Download or read book Emissions Trading and Competitiveness written by Michael Grubb and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complying with the forthcoming tightening of CO2 emission allocations in the EU may mean big bills for the industries affected. In this special issue of Climate Policy journal, leading experts examine the impacts on competitiveness and the commercial incentives available from the CO2 allowance allocations under the methodologies, and whether - and if so at what stage - the ETS itself may need to be amended. The study is multidisciplinary, combining economic, legal and policy analysis with specific studies of impacts on electricity, cement and other industrial sectors and the allocation issues. It brings together the results of research conducted over the past two year from various research centres and consultancies in Europe, and in particular, work commissioned by the Carbon Trust and Climate Strategies Network. Through these, it presents the most comprehensive and detailed set of analyses yet conducted of the impacts of allocation on competitiveness - one of the most critical issues for the sectors affected and for the operation of the ETS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Dales pointed out that traditional economic and legal solutions to pollution and resource problems were never going to be satisfactory and that a "third way" was needed. Today, all environmental economists of my generation recognise the debt we owe to Dales's work, as one of the intellectual foundations for emissions trading that began in California in the 1970s and now extends across the world. It is a work of immense influence which deserves reprinting.' - David Pearce, University College London, UK In this classic book, originally published in 1968 by University of Toronto Press, John Dales proposed a new policy instrument for tackling pollution problems, namely 'markets in pollution rights'. Dales was one of the first economists to put forward such a solution, and in subsequent years a system of emissions trading has evolved which is now a centrepiece in international discussions of how to address the problem of global climate change.

It is expected to warm by 1.4 to 5.8 degrees Celsius by the end of this century. The current warming trend is expected to cause extinctions. Many plant and animal species, already damaged by pollution and loss of habitat, are not expected to survive till the next century. Human beings are likely to face mounting impacts such as raising sea level, decrease of drinking water springs and, deserts may expand into existing farmlands. The main reason for growing thermometer is the industrialisation with burning of ever-greater quantities of oil, gasoline, and coal, the destroying of forests and some farming methods which especially causes carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. These activities cause an increasing amount of 'greenhouse gases' in the atmosphere. The effect is that the global temperature is increasing artificially. Global warming involving the entire world which most countries joined an international treaty, under the umbrella of the United Nations, to begin to consider what can be done to reduce global warming. Therefore, in 1997 governments agreed to an addition to the consisting treaty, namely the 'Kyoto Protocol' (UNFCCC, 2005). [...]
