Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Endocrinology explains the subject of endocrinology and endocrine disease in a clear and logical fashion and presents it to the medical student in the context of clinical medicine. In this way, the entire scope of the subject is treated and an explanation of endocrine disease is coherently built upon sound scientific principles. This book bridges the gap between basic science and the clinical practice of endocrinology. Written by a clinician and a teacher of preclinical science it covers the cellular mechanisms of hormone action and an account of each of the main glands. While aiming to be comprehensive, it does not impose upon students information which is superfluous to their needs. Understanding basic concepts will allow them to build on their foundations and frequent references to clinical problems should remind them of the link between science and practice which is particularly exemplified in endocrinology. The book also informs about laboratory methodology and imaging as applied to endocrinology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, Essential Endocrinology: A Primer for Nonspecialists, is written with dual purposes in mind: first, to provide a framework of basic endocrinology and diabetology to the medical student, and second, to provide a quick, con cise, and handy "guide" to the junior residents in their early years of training who wish to obtain a working knowledge about endocrine disorders that affect their patients. One of the outstanding advantages of being a teacher of en docrinology to students and junior residents is that it bestows a perspective from a unique vantage point. Books written for the junior members of our profession have suffered from extremes of caliber, ranging from excellence beyond their comprehension to insufferable mediocrity. Textbooks in en docrinology that are simple enough to cover the principles of that speciality and yet comprehensive enough without treading into controversial quicksand are few and far between. This book is aimed at filling that gap and is written with no other criterion than simplifying a complex subject matter. From this touchstone, the work has never really departed. A decade of experience as a teacher and physician in the field of endo crinologyhas impressed on me that the process of "simplification" rests on four basic principles: an understanding of endocrine concepts, the application of these concepts to the understanding of diseases, the transference of knowl edge to clinical situations, and the integration of the patient with the labo ratory, the ultimate testing ground where clinical diagnoses stand or fall.

Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Naturopathic Endocrinology is designed to be a textbook for professors and students of naturopathic medicine, a desk reference for clinicians treating patients with endocrine disorders, and a convenient resource for all healthcare professionals wanting to read more about naturopathic endocrinology research. The purpose of the book is to apply Naturopathic methods of understanding, diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease to a wide range of endocrine-related disorders. This book is divided into three sections: a student textbook of naturopathic endocrinology based on current research, a clinical handbook of naturopathic protocols to diagnose and treat the most common endocrine disorders; and a selection of key clinical studies and research reports written by leading medical doctors and scientists. Case studies from clinical practice illustrate the principles outlined in the text. This book enables students of naturopathic medicine to enter their clinical training with increased confidence in understanding and treating disorders of the endocrine system. The student can draw upon the substantial knowledge and clinical experience accumulated in these pages, as well as quickly call up the many scientific references provided from recent literature in medical journals, naturopathic and botanical medicine publications, and endocrinology textbooks. This book offers practicing physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals a very practical clinical companion, covering established diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for endocrine disorders in quick reference charts. This book does not aim to replace standard endocrinology textbooks but rather to complement them. It is very much a cooperative effort between naturopathic and medical doctors. The work of prominent medical doctors, such as Abram Hoffer, John Lee, Denis Wilson, and Alan R. Gaby, is published alongside the work or respected naturopathic doctors such as Gregory S. Kelly. Dr Michael Friedman is a graduate of The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and a former Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Bridgeport. He lives in Montpelier, Vermont.

Book excerpt: This book concisely presents the essential information in the field of gyneco logic endocrinology. Textual material is extensively supplemented by schemes, tables, and diagrams to elucidate etiologies, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and natural histories of the various clinical disorders in the field. The most timely and up-to-date laboratory procedures and physiologic manipulations for diagnosis are presented. Management rationales based on the definitive diagnostic studies and on knowledge of the natural histories are also presented. Special emphasis is placed on the roles of suprahypothalamic as well as extragonadal and peripheral factors in the pathogenesis of many of the disorders of the menstrual cycle. These include the influence of diseases, altered physiologic states, and drugs-areas which are largely neglected in other presentations of this field. The material presented is based on courses in gynecologic endocrinology presented at the Lorna Linda University School of Medicine and at other institutions over the past several years. Extensive use is made of authoritative reviews in this field, and only highly controversial material is authenticated by specific references. I am deeply grateful to Mrs. Lucille Innes of the Audiovisual Department at Lorna Linda University for the artwork. The loyal secretarial help of Alice Hickman, Carol Guzman, and Robbie Cleek is gratefully acknowledged. Habeeb Bacchus, Ph.D., M.D., F.A.C.P.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of living organisms, of the ways in which food is used to serve all the many needs of the body. Biochemistry is closely connected with nutrition, the study of the types and amounts of various materials required in the diet. Biochemistry is also inextricably int~rtwined with endo crinology, the study of hormones, for most of the hormones exert their actions by altering the behaviour of chemical reactions within the body. The central problem in biochemistry is that of the supply of energy. Energy is needed for a multitude of purposes of which muscular activity is the best known. Energy is required for digestion, and for the functioning of the kidney, the liver, the brain and all the other organs in the body. Energy is also essential for the building up of the complex organic molecules of which the body is con structed. Ultimately, most of the energy utilized on earth comes from the sun. Plants are able to tap this energy source directly by the process of photosynthesis. By using pigments, notably the green chlorophyll, plants can trap the energy of sunlight and use it to build up complex substances such as fat, carbohydrate, protein and nucleic acids. The only raw materials required are carbon dioxide, water and simple inorganic substances such as nitrates which can be extracted from the soil.
