Book excerpt: The African Statistical Yearbook aims to break with past practices, whereby each regional/subregional organization published their own statistical data on African countries. It is expected that the joint collection and sharing of data between regional institutions will promote a wider use of country data, reduce costs and significantly improve the quality of the data, leading to better monitoring of development initiatives on the continent. The data in this issue of the Yearbook cover the period from 2001 to 2009, or up until the last year for which data are available. There are two parts to this volume: a set of summary tables followed by a set of country profiles.

Book excerpt: TERI Energy Data Directory Yearbook, or TEDDY, is an annual publication brought out by TERI since 1986. TEDDY is often used as a reference in other peer-reviewed books and journals for energy and environment-related data. It gives an annual overview of the developments in the energy supplying and consuming sectors as well as the environment sector. It also provides a review of the government policies that have implications for these sectors of the Indian economy. The book provides extensive data collated from the various government ministries, on the energy supply sectors including coal and lignite, oil and gas, power, and renewable energy sources and technologies; energy demand sectors, namely, agriculture, industry, transport and domestic sectors; along with information related to environment and climate change. Graphs and maps have been used extensively to explain facts, that makes the book an interesting read. Besides, detailed tables have been provided at the end of each chapter, making TEDDY a comprehensive data book. Each edition of TEDDY contains India’s commercial energy balances for the past four years that provide comprehensive information on energy flows within different sectors of the economy and how they have been changing over time. These energy balances and conversion factors are a valuable ready reckoner for anybody working on energy and related sectors. This is the 25th anniversary edition of the book and a number of refinements have been made in the content and presentation to reflect the changing needs of the readers. At the same time, care has been taken to ensure that continuity of information is preserved so that researchers can study the trends over time in the energy sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the midst of global economic development, the world is rapidly running out of resources. It is imperative that the level of carbon emissions be addressed by countries globally. This is especially so in China, where industrialization, city development and progressive agriculture have developed substantially. This comprehensive and integrated annual review volume sets the precedent in addressing this issue by being the pioneering volume on China's low-carbon development efforts, based on research efforts conducted by the Climate Policy Initiative at Tsinghua — an independent, experienced and professional research group. Several key questions on the results of China's 11th Five-Year plan are explored by reviewing China's performance against targets, while key policies and institutions that were designed and implemented are described. With a focus on the effectiveness of low-carbon development policies in China during the period of 2005–2008 and a look at detailed key indicators of low-carbon development such as energy consumption, CO2 emission and low-carbon technologies, the Annual Review of Low-carbon Development in China offers some insights and questions to consider as China works to meet the future through 2020. The authors then investigate the relationship between industrial growth and carbon emissions, using the example of the iron and steel industry to examine the motivation for energy intensive industries to reduce carbon emissions. They also consider energy efficiency and inter-company collaboration on carbon emission reduction. Lastly, the book describes the major low-carbon policies in China and their impact, economic cost and public acceptance.

Book excerpt: This book integrates the theory and practice of carbon trading at home and abroad, focusing on major theoretical and practical issues of establishing an emissions trading scheme (ETS) in China during its transition to a low-carbon economy. First, a theoretical analysis of the relationship between the transformation of the low-carbon economy and ETS is presented. Second, policy design, institutional evolution, market operation and practical effects of the major global ETSs are systematically compared. Third, the theoretical basis, key points, modelling methods, computational simulation, policy options and operational steps for key institutional and designing of policy elements in China's ETS are analyzed individually. Finally, policy recommendations for the top-level design of China's ETS are proposed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxides and acids of nitrogen play an important role in regulating atmospheric radical levels, in particular, that of the OH radical the main initiator of the degradation of chemicals in the atmosphere. A comprehensive overview on the methods used to measure nitrogen oxides and acids in the troposphere is given and difficulties and artefacts associated with the use of the techniques for measurements in urban and mega city environments is illustrated. State-of-the-art methods for the measurement of OH and HO2 radicals are reviewed and recently recognised difficulties, in particular with the measurement of HO2 radicals, are highlighted. Other contributions to the book cover our present understanding of the gas, aqueous and particulate/aerosol phase atmospheric degradation chemistry of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) under NOx conditions typical of rural, urban and mega city environments. Examples of measurements of NOx and VOCs in the atmospheres of these environments are given, in particular for the megacities Cairo and Beijing, in conjunction with modelling studies which attempt to simulate the field observations using state-of-the art knowledge on the chemistry of the VOCs and radical levels.

Book excerpt: This book studies the pathways and policies of regional coordinated low carbon development from the perspective of regional spillover-feedback effects. How do regional economies interact with carbon emission? This phenomena, also known as spillover-feedback effects, is explained in depth with reference to datasets and real examples. As China adopts zero-carbon emissions policies within the context of regional disparities, this theoretical construct is gaining utility, and in this book, climate science researchers and political scientists will find it explicated as never before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various transport sustainability issues from the perspective of developing countries, exploring key issues, problems and potential solutions for improving transport sustainability in China. It first reviews the current transport sustainability baselines in the three key dimensions of environmental, economic and social sustainability, via an international comparison encompassing both developed and developing countries in different world regions. Then, with a time frame up to 2030, the study groups 100 major Chinese cities according to their baseline conditions, projected population and economic growth, and common sustainability challenges in passenger transport. A systematic attempt is made to discuss the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of various emerging sustainable transport strategies, including the metro systems, bus rapid transit, light rail, bicycles (and e-bicycles), electric vehicles and walking. Based on the different city clusters identified, the study then explores the opportunities and constraints of introducing a range of emerging sustainable transport strategies through both statistical analysis and detailed fieldwork. Future directions and challenges are identified based on official documents, onsite observations and interviews with local people. The study concludes with thoughts on sustainable transport in smart cities, the importance of governance, local participation, internal and external city movements, and towards a holistic sustainable transport plan. Unsustainable Transport and Transition in China will be of great interest to scholars interested in carbon emissions, climate change, environmental policy, planning, road safety, sustainability, transportation and urban studies, and is relevant to China and other developing countries.
