Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personality of Emerson In my nineteenth year, as I was reading Greek with Professor Hoyt of the Exeter Academy, he related to me how his classmates at Dartmouth invited Emerson in 1838 to give them that grand discourse on Literary Ethics which was one of the first of his orations I had read, how few under stood it, and how Emerson repelled the proposal of reporting it. I curse the Reporters, said the gentle sage, I curse them; so, at least, my old teacher reported that Emerson at Hanover had said to him. But when, many years after, I cited this remark to Emerson, he could not believe he had made it. But his opinion was so constant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson and Goethe T o the student of Emerson there lies no little interest in the study of his relation to those men and minds whose works deeply impressed him and from whom his own thought derived considerable comfort and substantiation. These men were in a sense spiritual companions to him throughout his life, and in our study of his regard for their genius we gain clearer understanding, not so much of this or that particular man, but far more of Emerson himself. Indeed Emerson as a critic is oftentimes the best critic of Emerson. Thus in his divers comment on Goethe we find at once sympathetic insight and admira tion interspersed with unhappy misunderstanding. Cen sure. And condemnation, and though we do not always meet the real Goethe, we are alwavs confronted with the real Emerson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson and His Philosophy All of us now realise, as never before, how tremendously important it is that the British and their American cousins should be united in unbreak able amity. Together, they can almost (or quite) secure the peace of the world, even without help with the other nations which are joining the League they will be able to secure it beyond doubt, so far as any extensive war is concerned. And the best way of bringing about close friendship is mutual understanding, to which a reading of each other's literature is an important contributory. Americans know English literature, for it is the parent of their 'owp but the British do not know American literature as they ought. And it seems to me that anything tending to increase this knowledge is entirely good. If my little volume sends a few readers to sit at the feet of America's greatest Prophet, I shall be well content. They will be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Emerson: His Life and Writings That is always best which gives me to myself. The sublime is excited in me by the great Stoical doctrine, Obey thyself.' That which shows God in me fortifies me. That which shows God out of me makes me a wart and a wen. There is no longer a necessary reason for my being. Already the long shadows of untimely oblivion creep over me, and I shall decease for ever. By his holy thoughts Jesus serves us, and thus only. To aim to convert aman by miracles is a profanation of the soul. A true conversion a true Christ is now, as always, to be made by the reception of beautiful sentiments. It is true that a great and rich soul like his, falling among the simple, does so preponderate, ' that, as his did, it moves the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson, How to Know Him The mind of Emerson was a searchlight re vealing not itself but the various objects on which it successively turned. An intense and narrow beam of light would shoot through the darkness and reveal some object. Then it would pick up another Ob j ect which would have its brief moment of visibility. The landscape was never revealed in any one view. The only way to know Emerson is to join him in his intellectual exercises. In Spite of his per sonal aloofness I know of no one with whom we can - more readily come to a feeling of intellectual intimacy. He had no pretensions and no reserves. In clear sentences he told us what from time to time he thought. He made no attempt to connect these thoughts into a coherent system. For any one else to attempt to do this would be to misrep resent him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Emerson One truth of vital importance must, therefore, be learned, nothing abides except Spirit. Matter and its accidents under go unintermitted change. Life is fluid, not solid; progressive, not stationary. The soul is. When once this truth has been grasped we wonder no longer why laws, religions, and social customs cannot be permanent. They are dams made to fit one time; the river of Humanity flows through all thes. See, for example, how significant this is when applied to ethics. The ethical codes, one after another, grow too small, and must be cast ofi, or repaired and enlarged. As men's faith in a personal God diminishes, their need of a personal symbol of him diminishes; Christ the Man has more significance than Christ the God. Likewise, many enlightened persons no longer believe in everlasting damnation, a scheme of compensation evidently contrary to all the testimony of life, because it assumes that the universal flux will cease and that the guilty soul will remain in a fixed shape in hell, in spite of the fact that all souls are moving. Moreover, it attaches an absolute value to a human, relative act. Which of us would dare to assert that a single act or a single thought is the summary and completion of his career, or that it is even conceivable that any momentary experience should become solid, unchanged forevermore? Look where we will, development, or unfolding, is going on; no end is reached, or thinkable. The human imagination has drawn a finite, temporal hell to do what it intends shall be an infinite and eternal work. Let us beware of using our foot-rule and hour-glass to measure immeasurable Space and Time. All human theories of retribution must be false if they are false to this law of life namely, Growth, or Being, or Becoming. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journals of Ralph Waldo Emerson: With Annotations We have two needs, Being and Organization. See how much pains we take here in Plato's dialogues to set in order the One Fact in two or three or four steps, and renew as oft as we can the pleasure, the eternal surprise of coming at the last fact, as children run up steps to jump down, or up a hill to coast down on sleds, or run far for one slide, or as we get fishing-tackle and go many miles to a watering-place to catch fish, and having caught one and learned the whole mystery, we still repeat the process for the same result, though perhaps the fish are thrown overboard at the last. The merchant plays the same game on 'change, the card-lover at whist, and what else does the scholar? He knows how the poetry, he knows how the novel or the demonstration will affect him, no new result but the Oldest Of all, yet he still craves a new book and bathes himself anew with the plunge at the last. The young men here, this morning, who have tried all the six or seven things to be done, namely, .the sail, the bowling alley, the ride to Hull and to Cohasset, the bath, and the spyglass, they are in a rage just now to do something: these itching fingers, this short ac tivity, these nerves, this plasticity or creativeness accompanies forever and ever the Profound Being.
