This creates the need for a so- ware infrastructure that enables ubiquitous mobile and collaboration systems (UMICS). The anywhere/anytime/any means paradigm is becoming the major challenge in conceiving, designing, and releasing next-generation information systems. New te- nologies, like wi-? networks and 3rd-generation mobile phones, are offering the infr- tructure to conceive of information systems as ubiquitous information systems, that is, systems that are accessible from anywhere, at any time, and with any device. Ubiquity is not yet another buzzword pushed by emerging technologies, but is mainly a means to support new business models and encourage new ways of working. This new wave of UMICS will exploit the knowledge developed and deployed for conventional infor- tion systems, but will also need new concepts, models, methodologies, and supporting technologies to fully exploit the potentials of the enabling infrastructure and to be ready for the challenge. Moreover, people need to move across organizational boundaries and collaborate with others within an organization as well as between organizations. We would like to thank the members of the Program Committee and the reviewers for their e?orts in selecting the papers. They helped us compile an excellent scienti?c program. For the di?cult task of selecting the 25 best papers (14% acceptance rate) and 17 short papers each paper was reviewed by at least three reviewers (except some out-of-scope papers).

These proceedings are the result of a considerable amount of hard work. Beginning with the preparation of submitted papers, the papers went through the reviewing process. This process was supported by online discussion between the reviewers to determine the final conference program. The authors of accepted papers revised their manuscripts to produce this fine collection. DEXA 2005 received 390 submissions, and from those the Program Committee selected the 92 papers in these proceedings. This year the reviewing process generated more than 1000 referee reports. The hard work of the authors, the referees and the Program Committee is gratefully acknowledged.

Book excerpt: Workflow management systems support the execution of business processes: they require the modeling of the processes, they drive the actual enactment of process instances, and they document the business process execution. Many different modeling languages and systems have been developed for the design and representation of business processes and workflows as a consequence of different requirements, different purposes, as well as different schools and modeling philosophies. The differences are partly on a conceptual level in the sense that the modeling languages offer different concepts and constructs, and partly on the representation level where basically the same constructs are represented differently (e.g. text- or graph-based). This book makes two important contributions to workflow modeling. Firstly, it provides a metamodel based on abstract modeling concepts, which copes with representation differences of workflow descriptions. Secondly, it introduces a set of equivalence transformations on workflow models. Such transformations are an important tool for workflow developments as they allow representing workflows differently for different purposes. These transformations are used in algorithms for checking the satisfiability of temporal constraints in workflow definitions. Using this apparatus made it possible to develop a sophisticated time management system for workflows, which not only checks temporal constraints but can also be used to develop time plans for workflow execution.
