Book Synopsis Extending Work Life by : Robert Clark
Download or read book Extending Work Life written by Robert Clark and published by W.E. Upjohn Institute. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging men and women are increasingly remaining in the labor force. Most often the reason for this is that they need to work additional years in order to be able to support an increasing number of years in retirement. This leaves employers scrambling for ways to adapt to a growing number of retirement-aged workers. Clark and Morrill provide a thorough assessment of the costs and benefits of accommodating later retirement ages, and they describe options employers may use to create some new form of employment contract with aging workers. The most prominent issues employers with aging workers face are declining productivity, rising labor and benefits costs, and a suboptimal age distribution of their workforces. According to the authors, employers could respond to these issues by finding new ways to accommodate older workers with, for instance, phased retirement and return-to-work policies. But the success of such policies also depends on tax policies and whether government-provided retirement benefits could be redesigned to play a role in a newly-defined employment relationship.

Often we are ill-prepared to make the life-changing transition from full-time employment, whether we leave by choice or not. Our professional work is an important part of our identity, and filling that void and making productive use of our time and skills can be a major challenge. Using case studies and insights gleaned from their consulting work, Mister and Hill present a roadmap to reinvent retirement and build a rewarding 'encore' career. Having a purpose is key to professional and personal fulfillment, and the authors show you how to evaluate your options and make informed decisions when it comes to your encore. What motivates and inspires you? What are your lifestyle and financial needs? How can you leave the legacy you desire? The authors include tools and exercises that encourage reflection, help you assess your strengths, and create a personal action plan to make your ideas a reality. Your encore can be the most exciting time of your life. From retraining in a new career path to making an impact by mentoring others or volunteering, a wealth of interesting possibilities awaits you! Book Synopsis Gaining The Dividends Of Longer Life by : Jarold A. Kieffer
Download or read book Gaining The Dividends Of Longer Life written by Jarold A. Kieffer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not all older people are unfit for work. Indeed, most people over age 55 remain physically and mentally able to work, and rather than suffer the pressures of inflation or the boredom of idleness, many would prefer to stay productive longer. Dr. Kieffer says that their extensive experience and education qualify most of them to remain self-reliant well past current retirement ages. If they are enabled to do so, it would delay and reduce the time when they are forced to be financially and, in some cases, physically dependent. He argues that unless policy leaders in both the public and private sectors act quickly and imaginatively to gain the financial and social dividends that can accrue from longer life, our country, by default, will find itself preoccupied over the next thirty years with unnecessarily high costs of supporting its longer-living and rapidly increasing older population. Dr. Kieffer explains why current retirement policies are no longer economically and politically manageable, and he suggests a cost-effective strategy whereby public and private funds could be used to enable millions of older people to remain active in jobs that serve unmet community needs. He also outlines a strategy for helping young workers build retirement income assets during their entire work lives so that the unintended burdens that have fallen on the Social Security, pension, and public assistance programs can be eased and made more manageable in the future. Lastly, he describes the roles that government agencies, businesses, educational institutions, foundations, and older people themselves can play in carrying out the jobs and retirement income strategies.
