Book excerpt: Team members are working on the various aspects of the collected data which hopefully will in the first instance guide the implementation of the pilot program during the remaining period of the implementation of the project. [...] In effect, most communities in the three ecological zones in Delta State are extremely vulnerable to climate change in terms of access to water because whenever rains fail to come at the right time and the quality of water in the rivers within the state declines, the people become susceptible to diseases due to the poor quality of water which they drink. [...] Vulnerability of Households to Climate Change The key findings from the surveys with regard to the vulnerability of households to climate change are as follows: The results of the survey show that some geographical and physical factors contribute to the vulnerability of households in the three ecological zones in the Niger Delta region. [...] The project is expected lead to the reduction in the vulnerability and enhancement of the resilience and adaptive capacity of rural communities to the adverse impacts of climate change in the Niger 15 Delta. [...] It was established in recognition of "importance attached to the issue of climate change and global warming, and in view of the enormity of activities required for the implementation of the Climate Change Convention and the Kyoto Protocol" (FMENV 2010).

Book excerpt: The project is therefore expected to lead to the reduction in the vulnerability and enhancement of the resilience and adaptive capacity of rural communities to the adverse impacts of climate change in the Niger Delta. [...] During the first year of the project the focus of the evaluation is largely on the process of the implementation of the project in line with the proposed activities planned for implementation. [...] Furthermore, the Evaluation team also interacted with the Principal Investigator and other members of the Research Team, Mentees, members of the Project Steering Committees, members of the Project Management Committees and project staff through physical visits and virtual meetings. [...] Capacity Building Despite the delivery of all planned research training elements, the areas of capacity that remained weak among the mentees at the end of the project were: decision-making and problem-solving related to the implementation of a complex research design and field work; responsible use and management of research technologies; data management and cleaning; quantitative and qualitative. [...] The project management system included the staff of the three participating institutions which enhanced the principle of partnership and collaboration in the implementation of the project.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a six-volume series on Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience. The series aims to fill in gaps in theory and practice in the Sendai Framework, and provides additional resources, methodologies and communication strategies to enhance the plan for action and targets proposed by the Sendai Framework. The series will appeal to a broad range of researchers, academics, students, policy makers and practitioners in engineering, environmental science and geography, geoscience, emergency management, finance, community adaptation, atmospheric science and information technology. This volume offers the international guidelines and global standards for resilient disaster risk reduction and lessons learned from disasters, particularly the COVID-19 and Cholera pandemics. A resilient health system and an effective disaster risk management Index are then suggested. The book further emphasizes urban resilience strategies with local authorities, adaptation strategies for urban heat at regional, city and local scales, and lessons from community-level interventions. Also addressed are coastal erosion, displacement and resettlement strategies. Land use planning and green infrastructure are suggested as tools for natural hazards reduction. Human security in times of climate change and urban heat at regional, city and local scales is discussed for an integrated action, with case studies based in Manila, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, Nigeria, India, Spain, and Ghana. Structure design for cascading disasters resulting from mining and flooding is presented and sustainable smart city planning using spatial data is recommended.

Book excerpt: It is essential to put rural communities in Niger Delta at the centre of actions on climate change and disaster risk reduction by empowering their inhabitants to adopt and adapt climate change strategies in innovative ways based on current and future evidence, so as to give them not only the ownership but also the confidence to take leadership of the process (CPED, 2005 and 2014). [...] Decision making and the limited role of women Farming households and their decision-making process are central to the development challenge of alleviating rural poverty as well as responding to the challenges of climate change. [...] For these reasons, decision makers and development partners at all levels need to integrate gender perspectives into the planning, financing, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of climate responses The survey carried out in Niger Delta (CPED, 2014) attempted to gauge the opinions of respondents with respect to their support for women to play key roles in climate change adaptation strate. [...] Awareness of the causes and consequences of climate change in order to sensitize rural women on the dangers of climate change and to the possible requirements/mechanisms of adaptation 2. [...] - to be able to use one's own labour in the formal and informal labour markets, to have access to loans and funds and, in the context of climate, access to international climate finance mechanisms (e.g., climate funds).

Book excerpt: With the training and empowerment of community-based stakeholders provided through the use of the guidelines, we expect beneficiaries of the training, particularly women, to understand the overall gender dimensions of climate change in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in particular and other parts of Nigeria and indeed Africa in general. [...] It is hoped that the guidelines will assist in identifying specific gender-based inequities that contribute towards the disproportionate exposure and vulnerability of women and girls to the effects of climate change, and the role of women as key agents of change in climate responses. [...] The set of roles, behaviours and attitudes that societies define as appropriate for women and men ('gender') can be the cause, consequence and mechanism of power relations, from the intimate sphere of the household to clans, communities up to the highest levels of political decision-making. [...] Discuss and interact with the participants and participants on the following characteristics of climate change and disaster occurrence in their communities Shift in the start or end of rains: Our survey shows that most of the respondents in this community and in other parts of the Niger Delta reported early onset of rain in their communities in recent years which is an indicator of climate change. [...] Some of the outcomes of the impact of climate change at the household and community levels include (i) Deceased crops and fish output and yields (ii) Loss of plants and animal species and (iii) Increase in community conflicts: Key informants particularly the females made the point that because the yield is poor and income is getting low, people have to struggle for more agricultural land for farmi.

Book excerpt: This open access book explores the intersection of gender and climate change, suggests ways in which innovative technologies can accelerate climate relief actions, and offers strategies for integrating climate change initiatives into national policies and planning. By examining the devastating consequences of climate change on women and girls throughout the continent, the authors pose a crucial question: Does gender matter in climate change discussions in Africa? Political and social traditions have burdened women with greater vulnerability to the impacts of climate-related natural disasters, including violence, displacement, poverty, famine and lack of access to clean water. However, women are also key to effective and inclusive climate mitigation, adaptation, and decision-making. The authors provide a compelling discourse that identifi es the social and economic benefi ts for all citizens when genderinclusive policies shape equitable and targeted action plans, from mitigationto adaptation and funding. The UN’s SDG 13 calls for urgent action and commitment to combat climate change. The implementable and action-oriented propositions presented in this book will be of interest to students, educators, practitioners, third-sector actors, and policymakers committed to gender equality, sustainable development and climate action in Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ending poverty and stabilizing climate change will be two unprecedented global achievements and two major steps toward sustainable development. But the two objectives cannot be considered in isolation: they need to be jointly tackled through an integrated strategy. This report brings together those two objectives and explores how they can more easily be achieved if considered together. It examines the potential impact of climate change and climate policies on poverty reduction. It also provides guidance on how to create a “win-win†? situation so that climate change policies contribute to poverty reduction and poverty-reduction policies contribute to climate change mitigation and resilience building. The key finding of the report is that climate change represents a significant obstacle to the sustained eradication of poverty, but future impacts on poverty are determined by policy choices: rapid, inclusive, and climate-informed development can prevent most short-term impacts whereas immediate pro-poor, emissions-reduction policies can drastically limit long-term ones.

Book excerpt: Adaptation is a process by which individuals, communities and countries seek to cope with the consequences of climate change. The process of adaptation is not new; the idea of incorporating future climate risk into policy-making is. While our understanding of climate change and its potential impacts has become clearer, the availability of practical guidance on adaptation has not kept pace. The development of the Adaptation Policy Framework (APF) is intended to help provide the rapidly evolving process of adaptation policy-making with a much-needed roadmap. Ultimately, the purpose of the APF is to support adaptation processes to protect - and enhance - human well-being in the face of climate change. This volume will be invaluable for everyone working on climate change adaptation and policy-making.
