering schools of the United States, altho a limited number of typical schools were visited and studied by Professor Mann. The point Of view from which the study was undertaken was the following: Fifty years ago, when the engineering schools of the United States were inaugurated, they began their work upon a definite teaching plan and one that had at least pedagogic consistency. The course was four years. The first two were spent mainly in the fundamental sciences - chemistry, phy sics, mathematics, and mechanics; the last two years mainly in the applications of these sciences to theoretical and practical problems. In the half century that has passed this course of study has been overlaid with a great number of special studies intended to enable the student to deal with the con stantly growing applications of science to the industries. While the original teaching plan remains as the basis of the four-year engineering curriculum, the courses given in most schools have been greatly modified in the effort to teach special subjects. As a result, the load upon the student has become continually heavier and bears unequally in different places and in different parts of the course. In addition there is a wide spread feeling that under this pressure the great body of students fail to gain, on the one hand, a satisfactory grounding in the fundamental sciences; and on the other hand, do not fulfil the expectations of engineers and manufacturers in dealing with the practical problems with which they are confronted on leaving the engineering schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Practice and Education Taking up next the ports and the waterways, we find that, their boats being small, the works that they needed, and that they therefore executed, would not look large from our modern point of view; but, considering the times, some of them were magnificent pieces of engineering. As to ports, when they could they built them in a river, erecting quays of stone or wood. They took advantage of the shelter afforded by natural features, and built protect ing breakwaters when they needed them. When they could reach dry land to build upon they always did So, but when not, they sunk large stones, or cradles filled with masonry, locating them by means of divers, or else they built dikes, and ran in liquid concrete, which, on solidifying, formed, as it were, a solid rock. They had a great many ports all along the Mediterranean. They had, however, no efficient system of dredging, and their ports were always silting up. Of course, their navigable rivers formed the natural com. Mercial highways, as indeed they did everywhere before the introduction of railroads; hence, they carried out such improvements as they could, and such as were needed at thetime, by removing obstructions from the river beds and by building sea walls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses to Engineering Students Just here it is pertinent to mention that the compilation has not by any means been undertaken as a money-making venture - far from it - because the Editors have not only done gratis all the work involved in its preparation, but also have themselves paid the cost of typesetting and providing the plates, in order that the book may be sold to engineering students at the actual cost of paper, press - work, binding, and distribution, the latter being reduced to an absolute minimum by cutting out all possible profit thereon. This has permitted of the book being sold to students of engineering, when ordered in large quantities, at seventy-five cents per copy and to the general public in single copies at one dollar. The Editors were guided in this action by the following reasons: First. They want the book not only to be widely read but also to remain permanently for reference in the libraries of those who read it.
