In this book an eminent ecologist explains the ecosystem concept, tracing its evolution, describing how numerous American and European researchers contributed to its evolution, and discussing the explosive growth of ecosystem studies. Golley surveys the development of the ecosystem concept in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and discusses the coining of the term ecosystem by the English ecologist Sir Arthur George Tansley in 1935. He then reviews how the American ecologist Raymond Lindeman applied the concept to a small lake in Minnesota and showed how the biota and the environment of the lake interacted through the exchange of energy. Golley describes how a seminal textbook on ecology written by Eugene P. Odum helped to popularize the ecosystem concept and how numerous other scientists investigated its principles and published their results. He relates how ecosystem studies dominated ecology in the 1960s and became a key element of the International Biological Program biome studies in the United States--a program aimed at "the betterment of mankind" specifically through conservation, human genetics, and improvements in the use of natural resources; how a study of watershed ecosystems in Hubbard Brook, New Hampshire, blazed new paths in ecosystem research by defining the limits of the system in a natural way; and how current research uses the ecosystem concept. Throughout Golley shows how the ecosystem concept has been shaped internationally by both developments in other disciplines and by personalities and politics.

Book excerpt: Forestry and agroforestry education and extension programmes for forest and farm communities have not kept up with needs in many places. However, the success of achieving international sustainability goals and implementing global commitments with respect to sustainable production, halting land degradation, ecosystem restoration and climate change mitigation is contingent on having capacity in place at local levels, or building it, across a large part of the world’s rural lands. This publication reviews the current and potential application of farmer field schools (FFS) to strengthen the capacities and skills of smallholders and family framers in sustainable forestry and agriculture production. From 2020 to 2021, FAO conducted a stocktaking study to identify opportunities, challenges and lessons learned in the application of the Farmer Field Schools (FFS) approach on forestry and agroforestry. Through the review of over 400 documents (peer-reviewed and grey literature), 36 in-depth key informant interviews and a stakeholder workshop, this stocktaking identified twenty-one majors FFS programmes in forestry and agroforestry, with over 200 000 graduates distributed across every region of the Global South. Three decades of FFS experience on forestry, particularly agroforestry, has taken place in multiple geographic, environmental, and social contexts – from arid and semi-arid savannahs to high rainfall mountain environments. This experience represents a diverse, well-tested, decentralized and, locally situated knowledge base on which to build future programmes aiming at strengthening farmers and forest dwellers’ capacity to create sustainable agricultural systems that include trees and perennial crops. This stocktaking argues that though enhanced understanding of agro-ecological dynamics and farmer-led experimentation, the FFS can enable farmers across the globe to sustain or improve productivity while reducing their dependence on externally based inputs. Forestry and agroforestry applications promise to enhance the environmental integrity and socio-economic impacts of FFS, mainly by increasing the presence of perennials in production systems, useful for stabilizing food security and strengthening on-farm ecosystem services.

Book excerpt: Governments in countries like India have launched ambitious efforts to conserve natural habitats and wildlife. While in many cases achieving considerable success, these efforts have also caused serious conflicts between wildlife officials and local communities who are traditionally dependent on these resources for their livelihood. These conflicts, along with increasing developmental and commercial pressure, are threatening the future of virtually all wildlife habitats, including protected areas. The suffering that local people have been subjected to has also been enormous. Over the first half of the 1990s, alternative paths to conservation have increasingly been discussed in India and other tropical countries. To a limited extent, such alternatives arc also being tried out on the ground. A part of their inspiration comes from widespread efforts by communities themselves to regenerate and protect their surrounding areas, but there are also examples of bold initiatives by government officials to meaningfully involve people in their work. As part of a 14-month project carried out by a team at the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, the above issues were explored through action research in three specific protected areas (Dolma Sanctuary, Rajaji National Park, Kailadevi Sanctuary) and through conceptual work on several issues related to people's involvement in conservation. A survey was also done on experiences of people's involvement in other countries, and lessons from these relevant for India. Possibilities for changing the relevant laws, including suggestions for an expanded system of protected area categories, were explored. The book contains results from all the above, a detailed bibliography on the subject, and related statements from dialogues initiated by the research team. The book will be of use to protected area managers, NGO activists, researchers, and others who are working on issues of conservation and livelihood rights.
