Book excerpt: “In the heart of this world, the Lord of life, who loves us so much, is always present. He does not abandon us, he does not leave us alone, for he has united himself definitively to our earth, and his love constantly impels us to find new ways forward. Praise be to him!” – Pope Francis, Laudato Si’ In his second encyclical, Laudato Si’: On the Care of Our Common Home, Pope Francis draws all Christians into a dialogue with every person on the planet about our common home. We as human beings are united by the concern for our planet, and every living thing that dwells on it, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. Pope Francis’ letter joins the body of the Church’s social and moral teaching, draws on the best scientific research, providing the foundation for “the ethical and spiritual itinerary that follows.” Laudato Si’ outlines: The current state of our “common home” The Gospel message as seen through creation The human causes of the ecological crisis Ecology and the common good Pope Francis’ call to action for each of us Our Sunday Visitor has included discussion questions, making it perfect for individual or group study, leading all Catholics and Christians into a deeper understanding of the importance of this teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the impact of disintegrity on various aspects of governance, as the disregard of ecological conditions produce grave direct effects to human rights (to water or food) and, indirectly, also to human security in several ways. International legal regimes need to be reconsidered and perhaps re-interpreted, in order to correct these situations that affect the commons today. Some believe that our starting point should acknowledge the impact we already have on the natural world, and accept that we now live in the "anthropocene". Others think that the present emphasis on sustainable development needs to be re-defined. Finally, many believe that reconnecting with moral principles both in professional life and in governance in general represents a necessary first step.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We all have weaknesses that affect our body, mind, and spirit. But it is our will to overcome them that decides how we live. With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible (Mt 19:26)" - Father Peter Mary Rookey, O.S.M. The healing priest, Father Peter Mary Rookey, O.S.M, received Christs Gift of Healing in 1948. Since then, thousands of healings have been reported worldwide. Witness letters, some with medical consensus, have been submitted to the International Compassion Ministry. When asked about the healings, Father Rookey simply says, "I just do what He told us to do and the people are delivered and healed. We are answering the last command of Jesus, . . . They shall lay their hands upon the sick, and they shall recover (Mk 16:18). For the first time, in his own words, Father Rookey explains his lifes journey that has been guided by his constant "Yes" to God. With gentle humor and keen intelligence, Father Rookey provides practical direction of how deepening trust in Gods Laws and Love leads to the healing of serious hurts and the overcoming of lifes most difficult challenges. In the process, Father Rookey says, "Our souls begin to recognize that we belong to Him and He is Love. Ultimately, filled with His Love, we can give the gift of ourselves to Christ and His Love will come forth through us." Nihil Obstat, Rev. Anthony J. Brankin, S.T.L., Imprimatur, Rev. George J. Rassas, Archdiocese of Chicago, November, 2005; " . . .it is all I can do to put it down. There is so much to this book. . . The testimonies of numerous healings are wonderful to read. The insights into Fathers life are also wonderful to read. But perhaps the most important parts of this book deal with his answers to the insightful questions which the author asks. For example, in asking Father about spiritual enslavement, he talked of conversion and turning away from serving Satan toward serving God. Father says, "Thats what we are about in the healing ministry. Although some sickness, for example, is allowed by God to purify us and sanctify us because there is no prayer, no sanctifier, like suffering. Jesus Himself proved that, by suffering terribly and even dying in agony to open the Gates of Heaven for us. There is nothing compared with suffering to sanctify and to be a power for good in the world. . . . This is just a very small example of the wisdom contained in this book from Father Rookeys heart and mind. Often times, I had to reread what he said, it is so beautiful and touching . . . The numerous pictures throughout the book are amazing.. . . . This is the first book I have ever read preparing to do a review that I do not feel qualified to review . . . I have known Father Rookey for many years yet had no idea how brilliant a man he is. I knew he was a holy man but had no idea the depth of his holiness. I knew he healed many people but had no idea how many. . . This book is a treasure." Mary Sue Eck, Editor, Medjugorje Magazine; "I am 3/4 of the way done . . .I am speechless. My prayer life has changed because of this book. I often find myself going through the motions at Mass praying as though I should. This book has helped me reflect on our religion/Mass and the sacraments (especially reconciliation). (The) book about Father Rookey has had a deep impact on me." Jamie; "I think it is the best book so far because of the vast amount of spiritual advice and information. It should be read daily and the various chapters over and over again to absorb them because of the depth and intelligence of the advice." Richard

Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.

As Pope John Paul II, he continued to surprise, directly confronting Communist regimes, flying hundreds of thousands of miles to meet the faithful, and building bridges with other faiths. John Paul II became a bête noire in the eyes of liberals for his staunch refusal to accept contraception or the ordination of women. But for others he was a Churchillian figure who took on the forces of godlessness and moral relativism. He gained a stature that left secular statesmen in his shadow. Love him or loathe him, few could deny that he was a man of rare courage. He survived two assassination attempts, fought off cancer and waged a very public battle with Parkinson’s disease. Seven years after his death he continues to exert a hold over the Church and to inspire an almost cult-like devotion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is Love. To believe in this God of unconditional Love is a lived experience in each person and in each generation everywhere on the globe and all different cultures and historical periods. In the beginning of the nineteenth century we notice in the south of the Netherlands a strong movement to renew and to actualise the Catholic faith in the concrete circumstances of poverty and political neglect. In this way the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity Daughters of Mary and Joseph was founded on 7 July 1820 in ’s Hertogenbosch. Similar to several other congregations in the same period St Vincent de Paul was their principal source of inspiration, determined their charism and remained at the centre of their spirituality. Religious life is essentially a lived experience of faith in which concrete persons touched by the incomprehensible Love of God dedicate their life in total surrender to this Love. As a result, they obey to the divine calling to be wholly transformed in love and to become docile instruments of God’s overwhelming Charity towards all vulnerable persons - young and old – their brothers and sisters who are stripped of their human dignity, humiliated and enslaved in many subtle ways. In this Vincentian congregation this divine vocation of Charity was originally implemented as a specific service to the education of blind and deaf children but widened to the care of other forgotten groups like victims of trafficking in women and discrimination or subordination of women.

This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the largely Eurocentric nature of moral theology in the history of the Roman Catholic Church, what will it take to invest the theological community in the history and moral challenges of the Church in other parts of the world, especially Africa? What is to be gained for the whole Church when this happens in a deep and lasting way? In this timely and important study, Paulinus Ikechukwu Odozor brings greater theological clarity to the issue of the relationship between Christianity and African tradition in the area of ethical foundations. He also provides a constructive example of what fundamental moral theology done from an African and Christian (especially Catholic) moral theological point of view could look like. Following a brief history of the development of African Christian theology, Odozor examines responses of African theologians to African tradition and Christian responses to the reality of non-Christian religions. In a context where the African religious experience and heritage are powerful sources of meaning and identity, Christian evangelization raises questions both about the African primal religions and about Christianity itself and its claims. Odozor takes up the subject of moral reasoning in an African Christian theological ethics and concludes with case studies that show how the African Church has tried to inculturate moral discourse on a religiously pluralistic continent and relate the healing gospel message to African situations. Students and scholars of moral theology and ethics and church leaders will profit from the issues raised in Morality Truly Christian, Truly African.
