It breaks down the design process into phases and then into distinct steps, each with its own working methods. The book provides more examples of product development; it also tightens the scientific bases of its design ideas with new solution fields in composite components, building methods, mechatronics and adaptronics. The economics of design and development are covered and electronic design process technology integrated into its methods. The book is sharply written and well-illustrated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: vi The process is important! I learned this lesson the hard way during my previous existence working as a design engineer with PA Consulting Group's Cambridge Technology Centre. One of my earliest assignments involved the development of a piece of labo- tory automation equipment for a major European pharmaceutical manufacturer. Two things stick in my mind from those early days – first, that the equipment was always to be ready for delivery in three weeks and, second, that being able to write well structured Pascal was not sufficient to deliver reliable software performance. Delivery was ultimately six months late, the project ran some sixty percent over budget and I gained my first promotion to Senior Engineer. At the time it puzzled me that I had been unable to predict the John Clarkson real effort required to complete the automation project – I had Reader in Engineering Design, genuinely believed that the project would be finished in three Director, Cambridge Engineering weeks. It was some years later that I discovered Kenneth Cooper's Design Centre papers describing the Rework Cycle and realised that I had been the victim of “undiscovered rework”.I quickly learned that project plans were not just inaccurate,as most project managers would attest, but often grossly misleading, bearing little resemblance to actual development practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Integrated Product and Process Design and Development (IP2D2) method is quickly becoming the new standard for the rapid creation of competitively priced, high-quality products. IP2D2 indicates, in the broadest sense, the overlapping, interacting, and iterative nature of all of the aspects of the product realization process. The method is a continuous process whereby a product's cost, performance and features, value, and time-to-market lead to a company's increased profitability and market share. This new text/reference reflects the sweeping changes this approach has brought to traditional engineering design courses and to industry. Carefully organized, with sections on each major stage of the approach, Integrated Product and Process Design and Development: The Product Realization Process is the first complete treatment of this new direction in engineering. The book is designed to help you cultivate an attitude toward design that encourages creativity and innovation, while considering the equally important considerations of customer requirements and satisfaction, quality, reliability, manufacturing methods and material selection, assembly, cost, the environment, and scheduling. Extensively class tested in senior- and graduate-level engineering design courses at the University of Maryland, the book gives equal time to conceptual and practical aspects. As each concept is introduced and explained, two book-long examples provide you with a realistic sense of how a product's creation progresses through its various stages. Numerous checklists and other practical guidelines help you learn to apply the IP2D2 method to your own work. Students and newly graduated engineers will appreciate the modern perspective that more nearly reflects what they will encounter in practice than what is obtainable in traditional texts. For more experienced practicing engineers, this is the new information they need to keep up with recent rapid changes and stay marketable today and in the future.

Book excerpt: The need for manufacturers to make new products, diversify existing products and remain globally competitive is increasing. Engineering textiles: integrating the design and manufacture of textile products covers many aspects of product development and design conceptualization for both technical and traditional textiles. It also discusses several approaches to the fiber-to-fabric engineering of various textile products.Part one discusses fiber-to-fabric engineering in the context of product development and design of fiber-based products. Part two discusses the different types of fibers, yarns and fabrics suitable for the production of traditional and function-focused textiles. Chapters include key topics such as structure, characteristics and the design of textiles. Part three concludes with a discussion of the development of specific fibre applications, ranging from traditional textile products through to technical textiles such as transport and medical applications.Written by a highly distinguished author, this book is a pioneering guide to textile product design and development for a broad spectrum of readers, ranging from engineers in all fields, including textiles, material, mechanical, electrical, civil, chemical, polymer and fiber engineers. It is also suitable for textile technologists, fiber scientists and for those involved in research and development of both traditional and new-generation textile products. - Reviews aspects of product development and design conceptualisation for both technical and traditional textiles - Analyses material selection including structure and characteristics of various fibres - Examines the development of fibrous products for transportation, medical and protection applications

Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom holds that high wages, high capital costs, and worker inflexibility have cost America its ability to compete in the world manufacturing marketplace. This book demonstrates that U.S.-based manufacturing can compete in terms of quality, product features, and timely deliveryâ€"the real measures of competitiveness in the 1990s. The committee identifies attributes that attract manufacturers to given locations and assesses the attractiveness of the United States as a location for different kinds of manufacturing. The volume dispels myths that have guided management decision making in the past and offers recommendations to promote the United States as a manufacturing site. The volume discusses new approaches to understanding and controlling costs. With case studies from three important industriesâ€"consumer electronics, semiconductors, and automobilesâ€"the book explores factors in site location decisions, highlighting advantages the United States can offer as a manufacturing site over low-cost rivals.
