Book excerpt: This Routledge Classic Edition brings together widely experienced editors and contributors to show how access to a whole school curriculum can be provided for learners with moderate to profound and multiple learning difficulties. Along with a new appraisal of the contents from the editors, the contributors raise debates, illustrate effective teaching ideas and discuss strategies for providing a high-quality education for these pupils and a celebration of their achievements. The book also discusses the active involvement of family members and the learners themselves in these processes and considers issues surrounding empowerment of learners, professional development of the workforce and curriculum principles such as differentiation, personalisation, and engagement. Winner of the prestigious nasen/TES Academic Book Award in 1996, Enabling Access is an essential read for students and lecturers in higher education, and for teachers, support staff, and other professionals in all educational settings in the UK and abroad catering for these learners.

Book excerpt: "Self-determination theory (SDT) represents a comprehensive framework for the study of human motivation, personality development and wellness as evidenced by the breadth and variety of chapters in this handbook. In introducing this collection, we review the basic assumptions, philosophy of science, methods, and mission of SDT. We also provide a brief history of SDT, linking various developments within the theory to the contributions found in this volume. Finally, we attempt to place SDT within the landscape of past and contemporary theoretical psychology, as well as modern historical and cultural developments, in part explaining the continued growth of SDT's basic research and real-world applications"--

Book excerpt: There has been considerable interest internationally in how research can be effectively translated to have an impact on practice in schools. The application of evidence informed approaches in the field of education is contested and debated. Such debates are intensified in relation to the issue of how best to include children with diverse learning needs in the classroom. The role of knowledge, science and evidence in how we both conceptualize and best support children with special educational needs and other forms of diversity in the classroom, remains an open question in terms of booth policy and practice. Although there is a considerable and growing body of literature on evidence informed practice in education in general, there has been less attention paid to its implications for the domain of educational inclusion specifically. However, tensions between differing conceptualisations of difference and the role of categorisation present questions as yet not fully answered as to the ways in which evidence can and should articulate with practice in this specific domain. For example, issues of what is inclusion, the place of norms and values that define inclusion, how we conceptualize and think about difference, across culture, language and cognition, are raised when we think about the application of evidence to practice in the area of educational inclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is focused on the provision of community-based programs and activities in health and related long-term care services that have contributed, or may in the future contribute, to social policy development. Several of the articles in this collection deal with community-based health and long-term care program and policy initiatives that have been facilitated through federal programs such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Older Americans Act. The implementation of some of these community-based programs have significantly influenced social policy thinking regarding the beneficial effects of integrating medical and social aspects of health and long-term care services, as well as the health care team approach to the delivery of health and long-term care services. Another dimension addressed is the impact of interest groups, such as family caregivers, in advancing social policy that supports the efforts of community-based family care givers in providing services to patients in need. The underlying theme is how such local community programs have contributed in a variety of ways to the development of social policies at the community level that in many ways focus on the integration of health and related long-term care services and a health care team approach to the provision of such services. The book will be of interest to community development courses in Schools of Social Work and other health professions such as Nursing and Public Health. It will also be of interest to health policy programs in public administration and other social sciences. This book was published as a special issue of Social Work in Public Health.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, research on metaphor has focused almost exclusively on its verbal and cognitive dimensions. In Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising, Charles Forceville argues that metaphor can also occur in pictures and draws on relevant studies from various disciplines to propose a model for the identification, classification, and analysis of 'pictorial metaphors'. By using insights taken from a range of linguistic, artistic and cognitive perspectives for example, interaction and relevance theory, Forceville shows not only how metaphor can occur in pictures, but also provides a framework within which these pictorial metaphors can be analyzed. The theoretical insights are applied to thirty advertisements and billboards of British, French, German and Dutch origin. Apart from substantiating the claim that it makes sense to talk about `pictorial metaphors', the detailed analyses of the advertisements suggest how metaphor theory can be employed as a tool in media studies. Context in its various manifestations plays a key role in the analyses. Furthermore, the results of a small-scale experiment shed light on where general agreement about the meaning of a pictorial metaphor can shade over into other more idiosyncratic but equally valid interpretations. The final chapter sketches the ways in which the insights gained can be used for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few industries in which decisions are so intently scrutinized by millions of Canadians as the healthcare industry. Each day important decisions concerning the funding and delivery of healthcare are made far from the patient’s bed, in the offices of administrators and policy makers. These decisions can have considerable impact on the lives of patients and the practice of healthcare professionals. Whether you are a seasoned executive or an entry-level manager, Administration Ethics is intended to assist you in rendering effective and ethical decisions. Brimming with engaging examples, this text provides a practical guide to understanding the essential but often challenging areas of ethics theories, principles, codes, and rights, and insightfully illustrates how these concepts are integrated. Administration Ethics goes beyond academic debate and enters the daily practice of health administration. It examines the psychology of decision making, revealing how we sometimes make well-intentioned, but unethical decisions. Each chapter includes illustrative cases pertinent to the ethical management and policy decisions required of healthcare administrators. Featuring a new, user-friendly decision model and designed specifically with the Canadian healthcare system in mind, this volume will be an indispensable resource for both current and future healthcare administrators in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful democracies rely on an active citizenry. They require citizens to participate by voting, serving on juries, and running for office. But what happens when those citizens purposefully opt out of politics? Exit—the act of leaving—is often thought of as purely instinctual, a part of the human "fight or flight" response, or, alternatively, motivated by an antiparticipatory, self-centered impulse. However, in this eye-opening book, Jennet Kirkpatrick argues that the concept of exit deserves closer scrutiny. She names and examines several examples of political withdrawal, from Thoreau decamping to Walden to slaves fleeing to the North before the Civil War. In doing so, Kirkpatrick not only explores what happens when people make the decision to remove themselves but also expands our understanding of exit as a political act, illustrating how political systems change in the aftermath of actual or threatened departure. Moreover, she reframes the decision to refuse to play along—whether as a fugitive slave, a dissident who is exiled but whose influence remains, or a government in exile—as one that shapes political discourse, historically and today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether, with whom, and when to have children are among the most precious of our private decisions. Increasingly, however, the interest of others in these decisions raise difficult questions about the role of government and health professionals in influencing reproductive choice. Nowhere is this tension felt more keenly than in the context of HIV and AIDS. This book takes on the tough issues related to HIV and childbearing: Is there a moral right to have children? What are the limits of persuasion? Are there constitutional constraints on interference with reproduction? What are the precedents with restricting the childbearing behavior of women who use drugs? The book includes original work by doctors, lawyers, ethicists, and public health professionals. Also included are the experiences of HIV-infected women and their health care providers. Interviews were conducted over a two-year period with HIV-infected women and with health care providers from four cities to examine what issues of childbearing in the context of HIV mean to them. The book is divided into four sections on medical and public health issues, legal issues, ethical and social issues, and comments from the community. It concludes with recommendations for clinical practice and public policy. Public policy makers, health care providers, practitioners in bioethics, pediatrics, health law, and obstetrics/gynecology will find this book invaluable when dealing with issues related to HIV and childbearing.
