Book excerpt: This is the seventh directory of research, development and demonstration projects carried out within the field of energy, and of energy-related subjects, in the Nordic countries. The directory incorporates projects in progress during 1989. 2209 projects, most of which are financed by special public funds, are described. In addition to projects concerning energy sources, energy utilization and energy conservation, the directory also includes descriptions of research on environmental, ecological and socioeconomic issues, etc., where these are related to the main subject. The directory thus provides direct access to topical information relevant to a very comprehensive field of research. In the appendices the organization of the Nordic Energy Research Programme, and of energy research in each Nordic country, is explained, and the content and uses of the Nordic data base, Nordic Energy Index, are described. Names of people to contact, addresses, telephone numbers and other useful information, can also be found in addition to details about newsletters providing information on current research in some of the Nordic countries.

Book excerpt: This volume provides the fundamentals of involving stakeholders in collaborative modeling of energy systems, including the technical subsystem as well as its economic, social, environmental and political subsystems. It presents a Stakeholder-Assisted Modeling and Policy Design (SAM-PD) framework that can be applied by energy system developers, managers and decisionmakers to involve a wide range of stakeholders in group model-building on a larger scale. By illustrating the capabilities of the SAM-PD framework, the book introduces an actual case study of the Cape Wind Offshore Wind Energy project. This case study details the process by which the author brought together a large number of stakeholders to jointly model the Cape Wind energy system and its broader implications for the regional energy picture and the regional economy and environment. It also offers the most recent in-depth analysis of the Cape Wind project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "The Application of Systems Science to Energy Policy Planning" was held under the auspices of the NATO Special Programme Panel on Systems Science in collaboration with the National Center for Analysis of Energy Sys tems, Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, as a part of the NATO Science Committee's continuous effort to promote the advancement of science through international cooperation. Advanced Research Institutes are sponsored by the NATO Science Committee for the purposes of bringing together senior scientists to seek consensus on an assessment of the present state of knowl edge on a specific topic and to make recommendations for future research directions. Meetings are structured to encourage inten sive group discussion. Invitees are carefully selected so that the group as a whole will contain the experience and expertise neces sary to make the conclusions valid and significant. A final report is published presenting the various viewpoints and conclusions. The NATO Systems Science Panel noted that the systems approach is increasingly being applied to energy policy analysis and plan ning in both public and private sectors of national economies. Consequently, it seemed appropriate at this time to bring together experts to review and evaluate recent experience, in order to iden tify strengths and weaknesses in current prac tice, and to make recommendations for research directions.

Book excerpt: In September 1980, the Special Programme Panel on Systems Sciences of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) sponsored an Advanced Research Institute (ARI) on "Systems Analysis in Urban Policy-Making and Planning" which was held at New College, Univer sity of Oxford, from 21st to 27th September. This week-long meeting brought together 35 invited delegates from most countries of the NATO Alliance to discuss the impact which syst~ms analysis has had and is likely to have on urban affairs. The manuscript was submitted to the publisher in June of 1982. Although the goal of the ARI was to assess the impact of urban systems analysis as seen through the eyes of those closely involved in such work, the meeting also addressed opportunities for future research and development, and therefore in this book we have attempted to synthesize discussions at the meeting with this in mind. But before we describe the structure of this book, it is worth recounting in a little more detail the intentions and organi zation of the meeting, for this has had an important effect on the type of papers produced here, the way they have been written, and the issues they address.

Book excerpt: The lecture notes presented in these pages were originally developed for use in the Energy Management Training Program (EMTP), sponsored by the Office of Energy, U. S. Agency for International Development. This program, held at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the Institute for Energy Research, State University of New York at Stony Brook, is designed to train mid-career and senior government officials in developing countries in the techniques of energy policy analysis and planning, and covers, in addition to the material presented here, more detailed case studies in resource evaluation, pricing, conservation, financial analysis, and investment planning. Since its incep tion in 1978, some 220 individuals from 57 countries have attended the course. These notes have also been used in executive level seminars and in country training programs in the Sudan, the Dominican Republic, and the People's Republic of China. Attendance at the course is diverse, and typically includes planners, managers, engineers, and economists from energy planning agencies, ministries of finance and economic development, electric utilities, refineries and State Oil Companies, and specialized energy planning units for energy conservation and for regional cooperation. The monograph is designed not just as reading material to support lectures, but also as a general self-contained reference text for a very diverse audience: we have therefore included much introduc tory material. The presentation is focused on a discussion of the basic principles of systems analysis: and the case material has been specially designed to illustrate these principles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life-cycle assessment of new energy solutions plays an important role in discussions about global warming mitigation options and the evaluation of concrete energy production and conversion installations. This book starts by describing the methodology of life-cycle analysis and life-cycle assessment of new energy solutions. It then goes on to cover, in detail, a range of applications to individual energy installations, national supply systems, and to the global energy system in a climate impact context. Coverage is not limited to issues related to commercial uses by consultants according to ISO norms. It also emphasizes life-cycle studies as an open-ended scientific discipline embracing economic issues of cost, employment, equity, foreign trade balances, ecological sustainability, and a range of geo-political and social issues. A wealth of applications are described and a discussion on the results obtained in each study is included. Example areas are fossil and nuclear power plants, renewable energy systems, and systems based on hydrogen or batteries as energy carriers. The analysis is continued to the end-users of energy, where energy use in transportation, industry and home are scrutinized for their life-cycle impacts. Biofuel production and the combustion of firewood in home fireplaces and stoves are amongst the issues discussed. A central theme of the book is global warming. The impacts of greenhouse gas emissions are meticulously mapped at a depth far beyond that of the IPCC reports. A novel and surprising finding is that more lives will be saved than lost as a direct consequence of a warmer climate. After a 2oC increase in temperature, the reduction in death rates in areas with cold winters would outweigh the increase in the death rates in hot climates. However, this is only one of several impacts from greenhouse gases, and the remaining ones are still overwhelmingly negative. The fact that some population groups may benefit from higher temperatures (notably the ones most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions) whilst others (who did not contribute much to the problem) suffer is one of the main points of the book. The book is suitable as a university textbook and as a reference source for engineers, managers and public bodies responsible for planning and licensing.

More than fifty percent of the global population now lives in cities, which poses new challenges for sustainable development. This book integrates theory and methods of sustainability assessment with concepts from systems science to provide guidelines for assessing the sustainability of urban systems. It discusses different aspects of urban sustainability, from energy and housing, to mobility and health, covering social, economic and environmental factors, as well as the various stakeholders and actors involved. The book argues for the need to find models and solutions in order to design sustainable cities of the future in light of the complexity of urban social life. Including diverse case studies from the developed and developing world, this book provides a useful reference for researchers and students from a broad range of disciplines working in the field of sustainability, as well as for environmental consultants and policy makers.
