Download or read book Gringoismos written by Dave Adkins and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I took two years of Latin at Grinnell (Iowa) High School and two years of French at Cornell College, but I never really committed to using these languages. However, when I spent three years in Mozambique I had an opportunity to pursue the Portuguese language in an everyday situation. When I returned to the U.S., I studied the spoken and written form of the language with a Brazilian speaking partner and developed a useful fluency. I then decided to use the basics of Portuguese in the study of Spanish. I had a number of Spanish speaking partners, did some work assignments in Tehuacan, Mexico and earned an M.A. from the University of Leon. Using some creativity, I was able to read, write and converse in Spanish as often as I wished in my places of residence in Iowa and Texas. I have written this book of bilingual essays called “Gringoismos” which is a presentation of personal experiences in the Hispanic culture as well as some take-offs on Spanish writings.

Book excerpt: The book Us & Them: Women Writers’ Discourses on Foreignness analyses the contingent nature of the constructions of foreignness in Ireland and Galicia. On the basis of various comparable circumstances in both communities —migration flows, increasingly multicultural societies, constant renegotiations of national identity, and the growing visibility of women in the public sphere— this book traces the multiple ways in which gender is intertwined with foreignness. Focusing on literary works published since the 1980s the author presents contemporary women writers’ new insights into cultural difference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a broad stroke of honesty and lightness of mind, Laura Granada delivers one of her most honest and raw works yet. As with all of her work, what the reader finds in these pages involve pains of the past mixed with gratitude for lessons and hope for the present and future. She questions all the madness around us, reflecting on the illusory nature of the mundane as well as the grandiose paths we find ourselves on. Puppet masters abound. We walk through a performative society, where critical thinking is drowned by noise. Nevertheless, she reflects on lessons from the show, because the show continues...
Download or read book Sublime Blue written by Pablo Neruda and published by Wings Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neruda once suggested that his words be poured, like wine, "into the glasses of other languages." Here is just such a communion. Noted American poet William Pitt Root brings us poems from the first of Neruda's three collections of odes, Odas elementales (1954). In his introduction, Root praises Neruda's form, with its phrases that "fall like thin wrists of water cascading from great heights, exploding at intervals against ledges and obstacles protruding from a sheer cliff-face. Fluent, sinuous, riddled with delightful surprise, the offhand form is also suited to the tone of seemingly casual surmise that can so suddenly pool in a conclusion of great clarity and depth." Here are poems addressed to hope and gloom, to numbers and to the atom, to blue flowers and artichokes. This is Neruda at his finest. Book jacket.

Download or read book Amores de Tarde written by Issary Simmons Benavides and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
