Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhopal Gas Leak, also known as the Bhopal Tragedy, occurred on the night of December 2-3, 1984, at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, India. The leaked gas was methyl isocyanate (MIC), used in the production of pesticides at the UCIL plant. The release of this gas resulted in a toxic gas cloud spreading around the Bhopal area. The tragedy claimed the lives of thousands of people in the days following the gas leak. The exact number of casualties is still debated, but estimates range from 15,000 to 25,000 people. Many others suffered serious injuries and long-term effects from gas exposure. The gas leak occurred due to an uncontrolled chemical reaction inside the MIC storage tank. The exact cause of the leak is still disputed, but factors mentioned include poor maintenance, safety violations, and security system failures. In addition to human casualties, the Bhopal gas leak also had significant environmental impacts. The spreading gas cloud contaminated the soil and air around the plant, causing extensive ecological damage and affecting the health of the local community for a long time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion of the field of genetics over the last decade, with the new technologies that have stimulated research, suggests that a new sort of reference work is needed to keep pace with such a fast-moving and interdisciplinary field. Brenner's Encyclopedia of Genetics, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set, builds on the foundation of the first edition by addressing many of the key subfields of genetics that were just in their infancy when the first edition was published. The currency and accessibility of this foundational content will be unrivalled, making this work useful for scientists and non-scientists alike. Featuring relatively short entries on genetics topics written by experts in that topic, Brenner's Encyclopedia of Genetics, Second Edition, Seven Volume Set provides an effective way to quickly learn about any aspect of genetics, from Abortive Transduction to Zygotes. Adding to its utility, the work provides short entries that briefly define key terms, and a guide to additional reading and relevant websites for further study. Many of the entries include figures to explain difficult concepts. Key terms in related areas such as biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology are also included, and there are entries that describe historical figures in genetics, providing insights into their careers and discoveries. This 7-volume set represents a 25% expansion from the first edition, with over 1600 articles encompassing this burgeoning field Thoroughly up-to-date, with many new topics and subfields covered that were in their infancy or not inexistence at the time of the first edition. Timely coverage of emergent areas such as epigenetics, personalized genomic medicine, pharmacogenetics, and genetic enhancement technologies Interdisciplinary and global in its outlook, as befits the field of genetics Brief articles, written by experts in the field, which not only discuss, define, and explain key elements of the field, but also provide definition of key terms, suggestions for further reading, and biographical sketches of the key people in the history of genetics

This book was released on 2007-08-08 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of inorganic and organic chemicals and their metabolites enter the biosphere daily as a direct result of human activities. Many of these chemicals have serious consequences on sensitive species of natural resources, crops, livestock, and public health. The most hazardous of these were identified by a panel of environmental specialists from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; these chemicals are the focus of this encyclopedia. For each priority group of chemicals, information is presented on sources, uses, physical and chemical properties, tissue concentrations in field collections and their significance, lethal and sublethal effects under controlled conditions. This includes effects on survival, growth, reproduction, metabolism, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and mutagenicity - and proposed regulatory criteria for the protection of sensitive natural resources, crops, livestock, and human health. Taxonomic groups of natural resources covered include terrestrial and aquatic plants and invertebrates, fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. * The only product that centers on the most hazardous environmental chemicals to sensitive natural resources * The only single volume compendium on the subject, allowing ease in consulting * Written by a noted national and international authority on chemical risk assessment to living organisms
