Book excerpt: Stewards of the profession and protectors of the nation, Army leaders have an immense responsibility to ensure the current and future success of the Army. This responsibility is less about the hard skills of cognitive intelligence, technical knowledge, and tactical proficiency and more about the soft skills of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence competencies parallel, enhance, and even enable the Army leader attributes and competencies. The Army leadership doctrine fails to identify a direct relationship between emotional intelligence competencies and the Army leader attributes and competencies, yet implies that emotional skills are an integral part of the characteristics and capabilities of an Army leader. This study examines the relationship between emotional intelligence competencies and the attributes and core competencies required of an Army leader. A clear understanding of the emotional intelligence requirements that Army leader's use in the act of leading creates a more balanced and comprehensive illustration of Army leader requirements. An understanding of the relationship between emotional intelligence and what is required of an Army leader can lead to modifications in Army leadership doctrine, leader assessments, professional Army leader development programs, and Army leader evaluation practices. Introduction: Leadership has often been viewed as more of an art than a science. However, the expanding field of neuroscience is confirming that leadership may be more science than art. While the thinking components of the brain have been noticeably evolving along with the pace of technology, the emotional parts are still very primitive, yet play an important role in leadership and behavior. The latest neurological, psychological, and organizational research is converging towards the fact that emotional leadership is the key ingredient to an organization’s performance. Successfully leading in dynamic, complex environments, making wise decisions while facing tremendous resource constraints, avoiding moral and ethical lapses, preventing failures in leadership, building healthy relationships, and fostering resiliency across the workforce is less about the hard skills of cognitive intelligence and more about the soft skills of emotional intelligence. Leaders still need foundational, cognitive skills, but they cannot lead solely from their intellect in today’s interconnected world. Contains the following studies / publications: 1. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE COMPETENCIES AND THE ARMY LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS MODEL 2. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND LEADER PERFORMANCE 3. THE FAILURE OF SUCCESS: HOW THE BATHSHEBA SYNDROME AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE CONTRIBUTE TO THE DOWNFALL OF ARMY ORGANIZATIONAL-LEVEL LEADER 4. Emotional Intelligence: Advocating for the Softer Side of Leadership 5. Lack of Emotional Intelligence as a Factor in the Relief of US Army Commanders 6. Refinement and Validation of a Military Emotional Intelligence Training Program 7. DEVELOPING A CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE CAPABILITY 8. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2008 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Berlin, course: Soft Skills & Leadership Qualities, language: English, abstract: Today, in a fast changing business environment, leaders need to manage an empowered workforce and go more and more beyond consultative, cooperative and democratic leadership styles. The today’s workforce does not accept an autocratic leadership style as they have now far more options and choices. In addition, there is a growing sense of democracy and independence in the workforce. Emotional Intelligence has become a vital and more and more important part of how today’s leaders meet the significant challenges they face. Emotion is known to alter thinking in many ways. It seems that Emotional Intelligence can help leaders in an evermore difficult leadership role, one that fewer and fewer leaders seem capable of fulfilling. And especially in the highest levels in organizations Emotional Intelligence can give developing leaders a competitive edge. The bottom line is that the manager who can think about emotions accurately and clearly may often be better able to anticipate, cope with, and effectively manage change. But provides the concept of Emotional Intelligence the answer to the question what the best leader differentiates from the average one? The following assignment aims at clarifying the role of emotional intelligence in leadership. Chapter 2 gives an overview of the theoretical framework surrounding the emotional intelligence concept by stating the most important models and its measurements. Chapter 3 points out the leaders’ emotional intelligence competencies to successful manage the organizations tasks. It also provides ways and even exercises of how to develop emotional intelligence and resonant leadership? To get the big picture, the last chapter explicitly summarizes the importance of emotional intelligence in the business field by also pointing out some critics to the Emotional Intelligence model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competent leaders of character are necessary for the Army to meet the challenges in the dangerous and complex security environment we face. As the keystone leadership manual for the United States Army, FM 6-22 establishes leadership doctrine, the fundamental principles by which Army leaders act to accomplish their mission and care for their people. FM 6-22 applies to officers, warrant officers, noncommissioned officers, and enlisted Soldiers of all Army components, and to Army civilians. From Soldiers in basic training to newly commissioned officers, new leaders learn how to lead with this manual as a basis. FM 6-22 is prepared under the direction of the Army Chief of Staff. It defines leadership, leadership roles and requirements, and how to develop leadership within the Army. It outlines the levels of leadership as direct, organizational, and strategic, and describes how to lead successfully at each level. It establishes and describes the core leader competencies that facilitate focused feedback, education, training, and development across all leadership levels. It reiterates the Army Values. FM 6-22 defines how the Warrior Ethos is an integral part of every Soldier's life. It incorporates the leadership qualities of self-awareness and adaptability and describes their critical impact on acquiring additional knowledge and improving in the core leader competencies while operating in constantly changing operational environments. In line with evolving Army doctrine, FM 6-22 directly supports the Army's capstone manuals, FM 1 and FM 3-0, as well as keystone manuals such as FM 5-0, FM 6-0, and FM 7-0. FM 6-22 connects Army doctrine to joint doctrine as expressed in the relevant joint doctrinal publications, JP 1 and JP 3-0. As outlined in FM 1, the Army uses the shorthand expression of BE-KNOW-DO to concentrate on key factors of leadership. What leaders DO emerges from who they are (BE) and what they KNOW. Leaders are prepared throughout their lifetimes with respect to BE-KNOW-DO so they will be able to act at a moment's notice and provide leadership for whatever challenge they may face. FM 6-22 expands on the principles in FM 1 and describes the character attributes and core competencies required of contemporary leaders. Character is based on the attributes central to a leader's make-up, and competence comes from how character combines with knowledge, skills, and behaviors to result in leadership. Inextricably linked to the inherent qualities of the Army leader, the concept of BE-KNOW-DO represents specified elements of character, knowledge, and behavior described here in FM 6-22.

As opposed to Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and individual personality, EI can be taught, learned, and improved. EI development progresses through emulation, training and practice. Because advanced EI attributes promote success in the workplace, the U.S. Department of Defense acknowledges (at varying levels within the Services) the necessity to develop EI within its leadership. Film viewing is a useful tool to teach and develop EI leadership competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. This innovative technique can be applied formally and informally in Professional Military Education, as an individual self-help guide, in leadership development forums at the unit or group, or as a military recruiting aid."--Abstract.
