Download or read book Enchanted New York written by Kevin Dann and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fantastical field guide to the hidden history of New York's magical past Manhattan has a pervasive quality of glamour—a heightened sense of personality generated by a place whose cinematic, literary, and commercial celebrity lends an aura of the fantastic to even its most commonplace locales. Enchanted New York chronicles an alternate history of this magical isle. It offers a tour along Broadway, focusing on times and places that illuminate a forgotten and sometimes hidden history of New York through site-specific stories of wizards, illuminati, fortune tellers, magicians, and more. Progressing up New York’s central thoroughfare, this guidebook to magical Manhattan offers a history you won’t find in your Lonely Planet or Fodor’s guide, tracing the arc of American technological alchemies—from Samuel Morse and Robert Fulton to the Manhattan Project—to Mesmeric physicians, to wonder–working Madame Blavatsky, and seers Helena Roerich and Alice Bailey. Harry Houdini appears and disappears, as the world’s premier stage magician’s feats of prestidigitation fade away to reveal a much more mysterious—and meaningful—marquee of magic. Unlike old-world cities, New York has no ancient monuments to mark its magical adolescence. There is no local memory embedded in the landscape of celebrated witches, warlocks, gods, or goddesses—no myths of magical metamorphoses. As we follow Kevin Dann in geographical and chronological progression up Broadway from Battery Park to Inwood, each chapter provides a surprising picture of a city whose ever-changing fortunes have always been founded on magical activity.

But at the age of seventeen, his parents are murdered by humans. He had to leave his home and his best friend turned true love, Xanthanasia Etienne, and go into hiding lest the enemy kills him too. That very same day, he told Xanthanasia he loved her, but Ambros never heard her say it back. Years later he returned, but Ambros is different. He has asked for Xanthanasia’s hand in marriage, but she could see that he was not the same elf she knew. Could she blame him? Before his parents died, he was happy and friendly. After, he was angry and was filled with hate and contempt. Xanthanasia couldn’t stand him anymore and had fallen out of love with him. Could it be that the way he was now is because Xanthanasia never told him she loved him? Ambros and her father won’t even let her talk to anyone they deemed unworthy, and that included her friends. Once she met Zarek Melrena, she felt alive again. Her mother approved of her budding friendship with Zarek, but when her father objected to their growing friendship, Xanthanasia decided to leave with Zarek on an adventure to different lands. She learned lots of things from Zarek, and even made a few friends along the way. However, someone was following them, watching their every move. Who could it be? And why would they care what two inconsequential elves are doing? Will Ambros ever be the way he was before his parents died? Will Xanthanasia get the old Ambros that she fell in love with back, or will she find new love with Zarek?

Book Synopsis The Northern Enchantment by : Margaret Jonas
Download or read book The Northern Enchantment written by Margaret Jonas and published by Temple Lodge Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of "north" suggests much more than wintry cold, ice, and snow. To many, it hints at something magical, enchanting, and mysterious. This book explores the spiritual aspect of this attraction through a survey of ancient history, Norse mythology, and contemporary studies of Earth mysteries and sacred sites. Through her detailed research, Margaret Jonas traces the birth of Celtic Christianity in the British Isles, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Germany to reveal a time when ancient prophecies related to the Sun and divine beings came to fulfillment. A new spiritual wisdom gradually spread across Europe--not just northward from the south, but also eastward from west. The author describes how a paradisiacal element from the earliest stages of Earth's evolution was preserved and nurtured in hidden places associated with the northern mysteries. This fascinating work of accessible scholarship features chapters on Hyperborea, Thule, and Apollo; the Druids and Odinic Mysteries; Norway and the Celtic Christian Legacy; the Number Five and the Etheric Body; the Externsteine and the God Vidar, and Finland. The book concludes with hints of a future when northern magic will be transformed, and "new clairvoyant faculties will be within the reach of all humanity."

Book Synopsis Allegory and Enchantment by : Jason Crawford
Download or read book Allegory and Enchantment written by Jason Crawford and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is modernity? Where are modernitys points of origin? Where are its boundaries? And what lies beyond those boundaries? Allegory and Enchantment explores these broad questions by considering the work of English writers at the threshold of modernity, and by considering,in particular, the cultural forms these writers want to leave behind. From the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries, many English writers fashion themselves as engaged in breaking away from an array of old idols: magic, superstition, tradition, the sacramental, the medieval. Many of these writers persistently use metaphors of disenchantment, of awakening from a broken spell, to describe their self-consciously modern orientation toward a medieval past. And many of them associate that repudiated past with the dynamics and conventions of allegory. In the hands of the major English practitioners of allegorical narrativeWilliam Langland, John Skelton, Edmund Spenser, and John Bunyanallegory shows signs of strain and disintegration. The work of these writers seems to suggest a story of modern emergence in which medieval allegory, with its search for divine order in the material world, breaks down under the pressure of modern disenchantment. But these four early modern writers also make possible other understandings of modernity. Each of them turns to allegory as a central organizing principle for his most ambitious poetic projects. Each discovers in the ancient forms of allegory a vital, powerful instrument of disenchantment. Each of them, therefore, opens up surprising possibilities: that allegory and modernity are inescapably linked; that the story of modern emergence is much older than the early modern period; and that the things modernity has tried to repudiatethe old enchantmentsare not as alien, or as absent, as they seem.
