Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eminent English Liberals in and Out of Parliament These biographic sketches of "Eminent English Liberals" appeared in the old country shortly before the fall of the Beaconsfield administration. That event fulfilled the hopes and anticipations of the writer so completely, that, in preparing this edition for the American press, he has deemed it inexpedient to alter the original text in almost any particular. The only important change effected is one of name: "Liberal" has been substituted for "Radical" on the title-page to avoid possible misinterpretation. Truly regarded, Americans and Englishmen form but one mighty people, moved by common instincts and identical interests. Especially ought the great contemporary thinkers and doers of both countries to be made common property; and, should this volume contribute in some little measure towards so desirable an end, its primary object will have been attained. Download or read book Joseph Chamberlain written by I. Cawood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winston Churchill described Joseph Chamberlain as 'the man who made the weather' for twenty years in British politics between the 1880s and the 1900s. This volume contains contributions on every aspect of Chamberlain's career, including international and cultural perspectives hitherto ignored by his many biographers. It breaks his career into three aspects: his career as an international statesman, defender of British interests and champion of imperial federation; his role as a national leader, opposing Gladstone's crusade for Irish home rule by forming an alliance with the Conservatives, campaigning for social reform and finally advocating a protectionist economic policy to promote British business; and the aspect for which he is still celebrated in his adopted city, as the provider of sanitation, gas lighting, clean water and cultural achievement for Birmingham – a model of civic regeneration that still inspires modern politicians such as Michael Heseltine, Tristram Hunt and David Willetts.

Book Synopsis Down with the Crown' by : Antony Taylor
Download or read book Down with the Crown' written by Antony Taylor and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, periodic discontent with the monarchy has become an aspect of political life in both Britain and the Commonwealth. While a number of important books have attempted to reappraise the British royal family, the study of anti-monarchism has by contrast been neglected. Down with the Crown seeks to fill this gap and to modify assumptions about the failure of radicals to contest monarchy effectively by looking at the issue of anti-monarchism in British politics from the French Revolution to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. It also deals with debates about the House of Lords and with the republican movements in former colonies such as Australia. At a time when European integration, devolution in Wales and Scotland, and reform of the House of Lords are forcing Britain to take stock of its governing institutions, this book represents a significant contribution to the debates surrounding the House of Windsor.
