A simple estimation of the local elastic strain energy release rate in the presence of plasticity (IL) is made, and used as a criterion for stable delamination crack growth in notched composite laminates. A three-dimensional elastoplastic, generally orthotropic finite-element method is used for the analysis. The finite-element techniques developed for estimating IL (in Mode I, Mode II, Mode III, and mixed-mode fracture) and for crack growth simulation are described. The analysis has been used to predict the initiation and growth of delamination near through-the-thickness cracks in central and single-edge notched [±45/0]s graphite/epoxy laminates subjected to static in-plane tensile stresses normal to the notches. Delamination between +45/-45 and -45/0 interfaces and material yielding at different stages of loading are presented. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed elastoplastic fracture criterion is very effective in predicting stable delamination crack growth in composite laminates having nonlinear matrix-dominated properties.

Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. The energy method is derived from the general concepts of classical fracture mechanics. When used judiciously and with proper interpretation of the physical factors pertinent to the crack growth process at the lamina(ply) level, the method describes well delamination growth behavior in laminates that are subjected to monotonically (static) or cyclically(fatigue) applied loads or to both. Both could be in tension or in compression.

Necessary modifications for the use of the method with geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis and corrections required for elements at the crack tip with different lengths and widths are discussed. The problems associated with cracks or delaminations propagating between different materials are mentioned briefly, as well as a strategy to minimize these problems. Due to an increased interest in using a fracture mechanics based approach to assess the damage tolerance of composite structures in the design phase and during certification, the engineering problems selected as examples and given as references focus on the application of the technique to components made of composite materials.

The configuration used in the study was a laminate with an across-the-width delamination. An approximate superposition stress analysis was developed to quantify the effects of various geometric, material, and load parameters on Mode I and Mode II strain-energy release rates GI and GII, respectively. Calculated values of GI and GII were then compared with measured cyclic delamination growth rates to determine the relative importance of GI and GII. High growth rates were observed only when GI was large. However, slow growth was observed even when GI was negligibly small. This growth apparently was due to a large value of GII.

In order to conduct a quick assessment of delamination growth, a closed form expression is developed to quantify the strain energy release rate of the laminate subjected to temperature environment. A finite element model is also developed to use for validating the analytical expression.
