The number of passengers is increasing and new transport modes enter the system day after day simultaneously with new mobility behaviors. As a result, users usually find themselves more confused when choosing between several possibilities to go from one place to their destination. For the sake of helping them to efficiently navigate through this intricate transportation scheme, an efficient Travelers Information System (TIS) has to be built. Thanks to such a system, the transport operators seek not only to provide passengers with optimal itineraries, but also with efficient and reliable solutions in case of disruptions. In fact, commuters do not only seek short time travels, but they usually consider several other criteria such as comfort and effort. An efficient routing system should therefore take into account the various needs and preferences of each passenger. Besides, transport modes are often prone to delays. Thus, handling uncertainty is also a very important aspect of practical journey planning systems. Moreover, the proposed multimodal routes should not only be feasible in a static case, but also robust against the dynamic and stochastic variations of the transport system. Furthermore, crucial constraints should be taken into account such as the capacity limitation of vehicles and the time complexity of the developed routing algorithms. The main objective of this thesis is to propose a formulation that adequately allows representing a multimodal network. Based on our formulation, we elaborate several efficient routing algorithms. In particular, we focus on solving the Earliest Arrival Problem in a single/multiple criteria context, both in dynamic and stochastic environments. To deal with the real time complexity issue, metaheuristics such as Genetic Algorithms (GA), Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) and Memetic Algorithms (MA) have been used. The computational performance of this work has been assessed by developing a real world route planning system, and solving real life itinerary planning problems defined on the transport network of the French Region Île-de-France that includes the city of Paris and its suburbs. The emerging computational results indicate that the numerous basic and complex instances were solved within a reasonable amount of time and the integration of the proposed routing framework as a module of an operational TIS is relevant.

Book excerpt: Traffic congestion has been one of the major issues that most urban areas are facing and thus, many solutions have been developed and deployed in order to mitigate its negative effects. Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) have been used over the past two decades to provide travelers with pre-trip or real-time traffic information. Most of the efforts have focused on providing timely traffic information at locations with regularly occurring congestion. ATIS can be used to provide travelers with pre-trip and on-route travel information necessary to improve trip decision making with respect to various criteria (e.g. minimizing delay, constraining travel to specific modes). Many jurisdictions within Canada and the United States have implemented the 511 travel information system that provides traffic information, road conditions and closures, traffic cameras, etc. Several studies were conducted on vehicle routing optimization methods in ATIS. Most of them consider passenger vehicles as the only transportation mode in their routing algorithm. Others that include two transportation modes are mostly based on shortest path algorithms. However, a probabilistic based route optimization approach could better capture the stochastic characteristic of road traffic conditions. This research investigates an adaptive routing methodology for multi-modal transportation networks. A routing algorithm based on Markov decision processes is proposed to capture short-term traffic characteristics of transportation networks. Graph theory is used to model typical travel behavior within a multimodal network. This thesis proposes to use special network modeling elements, e.g. super nodes, to allow the integration of public transportation schedule into the model via the publicly available predefined timetables. The proposed routing algorithm applies an iterative function to select the optimal transportation mode/route through the network junctions along a given path. The proposed methodology is applied to several real-world networks of motorized and non-motorized modes located in the central business district in Toronto, Ontario, and Montreal and Longueuil in Quebec. The networks include train, bus, streetcar, subway and bicycle transportation facilities. Microsimulation models of the networks developed in VISSIM and AIMSUN are used to estimate travel times along major arterials, for all transportation modes and for different traffic demands and congestion levels. The simulation models were calibrated using volume and speed data. The developed routing algorithm is applied to several scenarios in order to estimate optimal routes for a hypothetical traveler moving between two arbitrarily selected nodes in the network. The results identify the most efficient combination of transportation modes that the travelers have to use given specific constraints pertaining to traffic and transit service conditions. It is also shown that by applying the proposed algorithm to bus lines, transit agencies can have significant cost savings by rerouting their fleet. The results of the proposed research have the potential to be integrated into various Intelligent Transportation Systems applications by combining available traveler information services. It can assist travelers in making more informed decisions regarding their travel plans and provide transportation agencies with an overall assessment of the system and its performance. For example, it can be used to minimize the impact of congested traffic conditions on the overall travel time and/or cost incurred by travelers as well as the operating cost of transit agencies.

The main focus of the paper is to study how various heuristic and exact solutions, associated data structures affected the computational performance of the software developed especially for realistic transportation networks. For this purpose the authors have used Dallas Fort-Worth road network with very high degree of resolution. The following general results are obtained: (1) they discuss and experimentally analyze various one-one shortest path algorithms, which include classical exact algorithms studied in the literature as well as heuristic solutions that are designed to take into account the geometric structure of the input instances; (2) they describe a number of extensions to the basic shortest path algorithm. These extensions were primarily motivated by practical problems arising in TRANSIMS and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) related technologies. Extensions discussed include--(i) time dependent networks, (ii) multi-modal networks, (iii) networks with public transportation and associated schedules. Computational results are provided to empirically compare the efficiency of various algorithms. The studies indicate that a modified Dijkstra's algorithm is computationally fast and an excellent candidate for use in various transportation planning applications as well as ITS related technologies.

The authors find verification for their initial hypothesis that young men who would have been classed as alcoholic often stop or moderate their drinking as they age. They also find that there is considerable diversity in patterns of alcohol use among both women and men. Stephen J. Kunitz and Jerrold E. Levy study the histories of those who have died as well as those who have survived since the first study was done. They show that, compared to those who have survived, the former were more likely to have been solitary drinkers and were on average younger at the time when they were first interviewed. Book excerpt: The MATSim (Multi-Agent Transport Simulation) software project was started around 2006 with the goal of generating traffic and congestion patterns by following individual synthetic travelers through their daily or weekly activity programme. It has since then evolved from a collection of stand-alone C++ programs to an integrated Java-based framework which is publicly hosted, open-source available, automatically regression tested. It is currently used by about 40 groups throughout the world. This book takes stock of the current status. The first part of the book gives an introduction to the most important concepts, with the intention of enabling a potential user to set up and run basic simulations. The second part of the book describes how the basic functionality can be extended, for example by adding schedule-based public transit, electric or autonomous cars, paratransit, or within-day replanning. For each extension, the text provides pointers to the additional documentation and to the code base. It is also discussed how people with appropriate Java programming skills can write their own extensions, and plug them into the MATSim core. The project has started from the basic idea that traffic is a consequence of human behavior, and thus humans and their behavior should be the starting point of all modelling, and with the intuition that when simulations with 100 million particles are possible in computational physics, then behavior-oriented simulations with 10 million travelers should be possible in travel behavior research. The initial implementations thus combined concepts from computational physics and complex adaptive systems with concepts from travel behavior research. The third part of the book looks at theoretical concepts that are able to describe important aspects of the simulation system; for example, under certain conditions the code becomes a Monte Carlo engine sampling from a discrete choice model. Another important aspect is the interpretation of the MATSim score as utility in the microeconomic sense, opening up a connection to benefit cost analysis. Finally, the book collects use cases as they have been undertaken with MATSim. All current users of MATSim were invited to submit their work, and many followed with sometimes crisp and short and sometimes longer contributions, always with pointers to additional references. We hope that the book will become an invitation to explore, to build and to extend agent-based modeling of travel behavior from the stable and well tested core of MATSim documented here.
