Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges of mankind today is that the world population and the world's energy consumption are increasing continuously. The majority of our power production derives from the combustion of fossil fuels, including coal, with additional significant contributions from hydroelectric and nuclear energy conversion. All of these energy conversion methods create different types of pollution. Fossil fuels are a finite resource of solar energy stored in floral and faunal fossils over many millions of years. The ever increasing demand for this finite and dwindling resource has the potential to significantly increase the cost of these resources. Additionally, an undesirable consequence of the thermo-chemical conversion of fossil fuels by combustion is environmental contamination. The reaction products from combustion can be harmful to the environment and us humans on a local scale, and may contribute to global climatic changes. Fossil fuel resources are unevenly distributed over the globe, leading to geopolitical unrest as a result of the competition for resource access. Clearly, the energy demands of our society need to be satisfied in a more appropriate, sustainable, and efficient way. Beyond the production and clean conversion of energy with low emissions, the storage and transmission of energy have to be solved sustainably. Nanowires made from carbon fibres have been proposed as modern transmission lines with the potential to significantly reduce the losses inside the distribution networks. Other smart materials developments can result in cleaner energy conversion for our society. This work builds on the pioneer work performed by Nobel Prize winner Richard Smalley, taking his vision of clean energy transmission through carbon structures into the second decade of the 21st century.

With limiting amount of fossil fuels and increasing demand of energy, we are facing the grand challenge of energy sustainability. Energy saving strategies may help to extend the usage of hydrocarbon fossil fuel, but can not solve the problem completely. Renewable energy seems to be the only solution. All the renewable energy sources, solar energy, wind energy, biomass rely on effective energy conversion materials and systems to benefit human beings. Various energy conversion materials and systems including photovoltaic (PV) solar cells and wind turbines have been developed for generating electricity from renewable energy sources such as sunlight and wind. High energy conversion efficiencies are critical for large scale applications of these systems. To understand the fundamentals of energy conversion mechanisms is the very first step. Materials have taken indispensable roles in energy conversions. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce the latest research progress on energy conversion materials to readers at various levels. The content of the book deals with various materials and processing techniques for energy conversions. A comprehensive state-of-the-art review on nanomaterials, related processing technologies and applications will be provided. Considerable effort has been made to elaborate the technological aspect of energy conversion materials, processing and manufacturing these materials.

Book excerpt: Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts Comprehensive and a fundamental approach to the study of sustainable fuel conversion for the generation of electricity and for coproducing synthetic fuels and chemicals Both electricity and chemicals are critical to maintain our modern way of life; however, environmental impacts have to be factored in to sustain this type of lifestyle. Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts provides a unified, comprehensive, and a fundamental approach to the study of sustainable fuel conversion in order to generate electricity and optionally coproduce synthetic fuels and chemicals. The book starts with an introduction to energy systems and describes the various forms of energy sources: natural gas, petroleum, coal, biomass, and other renewables and nuclear. Their distribution is discussed in order to emphasize the uneven availability and finiteness of some of these resources. Each topic in the book is covered in sufficient detail from a theoretical and practical applications standpoint essential for engineers involved in the development of the modern power plant. Sustainable Energy Conversion for Electricity and Coproducts features the following: Discusses the impact of energy sources on the environment along with an introduction to the supply chain and life cycle analyses in order to emphasize the holistic approach required for sustainability. Not only are the emissions of criteria pollutants addressed but also the major greenhouse gas CO2 which is essential for the overall sustainability. Deals with underlying principles and their application to engineering including thermodynamics, fluid flow, and heat and mass transfer which form the foundation for the more technology specific chapters that follow. Details specific subjects within energy plants such as prime movers, systems engineering, Rankine cycle and the Brayton–Rankine combined cycle, and emerging technologies such as high-temperature membranes and fuel cells. Sustainable energy conversion is an extremely active field of research at this time. By covering the multidisciplinary fundamentals in sufficient depth, this book is largely self-contained suitable for the different engineering disciplines, as well as chemists working in this field of sustainable energy conversion.
