Book excerpt: Optical Properties and Band Structure of Semiconductors, Volume 1 presents the experimental studies of the fundamental energy band structure of semiconductors and insulators. This book provides detailed information of the available measurement methods and results for a large number of both cubic and non-cubic materials. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the fundamental band structure of semiconductors. This text then discusses the instrumentation and methods available for the measurement of absorption coefficient, absolute reflection coefficient, and other optical properties of insulators and semiconductors primarily in their fundamental region. Other chapters consider the interband transitions in the one-electron approximation. The final chapter deals with the equivalence of the transverse and longitudinal dielectric constants in the frequency range under consideration. This book is a valuable resource for solid state physicists. Readers and researchers with interest in the electron and optical properties of semiconductors and insulators will also find this book useful.
Book Synopsis Electronic Structure of Organic Semiconductors by : Luís Alcácer
Download or read book Electronic Structure of Organic Semiconductors written by Luís Alcácer and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the perspective of an experimental chemist, this book puts together some fundamentals from chemistry, solid state physics and quantum chemistry, to help with understanding and predicting the electronic and optical properties of organic semiconductors, both polymers and small molecules. The text is intended to assist graduate students and researchers in the field of organic electronics to use theory to design more efficient materials for organic electronic devices such as organic solar cells, light emitting diodes and field effect transistors. After addressing some basic topics in solid state physics, a comprehensive introduction to molecular orbitals and band theory leads to a description of computational methods based on Hartree-Fock and density functional theory (DFT), for predicting geometry conformations, frontier levels and energy band structures. Topological defects and transport and optical properties are then addressed, and one of the most commonly used transparent conducting polymers, PEDOT:PSS, is described in some detail as a case study.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Band Structure Engineering in Semiconductor Microstructures held at Il Ciocco, Castelvecchio Pascali in Tuscany between 10th and 15th April 1988. Research on semiconductor microstructures has expanded rapidly in recent years as a result of developments in the semiconductor growth and device fabrication technologies. The emergence of new semiconductor structures has facilitated a number of approaches to producing systems with certain features in their electronic structure which can lead to useful or interesting properties. The interest in band structure engineering has stimd ated a variety of physical investigations and nove 1 device concepts and the field now exhibits a fascinating interplay betwepn pure physics and device technology. Devices based on microstruc tures are useful vehicles for fundamental studies but also new device ideas require a thorough understanding of the basic physics. Around forty researchers gathered at I1 Ciocco in the Spring of 1988 to discuss band structure engineering in semiconductor microstructures.
Book Synopsis Properties of Aluminium Gallium Arsenide by : Sadao Adachi
Download or read book Properties of Aluminium Gallium Arsenide written by Sadao Adachi and published by IET. This book was released on 1993 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alloy system A1GaAs/GaAs is potentially of great importance for many high-speed electronics and optoelectronic devices, because the lattice parameter difference GaAs and A1GaAs is very small, which promises an insignificant concentration of undesirable interface states. Thanks to this prominent feature, a number of interesting properties and phenomena, such as high-mobility low-dimensional carrier gases, resonant tunnelling and fractional quantum Hall effect, have been found in the A1GaAs/GaAs heterostructure system. New devices, such as modulation-doped FETs, heterojunction bipolar transistors, resonant tunnelling transistors, quantum-well lasers, and other photonic and quantum-effect devices, have also been developed recently using this material system. These areas are recognized as not being the most interesting and active fields in semiconductor physics and device engineering.
Book Synopsis Basic Properties of Semiconductors by : P.T. Landsberg
Download or read book Basic Properties of Semiconductors written by P.T. Landsberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 1219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Volume 1 was published in 1982, the centres of interest in the basic physics of semiconductors have shifted. Volume 1 was called Band Theory and Transport Properties in the first edition, but the subject has broadened to such an extent that Basic Properties is now a more suitable title. Seven chapters have been rewritten by the original authors. However, twelve chapters are essentially new, with the bulk of this work being devoted to important current topics which give this volume an almost encyclopaedic form. The first three chapters discuss various aspects of modern band theory and the next two analyze impurities in semiconductors. Then follow chapters on semiconductor statistics and on surfaces, interfaces and band offsets as they occur in heterojunctions. Chapters 8 to 19 report on newer topics (though a survey of transport properties of carriers is also included). Among these are transport of hot electrons, and thermoelectric effects including here and elsewhere properties of low-dimensional and mesoscopic structures. The electron-hole liquid, the quantum Hall effect, localisation, ballistic transport, coherence in superlattices, current ideas on tunnelling and on quantum confinement and scattering processes are also covered.
