Book excerpt: The workshop was opened by Mr. J. Kaminsky giving a brief synopsis of the history of the case studies to date. The Site and Neighborhood Design case studies are roughly midway through the process of identifying and evaluating various options for increasing energy conservation in current design stages of their development and marketing schedule. The experiences gained to date are given for Burke Center (a village center site, concentrating on building options) in Fairfax Co., Virginia; Radisson (basically a new town) in central New York; Greenbrier (3,000 acres, very flat and wet in a standard metropolitan area) in Virginia near Norfolk; Shenandoah (a series of villages, developed in stages) in Georgia near Atlanta; and The Woodlands (12 million ft2 of building area and 37,000 parking spaces) in Texas near Houston. Technical progress for each development is then summed. Dr. W.R. Powell presented a paper describing an energy conservation system called Community Annual Storage Systems (CASES). CASES collects heat in in summer and stores it for used heating in winter. In the winter, it preserves the chill and provides the necessary cooling in the summer for communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume brings together case studies that address the urgent need to manage energy use and improve thermal comfort in modern buildings while preserving their historic significance and character. This collection of ten case studies addresses the issues surrounding the improvement of energy consumption and thermal comfort in modern buildings built between 1928 and 1969 and offers valuable lessons for other structures facing similar issues. These buildings, international in scope and diverse in type, style, and size, range from the Shulman House, a small residence in Los Angeles, to the TD Bank Tower, a skyscraper complex in Toronto, and from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a cultural venue in Lisbon, to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, now an office building. Showing ingenuity and sensitivity, the case studies consider improvements to such systems as heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, and controls. They provide examples that demonstrate best practices in conservation and show ways to reduce carbon footprints, minimize impacts to historic materials and features, and introduce renewable energy sources, in compliance with energy codes and green-building rating systems. The Conserving Modern Heritage series, launched in 2019, is written by architects, engineers, conservators, scholars, and allied professionals. The books in this series provide well-vetted case studies that address the challenges of conserving twentieth-century heritage.

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Findings and recommendations are presented of a review of five case studies of ways to conserve energy through development planning and site design in communities. Two approaches were used. In the first approach, a conventional, pre-existing plan was analyzed to determine potential energy use. Once energy-conservation options were identified and evaluated, the conventional plan was modified by employing those options. This approach was used in The Woodlands, Burke Center, and Radisson studies. In the second approach, energy-conservation options are independently identified and evaluated. Those options that passed specific criteria screening were then utilized in developing one or more totally new plans based on energy objectives. This approach was used in Greenbrier and Shenandoah. Radisson is a new town on the outskirts of Syracuse, New York. Greenbrier is a 3000 acre planned community adjacent to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Shenandoah is a proposed new town in the Atlanta urbanized area. The Woodlands is a new community under development north of Houston. Burke Center is a residential planned unit development in Fairfax County, Virgnia. (MCW).

Book excerpt: This introductory meeting of the Site and Neighborhood Design (SAND) program identified and addressed areas of mutual concern to the contractor teams and the sponsoring organization, the Community Systems Branch, Division of Buildings and Community Systems. Of particular importance was realizing various conservation options for the five case studies. Distinguishing features of presentations on Burke Center (suburban Fairfax County, Virginia); Greenbriar (Tidewater, Virginia); Shenandoah (Corveta County, Georgia); Radisson, New York; and the Woodlands, (Houston, Texas) are summarized. At a panel discussion, the following subjects were discussed: energy system alternatives at the community scale; architectural and engineering systems; consumer products; passive site options. Developer activities are reviewed. It is concluded that the case studies are not purely research, but to mobilize developers, utilities, and local government to work together to realize more energy efficient site and neighborhood scale developments. Book excerpt: This book presents 18 in-depth case studies of net zero energy buildings—low-energy building that generate as much energy as they consume over the course of a year—for a range of project types, sizes, and U.S. climate zones. Each case study describes the owner’s goals, the design and construction process, design strategies, measurement and verification activities and results, and project costs. With a year or more of post-occupancy performance data and other project information, as well as lessons learned by project owners and developers, architects, engineers, energy modelers, constructors, and operators, each case study answers the questions: What were the challenges to achieving net zero energy performance, and how were these challenges overcome? How would stakeholders address these issues on future projects? Are the occupants satisfied with the building? Do they find it comfortable? Is it easy to operate? How can other projects benefit from the lessons learned on each project? What would the owners, designers, and constructors do differently knowing what they know now? A final chapter aggregates processes to engage in and pitfalls to avoid when approaching the challenges peculiar to designing, constructing, and owning a net zero energy building. By providing a wealth of comparable information, this book which will flatten the learning curve for designing, constructing, and owning this emerging building type and improve the effectiveness of architectural design and construction.

The new community includes a 95-acre residential site and a 51-acre town center. Energy-conserving plans developed for both sites have focused on passive measures to reduce energy use for space heating. Utility systems options have been identified for both sites. The case study overview contains data on location, climatology, local meteorology. Development plans for both the residential and town center areas are described. After a description of the team structure, methodological considerations, and impediments to implementation, the implementation program is given. (MCW).
