Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrations held in the main towns of Natal on the centenary of the first organised emigration from Great Britain inspired the writing of this book, first published in 1950. The author, Alan F. Hattersley was Professor of History at Pietermariitzberg for many years and made himself an authority on this particular part of British Imperial consequences of the wave of emigration to Natal, which was strongest between 1848 and 1851. It treats not only of Natal, but of rural and urban conditions in England, as a background to the lives of the many named families of emigrants. It deals with many of these families by name and with personal experiences of the early settlers, often in detail, the author's researches having been conducted in England as well in Natal. He has discovered and described how settlers were procured, how they were transported and the occupations that they took up on arrival. Such a book, intimate in its historical detail and most readably written, will be of interest to general readers and of service to all students of imperial history and of migration problems.

Book Synopsis The History of the Indians in Natal by : Mabel Palmer
Download or read book The History of the Indians in Natal written by Mabel Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian problem in Natal is in one sense a small matter; it concerns about a quarter of a million persons set in a large and under-populated country. But it has become so entwined with racial prejudices, so interwoven with international considerations, so much the centre of complicated interlocking interests and sentiments that many good judges declare it to be insoluble. Further, the circumstances which led to the introduction of Indians to Natal and the conditions on which the Indian and British governments sanctioned their coming are so generally unknown that still more obscurity is cast on the whole subject, and arguments totally unjustifiable if all the facts were known are yet the common coin of party politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Colony of Port Natal: With Information for Emigrants; Accompanied With an Explanatory Map, by the Government Official Surveyor Smcn the Author of this Work returned to Natal, his adopted country, the Publisher has received, from several quarters, applications for more copies, which has induced him to put to press a Second Edition. There is now added an Explanatory Map - the most ample and correct of any which has yet been printed. The publication of the Pamphlet originated in the desire to give varied and useful Information on this new but rising Colony; not wishing, by any of its statements, to lure away any parties from their fatherland, who already have a competency, with every social comfort. Persons, in such temporal cir cumstances, have no call, either from reason or pro vidence, to emigrate to a foreign land. But there are many who, from various causes, are now suffering under the pressure of temporal embarrassment, and are most anxious to gain accurate information in re ference to our numerous Colonies. To meet such enquiries, the following miscellaneous notices about Natal are placed in the hands of the reader. From the testimony of many, its statements and sugges tions have been received with gratitude by those who are interested in this subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natal: Its Early History, Rise, Progress and Future Prospects, as a Field for Emigration Colonist. Other sections have been handled very briefly. They, however, could not have been more full without rendering the book, from its size, less convenient and useful, and the price would necessarily have been increased. As it is, although of a size to be conveniently carried in the pocket, the work contains information on almost every subject of utility and interest, brought down as closely as possible to the time of publication. The writer makes no claim to originality or literary excellence, but has simply aimed to reduce to some shape and form a mass of information useful and important to emigrants who lack the books of reference to which he has applied. Book Synopsis British Settlers in Natal, 1824-1857 by : Shelagh O'Byrne Spencer
Download or read book British Settlers in Natal, 1824-1857 written by Shelagh O'Byrne Spencer and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume of British Settlers in Natal is part of a massive research project to identify immigrants who came to Natal from Britain before 1858, and to collect biographical material on them and their children. The year 2000 was the year chosen to commemorate the advent of the largest body of settlers, those despatched by J.C. Byrne & Co. in the years 1849-1851. Although Spencer's work focuses on British immigrants who came to settle in Natal, its interest and usefulness are not confined to this region. Some of the new Natalians, and many of the next generation, moved all over South Africa, and indeed all over the world. Spencer's work has already proved to be indispensable to anyone doing research into Natal history, and libraries will welcome this new volume. This seventh volume covers Gadney to Guy.
