This book was released on 1938 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume of this work, covering the period from 1741-1850, was issued in 1931 by another publisher, and is reissued now without change, under our imprint. The second volume covers the period from 1850 to 1865; the third volume, the period from 1865 to 1885. For each chronological period, Mr. Mott has provided a running history which notes the occurrence of the chief general magazines and the developments in the field of class periodicals, as well as publishing conditions during that period, the development of circulations, advertising, payments to contributors, reader attitudes, changing formats, styles and processes of illustration, and the like. Then in a supplement to that running history, he offers historical sketches of the chief magazines which flourished in the period. These sketches extend far beyond the chronological limitations of the period. The second and third volumes present, altogether, separate sketches of seventy-six magazines, including The North American Review, The Youth's Companion, The Liberator, The Independent, Harper's Monthly, Leslie's Weekly, Harper's Weekly, The Atlantic Monthly, St. Nicholas, and Puck. The whole is an unusual mirror of American civilization.

Book excerpt: One tiny act of kindness can have a huge impact. And in this heartwarming, hopeful, absolutely true story, a simple letter does just that. A true story that quickly went viral, this is now a timely, extraordinary picture book. Sincerely, Emerson follows eleven-year-old Emerson Weber as she writes a letter of thanks to her postal carrier, Doug, and creates a nationwide outpouring of love. This is a story of gratitude, hope, and recognition: for all the essential helpers we see everyday, and all those who go unseen. Perfect for sharing alongside such favorites as Pat Zietlow Miller and Jen Hill's Be Kind and Matt de la Peña and Loren Long's Love. There are lots of ways to help the world go round: Some people collect the trash. Some stock grocery shelves. Some drive buses and trains. Some help people who are sick. Some deliver our mail. And some people write letters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson College Magazine, Vol. 18: December, 1909 Dear friends, I wish you all a merry Christmas; and may the Spirit of the Savior be with you every one; for I feel that by His love I have surmounted great suffering, and have been able to Sing with gladness, so that faith did make me whole, and I am full of more abounding life and dynamic energy of Spirit than I have felt for years, through which I have been striving towards the light. If I can express half the wondrous beauty of life I see in tree, and light, and water, in the whole world of flashing messages from God, if I can vocalize the aspirations of many seers and sages and poets, if I can even suggest the weight of meaning in it all, I will not have striven in vain to find the Spirit Of God in the realm of pain and purification through which I have passed. Once more, God's blessing on us as we near the Christmastide, and may the New Year bring peace on earth, good will toward men. Book excerpt: This book connects the awakening of hope that led to the election of Barack Obama with a rebirth of Emerson's great Dream of "this new yet unapproachable America". This is the first book to combine Emerson's energising teachings for individuals with the theme of achieving America's unique promise as a nation. It is a timely message about the ground of our being and the future of our country and offers strength and confidence to readers who dream (as Emerson did) of an America devoted to equality, social justice, and economic opportunity for all its citizens.
