Book Synopsis The Economic Implications of Climate Change in Britain by : Martin Parry
Download or read book The Economic Implications of Climate Change in Britain written by Martin Parry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change could have a substantial economic impact, particularly on coastal states where seas level rises will be felt most strongly. Among these, the British Isles are likely to be significantly affected, and they provide an excellent case study of the consequences for specific sectors of the economy. In this book, leading experts - including several authors of reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the UK Climate Change Impacts Review Group - examine the background and alternative scenarios for change, as well as its implications. They look in detail at water supply and management, agriculture and land use, energy, and the finance and insurance sector. In each case, they show how current activities will have to adapt and they conclude by evaluating the arguments for prevention now vs adaptation later. The changes in store could be huge, requiring the attention of academics and professionals from a wide range of disciplines and industries, as well as government action. This book makes a major contribution to understanding what is at stake.

Book Synopsis Applied Climatology by : Allen Perry
Download or read book Applied Climatology written by Allen Perry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Big freeze' conditions, storms, severe flooding, droughts, and heatwaves - recent extremes in weather, with their resultant physical, economic and human losses, highlight the vulnerability of society to changes in the atmosphere. Atmospheric pollution, urbanization, natural atmospheric disasters are causing dramatic changes in climatic environments. Applied Climatology examines the effects of climate on physical, biological and cultural environments. Specialist contributors from Europe, North America and Australasia examine the impacts of changing climates on the functioning and development of physical biological environments including glaciers, water resources, landforms, soils, vegetation and animals. Weather and climate effects day-to-day activities and lifestyles from the clothes we wear to the buildings we design, and the food and energy we produce. This book focusses on the relationship between climate and a wide range of human activities and responses relating to health and comfort, building design, transport systems, agriculture and fisheries, tourism and social, industrial and legal issues. Climate-environment relationships and impacts on human activities are predicted to change dramatically if global warming accelerates at the rates currently proposed. Applied Climatology examines the characteristics and consequences of the changing global climate and considers the future for both natural and human environments.

Book Synopsis Energy Projections for the UK by : Great Britain. Department of Trade and Industry
Download or read book Energy Projections for the UK written by Great Britain. Department of Trade and Industry and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of work by the DTI to update the Government's projections of future energy demand and energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. The three main uses of the projections are: to monitor whether the UK is on course to meet its existing international commitments to limit C02 emissions; to inform debate on possible future commitments particularly in the context of the first Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate (Berlin April 1995); and to monitor the general development and direction of energy markets, for example, as a background against which to view the potential future role of nuclear power in the UK.

Book Synopsis Small and Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems by : R Beith
Download or read book Small and Micro Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Systems written by R Beith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems are a form of cogeneration technology suitable for domestic and community buildings, commercial establishments and industrial facilities, as well as local heat networks. One of the benefits of using cogeneration plant is a vastly improved energy efficiency: in some cases achieving up to 80–90% systems efficiency, whereas small-scale electricity production is typically at well below 40% efficiency, using the same amount of fuel. This higher efficiency affords users greater energy security and increased long-term sustainability of energy resources, while lower overall emissions levels also contribute to an improved environmental performance.Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems provides a systematic and comprehensive review of the technological and practical developments of small and micro CHP systems.Part one opens with reviews of small and micro CHP systems and their techno-economic and performance assessment, as well as their integration into distributed energy systems and their increasing utilisation of biomass fuels. Part two focuses on the development of different types of CHP technology, including internal combustion and reciprocating engines, gas turbines and microturbines, Stirling engines, organic Rankine cycle process and fuel cell systems. Heat-activated cooling (i.e. trigeneration) technologies and energy storage systems, of importance to the regional/seasonal viability of this technology round out this section. Finally, part three covers the range of applications of small and micro CHP systems, from residential buildings and district heating, to commercial buildings and industrial applications, as well as reviewing the market deployment of this important technology. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Small and micro combined heat and power (CHP) systems is an essential reference work for anyone involved or interested in the design, development, installation and optimisation of small and micro CHP systems. - Reviews small- and micro-CHP systems and their techno-economic and performance assessment - Explores integration into distributed energy systems and their increasing utilisation of biomass fuels - Focuses on the development of different types of CHP technology, including internal combustion and reciprocating engines

Book Synopsis Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Developing World by : World Bank
Download or read book Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Developing World written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a congruence of several forces in the developing world that makes very timely the formulation of a strategy to address energy efficiency and conservation issues better. Many countries are becoming receptive to reforming the way energy is produced and consumed as they experience (a) rapidly growing demand for energy; (b) major constraints on available energy financing; (c) increased pressures to sustain the environment; (d) poor energy sector performance and unsatisfied customers; and (e) a reappraisal of the roles of government and of the public and private sectors in development. These factors are forcing developing countries to address long-neglected issues of energy wastage in production and end use. The World Bank now has an enhanced opportunity to further assist developing countries to improve their energy efficiency and conservation policies and practices. The paper provides a background on the evolution of developed versus developing-country energy efficiency and summarizes World Bank experience. It outlines the growing energy demand in developing countries and the accompanying financial and environmental problems that bring energy-efficiency issues to the forefront. The paper then sets out the potential for improved energy efficiency and the main reasons that efficiency has been so poor. Finally, it summarizes the priority actions for achieving energy efficiency in developing countries and sets out a four-point program for the World Bank.

Book Synopsis UK Environmental Policy in the 1990s by : Tim S. Gray
Download or read book UK Environmental Policy in the 1990s written by Tim S. Gray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central controversy running through this book is whether Mrs Thatcher's famous 'green' speeches of 1988 marked a fundamental shift by the Conservative Government towards environmentalism, or whether they were merely political rhetoric, designed to rule out a temporary surge of popular support for the Green Party. The conclusion arrived at is mixed: in some policy areas a definite shift has occurred, but in others it is 'business as usual'. An overall change of gear is still awaited.