Book Synopsis Semiconductor Device Fundamentals by : Robert F. Pierret
Download or read book Semiconductor Device Fundamentals written by Robert F. Pierret and published by Pearson Educacion. This book was released on 1996 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although roughly a half-century old, the field of study associated with semiconductor devices continues to be dynamic and exciting. New and improved devices are being developed at an almost frantic pace. While the number of devices in complex integrated circuits increases and the size of chips decreases, semiconductor properties are now being engineered to fit design specifications. Semiconductor Device Fundamentals serves as an excellent introduction to this fascinating field. Based in part on the Modular Series on Solid State Devices, this textbook explains the basic terminology, models, properties, and concepts associated with semiconductors and semiconductor devices. The book provides detailed insight into the internal workings of building block device structures and systematically develops the analytical tools needed to solve practical device problems.
Book Synopsis Electronic Properties of Materials by : Rolf E. Hummel
Download or read book Electronic Properties of Materials written by Rolf E. Hummel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book on electrical, optical, magnetic and thermal properties of materials is in many aspects different from other introductory texts in solid state physics. First of all, this book is written for engineers, particularly materials and electrical engineers who want to gain a fundamental under standing of semiconductor devices, magnetic materials, lasers, alloys, etc. Second, it stresses concepts rather than mathematical formalism, which should make the presentation relatively easy to understand. Thus, this book provides a thorough preparation for advanced texts, monographs, or special ized journal articles. Third, this book is not an encyclopedia. The selection oftopics is restricted to material which is considered to be essential and which can be covered in a 15-week semester course. For those professors who want to teach a two-semester course, supplemental topics can be found which deepen the understanding. (These sections are marked by an asterisk [*]. ) Fourth, the present text leaves the teaching of crystallography, X-ray diffrac tion, diffusion, lattice defects, etc. , to those courses which specialize in these subjects. As a rule, engineering students learn this material at the beginning of their upper division curriculum. The reader is, however, reminded of some of these topics whenever the need arises. Fifth, this book is distinctly divided into five self-contained parts which may be read independently.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We began planning and writing this book in the late 1970s at the suggestion of Manuel Cardona and Helmut Lotsch. We also received considerable en couragement and stimulation from colleagues. Some said there was a need for instructional material in this area while others emphasized the utility of a research text. We tried to strike a compromise. The figures, tables, and references are included to enable researchers to obtain quickly essential information in this area of semiconductor research. For instructors and stu dents, we attempt to cover some basic ideas about electronic structure and semiconductor physics with applications to real, rather than model, solids. We wish to thank our colleagues and collaborators whose research re sults and ideas are presented here. Special thanks are due to Jim Phillips who influenced us both during our formative years and afterwards. We are grateful to Sari Yamagishi for her patience and skill with the typing and production of the manuscript. Finally, we acknowledge the great patience of Helmut Lotsch and Manuel Cardona. Book Synopsis Handbook of the Band Structure of Elemental Solids by : Dimitris A. Papaconstantopoulos
Download or read book Handbook of the Band Structure of Elemental Solids written by Dimitris A. Papaconstantopoulos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents electronic structure data and tabulations of Slater-Koster parameters for the whole periodic table. This second edition presents data sets for all elements up to Z = 112, Copernicium, whereas the first edition contained only 53 elements. In this new edition, results are given for the equation of state of the elements together with the parameters of a Birch fit, so that the reader can regenerate the results and derive additional information, such as Pressure-Volume relations and variation of Bulk Modulus with Pressure. For each element, in addition to the equation of state, the energy bands, densities of states and a set of tight-binding parameters is provided. For a majority of elements, the tight-binding parameters are presented for both a two- and three-center approximation. For the hcp structure, new three-center tight-binding results are given. Other new material in this edition include: energy bands and densities of states of all rare-earth metals, a discussion of the McMillan-Gaspari-Gyorffy theories and a tabulation of the electron-ion interaction matrix elements. The evaluation of the Stoner criterion for ferromagnetism is examined and results are tabulated. This edition also contains two new appendices discussing the effects of spin-orbit interaction and a modified version of Harrison's tight-binding theory for metals which puts the theory on a quantitative basis.
