Book Synopsis A History of Physical Theories of Comets, From Aristotle to Whipple by : Tofigh Heidarzadeh
Download or read book A History of Physical Theories of Comets, From Aristotle to Whipple written by Tofigh Heidarzadeh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the development of ideas about the motion and trajectory of comets has been investigated piecemeal, we lack a comprehensive and detailed survey of ph- ical theories of comets. The available works either illustrate relatively short periods in the history of physical cometology or portray a landscape view without adequate details. The present study is an attempt to review – with more details – the major physical theories of comets in the past two millennia, from Aristotle to Whipple. My research, however, did not begin with antiquity. The basic question from which this project originated was a simple inquiry about the cosmic identity of comets at the dawn of the astronomical revolution: how did natural philosophers and astronomers define the nature and place of a new category of celestial objects – comets – after Brahe’s estimation of cometary distances? It was from this turning point in the history of cometary theories that I expanded my studies in both the pre-modern and modern eras. A study starting merely from Brahe and ending with Newton, without covering classical and medieval thought about comets, would be incomplete and leave the fascinating achievements of post-Newtonian cometology unexplored.

Book Synopsis Land and Water Education and the Allodial Principle by : Zane Ma Rhea
Download or read book Land and Water Education and the Allodial Principle written by Zane Ma Rhea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the ancient allodial principle enables a paradigmatic shift in the way specialist educators in environmental, Indigenous, and legal studies; teacher educators; and teachers think about land and water education. Land and water are basic to human life, and students will need to grapple with matters of sustainability and Indigenous entitlement in their future work. People now living in lands and on waterways that have been colonized, such as Australia, are taught to regard land and water in ways that have been fundamentally shaped by English law. This book introduces ancient as well as more contemporary forms of land and water access and examines the underlying ontological and epistemological enframements that shape the way that ‘land’ and ‘water’ are understood and taught. As peoples of the world grapple with environmental sustainability and Indigenous rights, the author provides a pivotal rejection of the entitlement to ‘abuse’. The book also reasons that educators should employ alod pedagogy to develop their approach to ‘working out’ difficult matters to do with balancing the rights and responsibilities of nations, regions, corporations, communal and individual owners in the access to, use of, and transferability of land and waterways.

Book Synopsis American States of Nature by : Mark Somos
Download or read book American States of Nature written by Mark Somos and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American States of Nature transforms our understanding of the American Revolution and the early makings of the Constitution. The journey to an independent United States generated important arguments about the existing condition of Americans, in which rival interpretations of the term "state of nature" played a crucial role. "State of nature" typically implied a pre-political condition and was often invoked in support of individual rights to property and self-defense and the right to exit or to form a political state. It could connote either a paradise, a baseline condition of virtue and health, or a hell on earth. This mutable phrase was well-known in Europe and its empires. In the British colonies, "state of nature" appeared thousands of times in juridical, theological, medical, political, economic, and other texts from 1630 to 1810. But by the 1760s, a distinctively American state-of-nature discourse started to emerge. It combined existing meanings and sidelined others in moments of intense contestation, such as the Stamp Act crisis of 1765-66 and the First Continental Congress of 1774. In laws, resolutions, petitions, sermons, broadsides, pamphlets, letters, and diaries, the American states of nature came to justify independence at least as much as colonial formulations of liberty, property, and individual rights did. In this groundbreaking book, Mark Somos focuses on the formative decade and a half just before the American Revolution. Somos' investigation begins with a 1761 speech by James Otis that John Adams described as "a dissertation on the state of nature," and celebrated as the real start of the Revolution. Drawing on an enormous range of both public and personal writings, many rarely or never before discussed, the book follows the development of America's state-of-nature discourse to 1775. The founding generation transformed this flexible concept into a powerful theme that shapes their legacy to this day. No constitutional history of the Revolution can be written without it.
