Book Synopsis Municipal Entrepreneurship and Energy Policy by : Alison E. Woodward
Download or read book Municipal Entrepreneurship and Energy Policy written by Alison E. Woodward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994. The energy crisis of the 1970s provided an opportune climate for public sector entrepreneurship to develop. The authors present case studies from six innovative and diverse municipalities in Denmark, France, Germany, Sweden and the United States. The studies document problems these communities encountered while implementing new ideas in energy conservation and changes in energy supply and municipal planning. Each community was selected on the basis of its early, vigorous response to the energy crisis, and then followed up to examine roadblocks along the way to innovation in the public sector. The case studies highlight the challenges policy entrepreneurs face and the tactics they employ, revealing crucial differences between public and private sector entrepreneurship.

Book Synopsis Transforming Markets by : Andrew Kilpatrick
Download or read book Transforming Markets written by Andrew Kilpatrick and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of the history of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) takes up the story of how the Bank has become an indispensable part of the international financial architecture. It tracks the rollercoaster ride during this period, including the Bank’s crucial coordinating role in response to global and regional crises, the calls for its presence as an investor in Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa and later Greece and Cyprus, as well as the consequences of conflicts within its original region. It shows how in face of the growing threat of global warming the EBRD, working mainly with the private sector, developed a sustainable energy business model to tackle climate change.Transforming Markets also examines how the EBRD broadened its investment criteria, arguing that transition towards sustainable economies requires market qualities that are not only competitive and integrated but which are also resilient, well-governed, green and more inclusive. This approach aligned with the 2015 Paris Agreement and the international community’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with its core set of 17 sustainable development goals. The story of the EBRD’s own transition and rich history provides a route map for building the sustainable markets necessary for future growth and prosperity.

Book Synopsis Energy efficiency in Swedish SMEs by : Fredrik Backman
Download or read book Energy efficiency in Swedish SMEs written by Fredrik Backman and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2018-05-14 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall aim of this thesis is to analyze how municipalities support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in their work to improve their energy efficiency. The purpose of this study is to increase the current understanding of how the methods and tools used by municipalities to assist SMEs in improving their energy efficiency influence the end results in terms of achieved energy efficiency, and how knowledge related to energy efficiency is created within SMEs. This thesis consists of two separate case studies that examine how two municipalities used a network approach to support SMEs in implementing energy efficient measures. The theoretical frameworks of policy networks, barriers, communities of practice (COPs), and energy efficiency networks were used in this thesis. The findings are presented in the appended four articles. An overall conclusion is that networks that provide information in the form of a report with technological solutions as the only output are less likely to reach the agreed-upon goals. To achieve a more successful result, SMEs must be active in the process; they must be allowed to create knowledge and understanding that they perceive as valuable and relevant for themselves. Another important result is that information is not automatically transformed by SMEs into knowledge. In fact, SMEs need a platform from which they can negotiate the received information and use it to create knowledge through practice and social interaction. Finally, it was found that the type of technological solution is not insignificant; the type of energy efficient measure to be implemented and its level of complexity affect how a municipality should support energy efficiency work among SMEs.

Book Synopsis Ensuring a Sustainable Future by : Environmental Protection Atgency (Us)
Download or read book Ensuring a Sustainable Future written by Environmental Protection Atgency (Us) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing wastewater and drinking water service to citizens requires energy—and a lot of it. The twin problems of steadily rising energy costs and climate change have therefore made the issue of energy management one of the most salient issues facing wastewater and water utilities today. Energy management is also at the heart of efforts across the entire sector to ensure that utility operations are sustainable in the future. More and more utilities are realizing that a systematic approach for managing the full range of energy challenges they face is the best way to ensure that these issues are addressed on an ongoing basis in order to reduce climate impacts, save money, and remain sustainable. Working closely with a number of utilities and others, the Office of Water at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proactively addressing this issue by developing this Energy Management Guidebook for Wastewater and Water Utilities that provides a systematic approach to reducing energy consumption and energy cost. This Guidebook was specifically written to provide water and wastewater utility managers with a step-by-step method, based on a Plan-Do-Check-Act management system approach, to identify, implement, measure, and improve energy efficiency and renewable opportunities at their utilities.
