Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Per Skedinger gives an excellent and balanced survey and evaluation of both the theoretical prediction and the empirical research about the consequences of legislated employment protection. From the foreword by Assar Lindbeck Employment protection legislation is one of the most controversial issues in the labour market. In this insightful book, Per Skedinger provides an overview of the design, evolution and research on the effects of employment protection legislation around the world. Most countries have some form of employment protection legislation. Against a background of high and rising unemployment in many countries, politicians and representatives of unions and businesses often have differing views as to the desirability, effects and distributional consequences of the legislation. The book covers more than one hundred international studies, dealing with the impact of legislation on productivity, personnel turnover, structural change, perceived job security, and the aggregate level and distribution of employment and unemployment. Being the first comprehensive and up-to-date survey available of economic research on the effects of employment protection, this book will appeal to researchers in economics, industrial relations and law, as well as to policymakers and practitioners dealing with employment protection issues in government, business and trade unions.

Book excerpt: Employment law is a complex and ever changing subject, which is particularly influenced by European law. This new edition provides students with fifty questions, answer plans and sample answers that highlight how best to approach the subject in preparation for an exam. Fully revised and updated, it also contains several new questions on the most topical subjects within employment law. Material covered in the new edition includes: recent decisions of both domestic courts and the European Court of Justice changes introduced by the implementation of European Directives, such as the Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 and the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 changes made by the Employment Act 2004 and the Employment Act 2002 (Dispute Resolution) Regulations 2004. For undergraduate students taking an employment law option, this book encourages students to gain the confidence they need for exam success by introducing each subject before looking at several possible exam questions and answers. Students studying for professional qualifications, such as CIPD, will also find this a useful and helpful tool.

Book excerpt: This paper explores the short-term employment effect of deregulating job protection for regular workers and how it varies with prevailing business cycle conditions. We apply a local projection method to a newly constructed “narrative” dataset of major regular job protection reforms covering 26 advanced economies over the past four decades. The analysis relies on country-sector-level data, using as an identifying assumption the fact that stringent dismissal regulations are more binding in sectors that are characterized by a higher “natural” propensity to regularly adjust their workforce. We find that the responses of sectoral employment to large job protection deregulation shocks depend crucially on the state of the economy at the time of reform——they are positive in an expansion, but become negative in a recession. These findings are consistent with theory, and are robust to a broad range of robustness checks including an Instrumental Variable approach using political economy drivers of reforms as instruments. Our results provide a case for undertaking job protection reform in good times, or for designing it in ways that enhance its short-term impact.

All chapters are absorbing and exact, with nuanced topics such as unfair dismissal, discrimination and trade union law being explored from several different angles. Pedagogical features such as Thinking points and Further reading sections enable students to consolidate and extend their knowledge. Though primarily aimed at LLB students, this book offers a wide-ranging, accurate, authoritative, contemporary and readable guide to modern employment law for all students of the subject, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Although a collaborative effort, each author focused on specific areas of employment law. Ann Lyon examined the statutory rights of employees including topics such as redundancy, unfair dismissal and discrimination and equal pay issues. Charles Barrow had primary responsibility for the introduction, the majority of the contract of employment chapters and the collective aspects of employment law.
