Book excerpt: Charged particle accelerators, such as the ones that power Free Electron Lasers (FEL), require high quality (low emittance) beams for efficient operation. Accurate and reliable beam diagnostics are essential to monitoring beam parameters in order to maintain a high quality beam. Optical Transition Radiation Interferometry (OTRI) has shown potential to be a quality diagnostic that is especially useful for high brightness electron beams such as Jefferson Labs FEL energy recovery linac. The purpose of this project is to further develop OTRI beam diagnostic techniques. An optical system was designed to make beam size and divergence measurements as well as to prepare for experiments in optical phase space mapping. Beam size and beam divergence measurements were taken to calculate the emittance of the Jefferson Lab FEL. OTRI is also used to separate core and halo beam divergences in order to estimate core and halo emittance separately.

This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Transition Radiation Interferometry (OTRI) has proven to be effective tool for measuring rms beam divergence. We present rms emittance measurement results of the 115 MeV energy recovery linac at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratories Free electron Laser using OTRI. OTRI data from both near field beam images and far field angular distribution images give evidence of two spatial and angular distributions within the beam. Using the unique features of OTRI we segregate the two distributions of the beam and estimate separate rms emittance values for each component.

Book Synopsis Optical Transition Radiation Measurements for the Los Alamos and Boeing Free-Electron Laser Experiments by :
Download or read book Optical Transition Radiation Measurements for the Los Alamos and Boeing Free-Electron Laser Experiments written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) measurements of the electron-beam emittance have been performed at a location just before the wiggler in the Los Alamos Free-Electron Laser (FEL) experiment. Beam profiles and beam divergence patterns from a single macropulse were recorded simultaneously using two intensified charge-injection device (CID) television cameras and an optical beamsplitter. Both single-foil OTR and two-foil OTR interference experiments were performed. Preliminary results are compared to a reference variable quadrupole, single screen technique. New aspects of using OTR properties for pointing the e-beam on the FEL oscillator axis, as well as measuring e-beam emittance are addressed. 7 refs., 9 figs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 22nd International Free Electron Laser Conference and 7th FEL User Workshop were held August 13-18, 2000 at Washington Duke Inn and Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, USA. The conference and the workshop were hosted by Duke University's Free Electron laser (FEL) Laboratory. Following tradition, the FEL prize award was announced at the banquet. The year 2000 FEL prize was awarded to three scientists propelling the limits of high power FELs: Steven Benson, Eisuke Minehara and George Neill. The conference program was comprised of traditional oral sessions on First Lasing, FEL theory, storage ring FELs, linac and high power FELs, long wavelength FELs, SASE FELs, accelerator and FEL physics and technology, and new developments and proposals. Two sessions on accelerator and FEL physics and technology reflected the emphasis on the high quality of accelerators and components for modern FELs. The breadth of the applications was presented in the workshop oral sessions on materials processing, biomedical and surgical applications, physics and chemistry as well as on instrumentation and methods for FEL applications. A special oral session was dedicated to FEL center status reports for users to learn more about the opportunities with FELs. As usual, the oral sessions were supplemented by poster sessions with in-depth discussions and communications. The FEL physicists and FEL users had excellent opportunities to interact throughout the duration of the event, culminating a Joint Sessions. The year 2000 was very successful being marked by lasing with two SASE and one storage ring short-wavelength FELs, and by the first human surgery with the use of FEL, to mention but a few. The International Program Committee and chairs of the sessions had the challenging and exciting problem of selecting invived and contributed talks for the conferences and the workshop from the influx of abstracts mentioning new results and ideas. The success of the conference was determined by these contributions. Scientists from 15 countries gave 70 talks, presented 176 posters and submitted 146 papers, which are published in the present volume of proceedings.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modulated beam of the free electron laser when passed through a thin target should produce strong transition radiation. The measurement of the transition radiation is a direct measurement of the electron beam modulation in the free electron laser A transition radiation experiment using the Stanford MKIII Infrared Free Electron Laser (IRFEL) has been proposed. The analysis has centered on TRANSPORT, a computer program used for designing charged particle beam systems. The MKIII IRFEL wiggler exit bending magnet system was modeled using TRANSPORT. Analysis reveals that the transverse emittance and momentum spread characteristics will cause the modulated beam to demodulate along the path of the central trajectory. A detector location 10 millimeters downstream of the first bending magnet is found suitable for the measurement of the electron beam modulation. For this case the thin foil must be rotated approximately 11.25 degrees about the y axis to yield a minimum effective picobunch extent as seen by the thin foil. Alternate FEL systems are suggested for investigation.

Book Synopsis The Jefferson Lab Free Electron Laser Program by :
Download or read book The Jefferson Lab Free Electron Laser Program written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Free Electron Laser (FEL) called the IR Demo is operational as a user facility at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia, USA. It utilizes a 48 MeV superconducting accelerator that not only accelerates the beam but also recovers about 80% of the electron-beam power that remains after the FEL interaction. Utilizing this recirculation loop the machine has recovered cw average currents up to 5 mA, and has lased cw above 2 kW output at 3.1 microns. It is capable of output in the 1 to 6 micron range and can produce (almost equal to)0.7 ps pulses in a continuous train at (almost equal to)75 MHz. This pulse length has been shown to be nearly optimal for deposition of energy in materials at the surface. Upgrades under construction will extend operation beyond 10 kW average power in the near IR and produce multi-kilowatt levels of power from 0.3 to 25 microns. This talk will cover the performance measurements of this groundbreaking laser, scaling in near-term planned upgrades, and highlight some of the user activities at the facility.
Book Synopsis Introduction to THz Wave Photonics by : Xi-Cheng Zhang
Download or read book Introduction to THz Wave Photonics written by Xi-Cheng Zhang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz) radiation, which is electromagnetic radiation in a frequency int- val from 0.3 to 10 THz (1 mm–30 ?m wavelength), is the next frontier in science and technology. This band occupies a large portion of the electromagnetic sp- trum between the infrared and microwave bands. Basic research, new initiatives, and developments in advanced sensing and imaging technology with regard to the THz band remain unexplored compared to the relatively well-developed science and technology in the microwave and optical frequencies. Historically, THz technologies were used mainly within the astronomy c- munity for studying the background of cosmic far-infrared radiation, and by the laser-fusion community for the diagnostics of plasmas. Since the ?rst demonstration of THz wave time-domain spectroscopy in the late 1980s, there has been a series of signi?cant advances (particularly in recent years) as more intense THz sources and higher sensitivity detectors provide new opportunities for understanding the basic science in the THz frequency range.
