Book excerpt: A series of digestion and metabolism experiments with pigs and poultry were conducted to evaluate the variation in available energy values in 18 samples of commercial normal corn (NC) and to compare the energy utilization of NC hybrids and three samples of high-oil corn (HOC) hybrids. Our studies at the University of Missouri estimated the variation of available energy values of NC hybrids to be approximately 5% for swine DE and ME values, 8% for adult rooster TMEn values, and 9% for young broiler chicken AME values. In NC hybrids, there were no correlation relationships between crude protein (CP) and crude fat (ether extract), or CP and lysine, or CP and methionine contents. The available energy values for HOC hybrids were greater than NC hybrids in both swine and poultry. Since HOC hybrids contained more fat and protein than NC hybrids, it is reasonable that available energy values would be greater than NC hybrids. Also the average amino acids digestibility of HOC hybrids were greater (5%) than those of NC hybrids in young broiler chickens. Within NC hybrids, there were no correlation and regression relationships between swine and poultry energy values. Proximate analysis results can not be used to predict the in vivo energy values in NC hybrids. Poultry energy values (TMEn and AME) were not an adequate animal model for the prediction of the swine energy values between normal corn hybrids.

In the first set of experiments, corn or sorghum-based diets were supplemented with increasing levels of synthetic amino acids up to the 5[superscript]th limiting amino acid. For nursery pigs, there were no main or interactive effects (P>0.05) of grain source or added amino acids which suggests that balancing up to the fifth limiting amino acid is possible in both sorghum- and corn-based diets with the use of crystalline amino acids without detrimental effects on nursery pig growth performance. For finishing pigs, balancing to the 5[superscript]th limiting AA using NRC (2012) suggested amino acid ratios in corn- or sorghum-based diets resulted in decreased ADG and G:F and pigs fed corn-based diets had greater G:F and IV than those fed sorghum. The second set of studies compared two new zinc sources to a diet containing pharmacological levels of ZnO on nursery pig growth performance. These studies demonstrated that increasing Zn up to 3,000 ppm Zn increased ADG and ADFI. Lower levels of the new zinc sources did not elicit similar growth performance as the high level of ZnO. Book excerpt: The present study was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary energy source (starch vs fat) and of increased levels of dietary energy and essential amino acids (EAA), related to the assumed increased EAA and energy requirements in immune stimulated pigs, on the growth performance of growing-finishing (GF) pigs under low sanitary conditions (LSC), in which the immune system of the pigs was activated, or under high sanitary conditions (HSC) resulting in a lower state of activation of the immune system. The trial was conducted with 408 male pigs (Tempo boar x (York x Dutch Landrace) sow) during the weaner, grower and finisher phase. Piglets were weaned at an age of four weeks and followed till delivery to the slaughterhouse. In a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, pigs were allocated to either high sanitary conditions (HSC) or low sanitary conditions (LSC). A contrast in sanitary conditions was generated by imposing to the pigs differences in strategy for vaccination against pathogens, cleaning and hygiene protocol, antibiotic treatment and deworming. During the growing and finishing period, pigs had ad libitum access to one of four experimental diets, a diet with starch as main energy source or a diet with fat and starch as main energy source, each diet having either basal energy and EAA concentrations (B diet) or increased concentrations in energy and EAA (I diet). The levels of supplementation of EAA and energy in the I diets compared to the B diets were based on a model that calculated the effects of low sanitary conditions on the EAA and energy requirements of pigs. At an age of nine weeks, pigs were moved to the rooms for GF pigs. The HSC GF pigs were fed a starter diet during the first five weeks, followed by a grower diet for four weeks and then a finisher diet till delivery to the slaughterhouse. The LSC GF pigs were fed a starter diet during six weeks, followed by a grower diet for four weeks and then a finisher diet till delivery to the slaughterhouse. In all pens, 8 or 9 GF pigs were housed.

