Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable data on fatigue properties of materials under constant amplitude loading is available in the literature under the forms representative of the different aspects of the fatigue phenomenon. To employ these data, the design engineer must adapt it to the particular service conditions that he is concerned with. The stress vs. life or S-N curve is largely related to the fatigue initiation behaviour of materials and defines the endurance limit which is used for design. The strain-life curve is of more recent origin and relates the elastic and plastic strain amplitudes to the initiation life. Fatigue propagation data are presented on a crack growth rate vs. stress intensity factor range diagram.

Book excerpt: The development of a fatigue crack-growth predictive technique for variable amplitude loading, initiated under previous NADC support, was continued. Attention was focused on a simple version of the general model. This provided a crack growth predictive formula for constant amplitude loading. Comparisons with experimental results and a semiempirical crack-growth law ahow that the prediction is quite realistic. The work has also indicated how improvements in the general model can be made to cope with more realistic service conditions. The further steps required to develop an efficient model that can cope with both variable amplitude loading and environmental effects are outlined. (Author).

Book excerpt: In order to apply the damage tolerance design philosophy to design marine structures, accurate prediction of fatigue crack growth under service conditions is required. Now, more and more people have realized that only a fatigue life prediction method based on fatigue crack propagation (FCP) theory has the potential to explain various fatigue phenomena observed. In this book, the issues leading towards the development of a unified fatigue life prediction (UFLP) method based on FCP theory are addressed. Based on the philosophy of the UFLP method, the current inconsistency between fatigue design and inspection of marine structures could be resolved. This book presents the state-of-the-art and recent advances, including those by the authors, in fatigue studies. It is designed to lead the future directions and to provide a useful tool in many practical applications. It is intended to address to engineers, naval architects, research staff, professionals and graduates engaged in fatigue prevention design and survey of marine structures, in fatigue studies of materials and structures, in experimental laboratory research, in planning the repair and maintenance of existing structures, and in rule development. The book is also an effective educational aid in naval architecture, marine, civil and mechanical engineering. Prof. Weicheng Cui is the Dean of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China. Dr. Xiaoping Huang is an associate professor of School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Dr. Fang Wang is an associate professor of Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University, China.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with structural failure (induced by mechanical, aerodynamic, acoustic and aero-thermal, loads, etc.) of modern aerospace vehicles, in particular high-speed aircraft, solid propellant rocket systems and hypersonic flight vehicles, where structural integrity, failure prediction and service life assessment are particularly challenging, due to the increasingly more demanding mission requirements and the use of non-traditional materials, such as non-metallic composites, in their construction. Prediction of the complex loading environment seen in high-speed operation and constitutive / fracture models which can adequately describe the non-linear behaviour exhibited by advanced alloys and composite materials are critical in analyzing the non-linear structural response of modern aerospace vehicles and structures. The state-of-the-art of the different structural integrity assessment and prediction methodologies (including non-destructive structural health monitoring techniques) used for the structural design, service life assessment and failure analysis of the different types of aerospace vehicles are presented. The chapters are written by experts from aerospace / defence research organizations and academia in the fields of solid mechanics, and structural mechanics and dynamics of aircraft, rocket and hypersonic systems. The book will serve as a useful reference document containing specialist knowledge on appropriate prediction methodologies for a given circumstance and experimental data acquired from multi-national collaborative programs.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general characteristics of steady-state fatigue crack growth rates are discussed. An empirical formulation is described where two constants form a basic crack growth rate versus maximum stress intensity Kmax curve, which is a straight line on a log-log graph. The constants that form the base curves for various materials are correlated to Young's modulus. A third parameter that is sensitive to material alloy and environment is described and methods for obtaining this value are presented. Crack growth rate data for several stress ratios can then be projected to the basic modulus-dependent curve, where straight line scatter bands and statistical information pertaining to the overall accuracy of the formulations can be determined.
