Download or read book The Collected Letters of Charlotte Smith written by Judith Phillips Stanton and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-02 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most popular poets of her time, Charlotte Smith revived the sonnet form in England, influencing Wordsworth and Keats. Equally popular as a novelist, she experimented with many genres, and even her children's books were highly regarded by her contemporaries. Charlotte Smith's letters enlarge our understanding of her literary achievement, for they show the private world of spirit, determination, anger, and sorrow in which she wrote. Despite her family's diligence in destroying her papers, almost 500 of Smith's letters survived in 22 libraries, archives, and private collections. The present edition makes available most of these never-before-published letters to publishers, patrons, solicitors, relatives, and friends. As this volume was going to press, the Petworth House archives turned up 56 additional lost letters not seen in at least 100 years. Most are from Smith's early career, along with two letters to her troublesome husband, Benjamin. The archives also preserved 50 letters by Benjamin, the only ones by him known to have survived. Two letters from Benjamin to Charlotte are reprinted in full, and generous excerpts from the rest are included in footnotes, bringing a shadowy figure to life.
Book Synopsis Placing Charlotte Smith by : Jacqueline M. Labbe
Download or read book Placing Charlotte Smith written by Jacqueline M. Labbe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lively and far-ranging interest in place, space, and situation characterizes the work of Romantic-era British author Charlotte Smith (1749-1806). Featuring ten original essays, an introduction and an epilogue, this volume offers new insights into Smith’s life and work by exploring two central issues: Smith’s place as a foundational writer in her period, and her contribution to the creation of “place” as a concept of social and literary importance. The contributors analyze themes such as itineracy, the natural world, and patriotism; they also explore the position of Smith’s work and authorial identity in terms of genre, aesthetics, and market dynamics. With its innovative approach to place as a material location, symbolic principle, and literary device, this volume advances our understanding of Smith’s work. Placing Charlotte Smith reveals Smith as an author who not only energizes our interest in domestic concerns, but who also shapes a global discourse constituted by changing ideas about borders, travel, national, and international identities.

Book Synopsis Jane Austen's Manuscript Works by : Jane Austen
Download or read book Jane Austen's Manuscript Works written by Jane Austen and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Jane Austen died, at the age of 41, she left behind her not only six novels but a large number of manuscripts, ranging from juvenile works to the novel that she was writing at the time of her final illness. The six published novels are now undisputed classics. The manuscripts, however, despite the extraordinary writing they contain and the way in which they illuminate Jane Austen’s work as a novelist, are much less well known. From the brilliance of the juvenilia to the urbane modernity of ‘Sanditon’ these works show Austen pushing the conventional boundaries of fiction, exploring the implications of vulgarity and violence, experimenting with different styles and tones, and practicing and refining her arts of narrative. This Broadview Edition includes “Lady Susan,’ “The Watsons,” “Sanditon,” and ten important early manuscript works. Historical appendices include Austen’s letters on fiction; continuations written by Austen’s niece and nephew of two of her early works; and Sir Walter Scott’s important critical appraisal of Austen from 1816.
Book Synopsis The English Novel, 1770-1829: 1770-1799 by : Peter Garside
Download or read book The English Novel, 1770-1829: 1770-1799 written by Peter Garside and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical bibliography provides an entirely new foundation for the literary history of the late eighteenth century and the Romantic age. Offering a fresh assessment of the work of all novelists of the period, the two volumes address problems faced by generations of literary scholars and historians concerned with the development of the English novel. This first volume records full details of all known prose novels in English first published in the British Isles in the final three decades of the eighteenth century. They include many new discoveries, attributions to an extraordinary range of novelists and the first English translations of much Continental popular fiction. The bibliography firmly establishes publication details for many novels now apparently without any extant copies. A leading feature of the bibliography is its examination of a copy of every identified surviving novel. Research by James Raven, Antonia Forster, and many other international collaborators, has allowed a reconstruction of the full cast of British novelists of the period, their publishers and reviewers. A full transcription of titles and imprint lines is given, together with much other bibliographical and historical information, including contemporary reviews (with generous quotation), dedications, and pricing and printing details. Shelf-mark, microform and other library references assist readers to consult the surviving novels in modern library and research collections all over the world. In an introductory historical essay, James Raven considers the different themes embraced by the novel, profiles of popular authorship, translation, the economics and circumstances of novel production and design, and the scope of literary circulation and reception. By revisiting this history of the novel, identifying rare books now scattered across the world, and reconstructing the history of popular literature now lost, the volume challenges existing literary canons and refines our understanding of the range of imaginative writing and authorship in a critical period of English literature.
Book Synopsis A Literary History of Women's Writing in Britain, 1660–1789 by : Susan Staves
Download or read book A Literary History of Women's Writing in Britain, 1660–1789 written by Susan Staves and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-07 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on three decades of feminist scholarship bent on rediscovering lost and abandoned women writers, Susan Staves provides a comprehensive history of women's writing in Britain from the Restoration to the French Revolution. This major work of criticism also offers fresh insights about women's writing in all literary forms, not only fiction, but also poetry, drama, memoir, autobiography, biography, history, essay, translation and the familiar letter. Authors celebrated in their own time and who have been neglected, and those who have been revalued and studied, are given equal attention. The book's organisation by chronology and its attention to history challenge the way we periodise literary history. Each chapter includes a list of key works written in the period covered, as well as a narrative and critical assessment of the works. This magisterial work includes a comprehensive bibliography and list of prevalent editions of the authors discussed.
