Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Power Sector Reform by : David G. Victor
Download or read book The Political Economy of Power Sector Reform written by David G. Victor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifteen years the world's largest developing countries have initiated market reform in their electric power sectors from generation to distribution. This book evaluates the experiences of five of those countries - Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa - as they have shifted from state-dominated systems to schemes allowing for a larger private sector role. As well as having the largest power systems in their regions and among the most rapidly rising consumption of electricity in the world, these countries are the locus of massive financial investment and the effects of their power systems are increasingly felt in world fuel markets. This accessible volume explains the origins of these reform efforts and offers a theory as to why - despite diverse backgrounds - reform efforts in all five countries have stalled in similar ways. The authors also offer practical advice to improve reform policies.

Book excerpt: Although cities constitute the key contributors to unsustainable development, especially due to their ecological and equity impacts, they are also viewed as the vehicle for the transition to a sustainable future for humanity both in terms of technologies as well as policies and lifestyle changes. This book introduces the theoretical principles which underpin the required transition to sustainable cities in general and Cape Town in particular. The subsequent fourteen chapters tackle more specific areas of interventions and the key constraints towards realisation of related transition interventions in the city of Cape Town.

Book Synopsis Peri-urban Water and Sanitation Services by : Mathew Kurian
Download or read book Peri-urban Water and Sanitation Services written by Mathew Kurian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-17 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 2.6 billion people in the developing world lack access to safe water and sanitation service. The Millennium Development Goal’s (MDG) target is to halve the number of people without access to a sustainable source of water supply and connection to a sewer network by 2015. That target is unlikely to be met. If there is anything that can be learnt from European experience it is that institutional reform occurs incrementally when politically enfranchised urban populations perceive a threat to their material well-being due to contamination of water sources.

Book Synopsis Energy, Power and Protest on the Urban Grid by : Andres Luque-Ayala
Download or read book Energy, Power and Protest on the Urban Grid written by Andres Luque-Ayala and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a global overview of experiments around the transformation of cities' electricity networks and the social struggles associated with this change, this book explores the centrality of electricity infrastructures in the urban configuration of social control, segregation, integration, resource access and poverty alleviation. Through multiple accounts from a range of global cities, this edited collection establishes an agenda that recognises the uneven, and often historical, geographies of urban electricity networks, prompting attempts to re-wire the infrastructure configurations of cities and predicating protest and resistance from residents and social movements alike. Through a robust theoretical engagement with established work around the politics of urban infrastructures, the book frames the transformation of electricity systems in the context of power and resistance across urban life, drawing links between environmental and social forms of sustainability. Such an agenda can provide both insight and inspiration in seeking to build fairer and more sustainable urban futures that bring electricity infrastructures to the fore of academic and policy attention.