The first study evaluated the combined effect of dietary level of DDGS and HP-DDG on the growth performance of wean-finish pigs and carcass and pork quality characteristics. This study demonstrated that DDGS can be included at up to 30% in diets (without HP-DDG) without compromising growth performance of wean-to-finish pigs. However, growth performance was increasingly compromised at higher inclusion levels of both co-products and belly firmness was negatively affected by increasing levels of both DDGS and HP-DDG. A second experiment was designed to define the minimum CP level and whether non-essential amino acids become limiting in low crude protein diets for late finishing pigs. The results of this study demonstrated that late finishing pigs can be fed diets with 9.76% crude protein level supplemented with 0.32 % L-Lys HCL and other essential amino acids without affecting growth rate and that non-essential amino acids were not limiting in the low crude protein diets evaluated. A third study was designed to recreate the negative effects on growth performance of feeding diets with 30% HP-DDG inclusion level and to test if the negative effect of feeding high HP-DDG levels on growth performance can be reproduced by adding excess branched chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine) to standard corn-soybean meal based diet. The results show that the reduction in the growth rates of growing pigs fed diets with 30% HP-DDG inclusion levels may be due to the dietary excesses of leucine present in diets with HP-DDG at 30% inclusion levels. The same effect was not present in finishing pigs. In general, growth performance and belly quality are compromised at higher inclusion levels of both HP-DDG and DDGS. The results of the last studies indicate that leucine level may play an important role on the reduction of the growth performance of pigs fed 30% HP-DDG inclusion levels.

Experiments 2 and 3 used a total of 3,888 pigs to determine the effects of manganese source and level on growing-finishing pigs growth performance and carcass characteristics. Experiment 4 used a total of 1,944 pigs to determine the effects of increasing added xylanase in nutrient adequate diets on growing-finishing pigs growth performance and carcass characteristics. Experiment 1 determined that increasing Val or Ile in high Lys-HCl-DDGS-based diets improved growth performance and final BW compared with pigs fed diets containing high levels of Lys-HCl without added Val and Ile. The addition of Trp alone could not overcome the negative effects of growth performance of pigs fed high Leu diets. These results demonstrate that negative effects of high Leu concentrations in corn-DDGS-based diets can be reversed by increasing the ratios of Val and Ile to Lys. In Exp. 2 and 3, growth performance was improved when 8 and 32 mg/kg of Mn is supplemented compared to 16 mg/kg and when pharmacological levels of Cu are supplemented; pigs fed Mn hydroxychloride had improved growth performance. Also, as Mn concentration in the diet increased, regardless of source, total Mn concentration in the liver increased but increased less for pigs fed Mn hydroxychloride. In Exp. 4, when xylanase was added to nutrient adequate diets, there was improved carcass yield when intermediate levels were fed, however, there was no impact on growth performance or mortality.

Book excerpt: Fiber-rich (HF) diets are typically supplemented with enzymes to improve their nutritive value and to offset their negative effects on pig growth. However, studies on enzyme effect in pigs have yielded inconsistent results on nutrient digestibility and growth. Although the inconsistencies observed could be explained by differences in substrate and experimental conditions and enzyme characteristics among studies, how enzymes influence metabolic and physiological responses in pigs is still not clear. Therefore, three experiments were conducted, using 3 dietary treatments (control, HF and HF diet supplemented with enzymes), to elucidate the effects of supplementing an HF diet with enzymes in growing pigs. Experiment one investigated HF and enzyme supplementation on energy and nutrient digestibility, digesta volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations, and gut microbial profile in pigs. Compared with the HF diet, enzymes improved dry matter, starch, energy and some amino acid (AA), but not nitrogen digestibility. Further, the enzymes stimulated the growth of gut bacterial groups, which have xylanolytic and cellulolytic properties in the HF-fed pigs, but enzymes did not influence digesta VFA concentration or fiber fermentation. Experiment 2 evaluated the effects of enzyme supplementation on growth performance, glucose uptake in jejunum tissue samples mounted in Ussing chambers, and intestinal nutrient transporter mRNA levels in pigs. Diet had no effect on feed intake and jejunal glucose uptake. The enzymes influenced nutrient transporter mRNA levels but did not improve pig growth rate and feed efficiency relative to the HF diet. The third experiment investigated the effect of supplementing the HF diet with enzymes on postprandial portal vein-drained viscera (PDV) nutrient fluxes and energy expenditure (measured as O2 consumption) by the PDV and whole-animal in pigs. Diet had no effect on energy expenditure. The HF diet reduced portal glucose, VFA and essential AA absorption and insulin production. Enzyme supplementation improved portal glucose and VFA absorption, but not essential AA absorption and insulin production. Overall, improvements in nutrient utilization due to enzyme supplementation did not improve the growth rate of pigs, which appears to be due to the lack of enzyme effect on essential AA and energy use by the PDV and insulin production.
