In unserem Alltag gibt es kaum Situationen, in denen uns keine Emotion begleitet. Sie beeinflussen unser Handeln, Denken und unsere sozialen Kontakte. Der angemessene Umgang mit den eigenen und fremden Emotionen ist ein zentraler Entwicklungsschritt der Kindheit. Die sogenannte emotionale Kompetenz ist der Grundstein eines glücklichen Lebens mit positiven Beziehungserfahrungen. Zunächst wird der Begriff der Emotion definiert. Es folgt ein Überblick über die Entwicklung der primären und sekundären Emotionen. Wie diese erkannt und ausgedrückt werden können und welche Voraussetzungen dafür gegeben sein müssen, sind Bestandteil des darauffolgenden Unterkapitels. Im dritten Teil liegt der Fokus auf der Praxis. Es werden Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, mithilfe derer Eltern und Betreuer*innen die emotionale Entwicklung der Kinder fördern können. Einer dieser Möglichkeiten ist das Gefühlstagebuch „Ein gutes Gefühl“ für Kinder von sechs bis elf Jahren, welches als Praxisbeispiel dieser Arbeit dient. Es folgt eine Kritik zum Thema Achtsamkeit und Emotion und ein abschließendes Fazit.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit der emotionalen Entwicklung von Säuglingen und Kleinkindern und zeigt Fördermöglichkeiten auf, die sich den Eltern bieten, um die emotionale Entwicklung bei ihren Kindern bestmöglich zu begleiten. Zu Beginn kläre ich den Terminus Emotion und erläutere den Unterschied zwischen primären und sekundären Emotionen. In diesem Zusammenhang werde ich auf die Entstehung von Emotionen eingehen, indem ich zuerst die Emotionen bei Säuglingen betrachte und dann zu den Emotionen bei Kleinkindern übergehe. Darauffolgend werde ich die Entwicklung von Emotionsregulationsstrategien anhand von verschiedenen Phasen, die durchlaufen werden, erläutern. Am Ende meiner Arbeit stelle ich Handlungsmöglichkeiten für Eltern vor, da diese in den ersten Lebensjahren eines Kindes den größten Einfluss auf die emotionalen Fertigkeiten der Kinder haben. Diese Möglichkeiten sollen Hilfestellungen sein, mit denen Eltern ihren Kindern zu einem emotional kompetenten Verhalten verhelfen.
