Book excerpt: Results are presented to describe the laminar flow patterns around a prolate spheroid at angles of attack of 1, 2, 3, and 30 degrees and complement those obtained previously at 6 degrees. They were obtained by solving three-dimensional boundary-layer equations with a combination of standard and characteristic box methods and with a stability criterion to ensure numerical accuracy. Emphasis is placed on the nature of separation which, in agreement with experiment but contrary to some theoretical claims, is shown to be open for all angles of attack and to be coincident with a particular skin friction line. An approximate boundary layer technique is incorporated to allow the calculation of the line separation. The separated vortex sheets are modeled in terms of a vortex grid which is convected with the flow. Special conditions at separation determine the strength of nascent vorticity. Viscous inviscid interaction in three dimensions allows the accurate prediction of the line of separation and the pressure distribution over the attached flow region. In contrast to the high incidence (30 degrees) case recently reported, this extremely high incidence (45 degrees) problem is characterized by features reflecting the predominance of the circumferential flow over the meridional flow and, more importantly, by a closed, rather than an open, separation pattern. These features include much larger circumferential skin friction than meridional skin friction and that the limiting streamlines are more closely oriented along the parallels. (Author).

Book excerpt: Development of a new boundary layer code has reached the status to permit meaningful applications. Computations have been carried out for the initiation of separation in the symmetry plane of a prolate spheroid of slenderness ratio 1/4, impulsively started into forward motion at zero incidence and also at 50 degrees angle. This case serves as validation by comparing with previously published results of Xu and Wang (ref. 1), and also demonstrates that our method gives information of flow near the rear stagnation point not available in the literature. More studies have been performed on the optimization of surface suction to delay or prevent the unsteady separation for an impulsively started circular cylinder. Here the methodology should be of interest. Work on an unsteady three-dimensional thin-layer Navier-Stokes code, however, is progressing slowly.
