Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us focus on thinking positively to create what we really want in life. But science shows it's actually our feelings that matter most. In her relatable and engaging way, psychologist and researcher, Melanie Dean, Ph.D., explains not just what to do to shift your emotions and focus your energy to attract the people, things, and opportunities you want most in life, but how and why it works. Once you understand that your feelings and emotions are real energy waves that go out into the world and connect with (or repel) others, you can start to notice and shift your emotions-and intentionally direct your energy-so you are sending out the waves that will connect with what you really want. By reading The Hidden Power of Emotions, you will discover: • There is a whole world of energy at work in, around, and through you. • Your emotions, which are more powerful than your thoughts, create energy waves that leave your body, connecting with similar energy. • Your emotions are the way in which you receive communication back from the shared energy field. • How to purposefully direct your emotions to connect you with what you want to receive. Throughout the book, Dean highlights the science behind your power as well as specific tips and strategies to help you apply it in your everyday life, including a Power Zapper section of common struggles that weaken your power, and a Power Booster section of recommendations for increasing your personal power.

Book excerpt: Have you ever felt like you are not in control of your own life? Your own happiness? Have you ever wished for some external event to make you happy? If you answered, yes, then you are not alone! The self-improvement industry is worth billions of dollars and we all partake in this industry. Sure, it is really important to do self-improvement. I absolutely agree that we need to learn and develop as much as possible. I sometimes just wish that I was taught at least some of these skills when I was little! The most important of these skills, are developing emotional intelligence. How much easier would it be, if we were taught life skills as children? Right? One of the most important life skills we can teach our children is that of emotional intelligence. How to respond to their emotions, see the truth behind there emotions and react in a mature and useful way to their feelings. It really is such an important life skill. I read a study the other day, that 98% of high achievers have a Higher EQ than their counterparts. This in itself shows the importance of teaching EQ to our children to ensure we raise happy, confident and successful adults. Adults who will make an impact on this world. Just imagine a world where everyone has high EQ! Why was this journal created? I created this Journal for my two children. I read research online about how important developing EQ in children are and the impact that it would have on their adult lives. This made me realize that I needed to do everything in my power to teach them all about their emotions and how important it was to respond and take control of these instead of react to them. So, I went looking for resources to help me teach them all about their emotions. Although I found a few, I couldn't find anything that made it easy and relatable for them. That is when I created My Journal of Monstrous Emotions. A journal full of fun stories, thought provoking questions and activities that children can relate to. My children learnt so much from this journal and about their feelings and how to respond to these feelings. I now even get some much needed wise "advice" from them when my feelings overwhelm me. Next level generation! My hope is that this journal one day, finds it way into every classroom and into the hands of every child. We as parents and teachers can level-up the next generation to be better than we are, kinder, less jealous and more happy. All we need to do is help them from a young age understand the truth behind their feelings and the habits that leads to a happy, fulfilled life. I truly hope, that you will join me on this journey of transforming the next generation of adults into a happy, confident and generous generation that has high EQ and understand that emotions can be responded to instead of reacted to. Wishing you a wonderful journey with your children. Arnelle

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • With the same emotional generosity and effortlessly compelling storytelling that made All Over But the Shoutin’ a beloved bestseller, Rick Bragg continues his personal history of the Deep South. This time he’s writing about his grandfather Charlie Bundrum, a man who died before Bragg was born but left an indelible imprint on the people who loved him. Drawing on their memories, Bragg reconstructs the life of an unlettered roofer who kept food on his family’s table through the worst of the Great Depression; a moonshiner who drank exactly one pint for every gallon he sold; an unregenerate brawler, who could sit for hours with a baby in the crook of his arm. In telling Charlie’s story, Bragg conjures up the backwoods hamlets of Georgia and Alabama in the years when the roads were still dirt and real men never cussed in front of ladies. A masterly family chronicle and a human portrait so vivid you can smell the cornbread and whiskey, Ava’s Man is unforgettable.

Book excerpt: A Behavioral Scientist Notable Book of the Year * One of KCRW’s Best Reads of the Year * A Next Big Idea Club Top 21 Psychology Book of the Year * One of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year A pioneer of cultural psychology argues that emotions are not innate, but made as we live our lives together. “How are you feeling today?” We may think of emotions as universal responses, felt inside, but in Between Us, acclaimed psychologist Batja Mesquita asks us to reconsider them through the lens of what they do in our relationships, both one-on-one and within larger social networks. From an outside-in perspective, readers will understand why pride in a Dutch context does not translate well to the same emotion in North Carolina, or why one’s anger at a boss does not mean the same as your anger at a partner in a close relationship. By looking outward at relationships at work, school, and home, we can better judge how our emotions will be understood, how they might change a situation, and how they change us. Brilliantly synthesizing original psychological studies and stories from peoples across time and geography, Between Us skillfully argues that acknowledging differences in emotions allows us to find common ground, humanizing and humbling us all for the better.

Book excerpt: Why attractive things work better and other crucial insights into human-centered design Emotions are inseparable from how we humans think, choose, and act. In Emotional Design, cognitive scientist Don Norman shows how the principles of human psychology apply to the invention and design of new technologies and products. In The Design of Everyday Things, Norman made the definitive case for human-centered design, showing that good design demanded that the user's must take precedence over a designer's aesthetic if anything, from light switches to airplanes, was going to work as the user needed. In this book, he takes his thinking several steps farther, showing that successful design must incorporate not just what users need, but must address our minds by attending to our visceral reactions, to our behavioral choices, and to the stories we want the things in our lives to tell others about ourselves. Good human-centered design isn't just about making effective tools that are straightforward to use; it's about making affective tools that mesh well with our emotions and help us express our identities and support our social lives. From roller coasters to robots, sports cars to smart phones, attractive things work better. Whether designer or consumer, user or inventor, this book is the definitive guide to making Norman's insights work for you.
