Book Synopsis The Shade of the Saguaro / La sombra del saguaro. Essays on the Literary Cultures of the American Southwest / Ensayos sobre las culturas literarias del suroeste norteamericano by : Annamaria Pinazzi
Download or read book The Shade of the Saguaro / La sombra del saguaro. Essays on the Literary Cultures of the American Southwest / Ensayos sobre las culturas literarias del suroeste norteamericano written by Annamaria Pinazzi and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume springs from that fruitful project of scientific cooperation between the humanities departments of Università di Firenze and University of Arizona which was the Forum for the Study of the Literary Cultures of the Southwest (2000-2007). Tri-cultural, at least (Native, Hispanic and Anglo-American), and multi-lingual, today's Southwest presents a complex coexistence of different cultures, the equal of which would be hard to find elsewhere in the United States. Of this virtually inexhaustible object of study, the essays here collected tackle an ample range of themes. While the majority of them are concerned with the literatures of the Southwest, still a good third falls into the fields of history, art history, ethnography, sociology or cultural studies. They are partitioned in four sections, the first three reflecting the chronology of the stratification of the three major cultures and the fourth highlighting one of the most sensitive topics in and about contemporary Southwest - the borderlands/la frontera

Book Synopsis A Companion to Calderón de la Barca by : Roy Norton
Download or read book A Companion to Calderón de la Barca written by Roy Norton and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2021 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive study of Calderón in EnglishPedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) is one of the most important dramatists - many would say the single most important dramatist - of the Spanish Golden Age. Spain''s dominant and most prestigious playwright for much of the seventeenth century, his work is still regularly staged and translated, influential in more recent times on writers as diverse as Schiller, Shelley and Lorca. The author of around 120 plays (not counting his numerous Corpus Christi autos) in a variety of styles, Calderón is most famous for his stirring dramas, characterized by rhetorically powerful poetry, dramatic structures carefully calibrated to produce poignant echoes, and the fizzing intellectual energy they apply to the age''s ontological, eschatological and political preoccupations. His plays succeed in combining these perennial concerns with compelling plots subtle enough to defy definitive interpretation. As this volume seeks to show, however, Calderón''s comedies deserve equal recognition. Too long stereotyped as a dour, cerebral conservative, this playwright''s comic works are as amusing as they are clever. This Companion is the first comprehensive study of Calderón in English. It provides a rigorous but readable introduction to the man, his work and its legacy. Its chapters - written by leading international comedia specialists - provide an overview of his life, explain his intellectual, social, moral, and literary contexts, and examine his stagecraft, his corpus, and his reception both within and without the Hispanic world up to the twenty-first century. Specific chapters are devoted to La vida es sueño, his most famous work, which appears on many a university syllabus, and to his infamous wife-murder plays.ual recognition. Book Synopsis Dibs en busca del sí mismo by : Virginia M. Axline
Download or read book Dibs en busca del sí mismo written by Virginia M. Axline and published by Universitat de València. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Narratives of Resistance by : Ana María Manzanas Calvo
Download or read book Narratives of Resistance written by Ana María Manzanas Calvo and published by Univ de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 1999 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles included in this collection cover a wide range of literatures and topics, but most of them address the ways in which ethnic writers create themselves in opposition and resistance to the mainstream. These narratives of opposition and resistance do not equate protest narratives but represent a consciously subversive effort. There is agency and creativity in the confrontation, for the majority of the these narratives are not only demystifying an old world and order but creating a new one; there narratives are not reproducing as much as producing and forging culture and literature. The articles we presente resist not only the politics of traditional canon formation but the politics of cultural nationalism as well; they challenge the margins as well as the center. With this revisionist agenda, the aim or this collection is to invite readers to further their rethinking of American and Caribbean literatures.
Book Synopsis Life's a Dream by : Pedro Calderón de la Barca
Download or read book Life's a Dream written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and published by Hispanic Classics. This book was released on 2011 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is life? A frenzy. What is life? An illusion, a shadow, a fiction; and the greatest good is fleeting, for all life is a dream, and even dreams are but dreams." That is the haunting lesson learned by Prince Sigismund in Life's a Dream (La vida es sueno), the best known and most widely admired play of Catholic Europe's greatest dramatist, Pedro Calderon de la Barca. Calderon's long life (1600-1681) witnessed the pinnacle and collapse of Spanish political power as well as the great flowering of classical Spanish literature. He inherited his dramatic principles from his brilliant predecessor, Lope de Vega, perfecting his formula with more economical plots, greater subtlety of thought, and, in some cases, deeper character development and psychological insight. The English Romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, one of the first translators of Calderon into English, was of the opinion that he "exceeds all modern dramatists, with the exception of Shakespeare, whom he resembles, however, in the depth of thought and subtlety of imagination of his writings, and in the rare power of interweaving delicate and powerful comic traits with the most tragical situations." Nowhere is Calderon's talent more evident than in Life's a Dream, the poignant tale of a prince imprisoned at birth by his astrologer-king father and liberated on the same day a beautiful woman stumbles into his life. The interwoven themes of love, loss, power, and destiny make it the peer of such plays as Oedipus and Hamlet. With the collaboration of Jonathan Thacker of Merton College, Oxford, Michael Kidd (Augsburg College, Minnesota) offers a British adaptation of his award-winning American prose translation, recipient of the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities Publication Prize in 2004. The volume comes with a generous set of supplementary materials including critical introduction, translator's notes, suggestions for directors, bibliography, and glossary.
