Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume brings together case studies that address the urgent need to manage energy use and improve thermal comfort in modern buildings while preserving their historic significance and character. This collection of ten case studies addresses the issues surrounding the improvement of energy consumption and thermal comfort in modern buildings built between 1928 and 1969 and offers valuable lessons for other structures facing similar issues. These buildings, international in scope and diverse in type, style, and size, range from the Shulman House, a small residence in Los Angeles, to the TD Bank Tower, a skyscraper complex in Toronto, and from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, a cultural venue in Lisbon, to the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, now an office building. Showing ingenuity and sensitivity, the case studies consider improvements to such systems as heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, and controls. They provide examples that demonstrate best practices in conservation and show ways to reduce carbon footprints, minimize impacts to historic materials and features, and introduce renewable energy sources, in compliance with energy codes and green-building rating systems. The Conserving Modern Heritage series, launched in 2019, is written by architects, engineers, conservators, scholars, and allied professionals. The books in this series provide well-vetted case studies that address the challenges of conserving twentieth-century heritage.

Book excerpt: A special 90-minute educational session of the Association of School Business Officials' annual meeting presented a series of mini-workshops, each featuring a school district or organization that had developed and/or implemented a successful program to reduce energy usage in schools. The 19 presenters at these mini-workshops included school administrators as well as representatives from energy-related federal, provincial, and state governmental entities who were knowledgeable about energy conservation programs for schools. Schoolhouse Energy Efficiency Demonstration (SEED), a project supported by Tenneco, Inc., as a public service, conducted 20 demonstration energy audits in the United States. Descriptions of the overall SEED project and of the energy programs of two of the school districts that participated in SEED comprise the middle section of the booklet. The 19 presentations in the booklet are based on brief written summaries, distributed at the session, of each organization's exemplary energy conservation program and on supporting materials submitted for participation in the program. In addition to sharing energy conservation ideas and proven techniques, the presentations provide a resource listing of the names, addresses, and phone numbers of individuals and organizations willing to share greater details about their programs with other educators. Book excerpt: An energy management workbook for colleges is presented by a task force composed of representatives of the American Council on Education, the National Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Association of Physical Plant Administrators of Colleges and Universities. In addition to worksheets and exercises, information is included on energy assessment, management practices, and financing mechanisms. The workbook is organized into three basic sections: diagnosis, program development, and implementation. Worksheets for the college president, vice president, and physical plant director are provided to help identify: (1) current energy-related activities; (2) the campus decision-makers on energy; and (3) facilities, maintenance, and energy conditions. Charts that illustrate by year the campus square footage, annual campus energy costs, and the number of employees in the plant department are presented. Key points that should be considered during a tour of the campus central plant and other facilities are identified. Exercises are included on: collecting energy use data, evaluating past and projecting future energy use, analyzing energy costs, and assessing facilities' energy condition. Information is also included on: energy efficiency financing, developing an energy management consensus, scheduling energy management activities, financial evaluation of investments, and the planning and implementation of the energy management program. Definitions of energy audits and analysis and a glossary of technical and financial terms are included. (SW)

'Energy: Management, Supply and Conservation' is a comprehensive text dealing with the theory and practice of the supply of energy, energy management and auditing, and the design of sustainable energy facilities. It considers the systems needed to create low-energy, sustainable buildings, including passive solar design, energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning, and combined heat and power. In addition the book includes substantial sections on renewable energy, transport energy, and energy economics. This new edition includes the latest in alternate-energy technology, for example wind turbines and solar panels as well as updating important energy values and statistics. The book’s readable style, along with its many figures, tables and worked examples make it an ideal text for courses on energy management, environmental engineering, architectural engineering and building services engineering. It will also be useful as a definitive handbook for professionals in the environmental, construction, utilities and facilities management sectors, as well as being of interest to those involved in sustainability economics and environmental policy making. Clive Beggs is Professor of Medical Technology at the University of Bradford. He is both a mechanical engineer and a biomedical scientist, who for many years has had an interest in ways in which energy is utilized and consumed. He is an expert in the fields of energy management and low energy building design, with many years experience of the design and installation of mechanical services within the construction industry. He is a well known international speaker and is author of many scientific papers on low energy and environmentally friendly building design. He is a holder of the CIBSE Carter Bronze Medal for his work on desiccant cooling.
