Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As high achievers, women have worked hard and dedicated their lives to raising their children, to their jobs, and at educating themselves. Despite their hard work, over the years women have been marginalized, and have encountered barriers in the workplace. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of twelve empowered female leaders in organizations in Kingston, Jamaica, to discover what has contributed to their rise to leadership position. Leadership position was defined as Director, Chief Executive Officer, President, General Manager, or other senior executive position. Five themes emerged from an analysis of the collected data. These themes were used to develop an empowerment model for Jamaican women. The term empowerment may mean different things to different persons. However, irrespective of those differences, at the heart of empowerment is the word power, which plays an integral role in the empowerment process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Women and Tourist Work in Jamaica: Seven Miles of Sandy Beach, A. Lynne Bolles examines Jamaican women tourist workers and their workplaces in Negril, Jamaica. A major component of Negril’s tourism success is the labor of women tourist workers, ranging from housekeepers to hotel and business owners. Bolles’s ethnographic research examines key aspects of women’s labor in the tourist industry through the lenses of class, color, education, and training. Through the narratives of thirty interlocutors, Bolles focuses on the prescience of emotional labor and face-to-face encounters, investigating these women’s ideas about tourism on the local level and their wariness of the changing physical environment as a result of tourism expansion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fair-skinned Beverley is ridiculed in Jamaica but has the last laugh when she returns as the wife of a diplomat. Kishwana is from the inner city but is the beneficiary of uptown benevolence. Lily s life changes when her boyfriend leaves her for a white woman. Rosa gets a dream that she should take care of Zackie; and Valerie, with little education, turns to domestic work to eke out a living. These are just some of the characters who inhabit Erna Brodber s collection of short stories about Jamaican women. Engaging and absorbing, yet at once both sobering and triumphant, The World is a High Hill, demonstrates the multifaceted nature of the Jamaican woman, faced with all the trials the high hill of the world presents, at times a steeper climb for some more than for others. The stories are preceded with an enlightening foreword by Professor Verene Shepherd and close with an equally instructive interview with the author by Professor Carolyn Cooper. In this collection Brodber departs from her usual long form novel. She remains however, an uncompromising and empowering voice in Caribbean and black literature. " "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the important, yet often forgotten, roles that Jamaican women played in the World Wars. Predicated on the notion that warfare has historically been an agent of change, Dalea Bean contends that traces of this truism were in Jamaica and illustrates that women have historically been part of the war project, both as soldiers and civilians. This ground-breaking work fills a gap in the historiography of Jamaican women by positioning the World Wars as watershed periods for their changing roles and status in the colony. By unearthing critical themes such as women’s war work as civilians, recruitment of men for service in the British West India Regiment, the local suffrage movement in post-Great War Jamaica, and Jamaican women’s involvement as soldiers in the British Army during the Second World War, this book presents the most extensive and holistic account of Jamaican women’s involvement in the wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a living in the Caribbean requires resourcefulness and even a willingness to circumvent the law. Women of color in Jamaica encounter bureaucratic mazes, neighborhood territoriality, and ingrained racial and cultural prejudices. For them, it requires nothing less than a herculean effort to realize their entrepreneurial dreams. In Higglers in Kingston, Winnifred Brown-Glaude puts the reader on the ground in frenetic urban Kingston, the capital and largest city in Jamaica. She explores the lives of informal market laborers, called "higglers," across the city as they navigate a corrupt and inaccessible "official" Jamaican economy. But rather than focus merely on the present-day situation, she contextualizes how Jamaica arrived at this point, delving deep into the island's history as a former colony, a home to slaves and masters alike, and an eventual nation of competing and conflicted racial sectors. Higglers in Kingston weaves together contemporary ethnography, economic history, and sociology of race to address a broad audience of readers on a crucial economic and cultural center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

It is the distillation of the Jamaican woman's experience in fifteen compelling life stories from the internationally known Sistren Theatre Collective. Since 1977 the women of Sistren have been exploring the lives of Caribbean women, from which they create plays, workshops and screen prints for presentation throughout the Caribbean and elsewhere. This book is based on testimonies from Sistren collected and edited by Honor Ford-Smith into a vivid record of women's lives. The stories retain all the emotional depth of works of the imagination; yet they are at the same time invaluable records of oral history. Scholars of language, culture, politics and literature will need this book; the general reader will revel in it. "These `sistren' dare to present themselves just as they are - the sounds of their days and their souls intact." - Alice Walker
