Book excerpt: The effects of deformation parameters on the tendency of 2024 aluminum alloy to recrystallize either during hot working or during subsequent solution heat treatment were examined. Samples were upset under controlled conditions in the Gleeble programmed thermal-mechanical test machine. The behavior of homogenized 2024 was compared with that of a high purity Al-4.6Cu alloy and with cast 2024 and 2124. Based on the Gleeble results, hot rolling procedures were designed for producing a fine equiaxed grain structure in sheet rolled from either homogenized 2024 or cast 2124. A limited quantity of sheet was rolled according to these procedures and evaluated to determine tensile and fatigue properties. (Author).

The objective of Task A is to optimize the properties of aluminum alloys by controlling the concentrations and sizes of the small, intermediate, and large precipitates. Systematic variations in chemistry and also in the homogenization and aging treatments have provided a range of concentrations and sizes of the various precipitates in a series of alloys based on the 7075 and 2024 alloy compositions. Procedures for fracture toughness measurements of thin sheet material have been developed. Fatigue tests have also been conducted. The objective of Task B is to develop a recrystallized microstructure in wrought high-strength aluminum alloys during hot working. The desired microstructure is being sought by control of hot-working conditions and also control of alloy composition. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The effects of the various small, intermediate, and large precipitates on the fracture toughness and fatigue properties of aluminum alloys based on the 2024 and 7075 compositions were studied. Different concentrations and sizes of the precipitates were obtained by systematic variations in the chemical composition and also in the homogenization and aging treatments. The roles of the various precipitates in deformation and fracture were determined by slip-line and fractographic studies, and these results were carefully correlated with the fracture toughness data. The dispersion hardening effect of the intermediate precipitates appeared to have only a minor effect on the fracture toughness of both alloys, but the intermediate precipitates did exert a major indirect effect on the fracture toughness of the 7000-series specimens because of their effect on recrystallization and grain size. As expected, the large precipitates formed during ingot solidification were detrimental to both alloys. The fatigue properties of the 2000-series alloys appeared to be relatively insensitive to the range of metallurgical variables investigated, but significant improvements were obtained in the 7000-series specimens.

Amorphous powders of the Al85Ni10La5 alloy were produced using a gas atomization technique. These powders can be used for synthesizing ultra-high strength bulk nanostructured Al alloy via crystallization from the amorphous phase. In addition, Al85Ni10La5 ribbon was also fabricated using a melt spinning technique.
