A simple estimation of the local elastic strain energy release rate in the presence of plasticity (IL) is made, and used as a criterion for stable delamination crack growth in notched composite laminates. A three-dimensional elastoplastic, generally orthotropic finite-element method is used for the analysis. The finite-element techniques developed for estimating IL (in Mode I, Mode II, Mode III, and mixed-mode fracture) and for crack growth simulation are described. The analysis has been used to predict the initiation and growth of delamination near through-the-thickness cracks in central and single-edge notched [±45/0]s graphite/epoxy laminates subjected to static in-plane tensile stresses normal to the notches. Delamination between +45/-45 and -45/0 interfaces and material yielding at different stages of loading are presented. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed elastoplastic fracture criterion is very effective in predicting stable delamination crack growth in composite laminates having nonlinear matrix-dominated properties.

Static tension and tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on two different layups. Damage onset, accumulation, and residual properties were measured. Matrix cracking was shown to have a considerable influence on residual stiffness of glass epoxy laminates, and could be predicted reasonably well for cracks in 90 deg plies using a simple shear lag analysis. A fracture mechanics analysis for the strain energy release rate associated with 90 deg ply matrix crack formation was developed and was shown to correlate the onset of 90 deg ply cracks in different laminates. The linear degradation of laminate modulus with delamination area, previously observed for graphite epoxy laminates, was predicted for glass epoxy laminates using a simple rule of mixtures analysis. The strain energy release rate associated with edge delamination formation under static and cyclic loading was difficult to analyze because of the presence of several contemporary damage phenomena. The configuration used in the study was a laminate with an across-the-width delamination. An approximate superposition stress analysis was developed to quantify the effects of various geometric, material, and load parameters on Mode I and Mode II strain-energy release rates GI and GII, respectively. Calculated values of GI and GII were then compared with measured cyclic delamination growth rates to determine the relative importance of GI and GII. High growth rates were observed only when GI was large. However, slow growth was observed even when GI was negligibly small. This growth apparently was due to a large value of GII.
