Jahrhundert in Deutschland wird in der Literatur als das bürgerliche bezeichnet. Es schwankte zwischen Einengung und dem Festhalten an feudalen Werten einerseits und dem Aufbruch aus diesen verfestigten und überholten System andererseits. Aber welche Rolle spielten die Frauen in diesem Aufbruch? Waren sie eine der treibenden Kräfte oder ist die zunehmende Emanzipation der Frauen im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert eher eine Nebenerscheinung des allgemeinen bürgerlichen Erstarkens und damit verbunden der idealen bürgerlichen Werte? In diesem Kontext sollen in der folgenden Arbeit drei wesentliche Punkte betrachtet werden Zum einen soll die Stellung der Frau sowohl in rechtlicher als auch in gesellschaftlicher Hinsicht untersucht werden. Gerade hier scheint ein fundamentaler Widerspruch zwischen dem bürgerlichem Ideal des freien, emanzipierten Individuum, wie es in der französischen Revolution auch proklamiert wurde, und der sozial-gesellschaftlichen Praxis im Deutschland des 19. Jahrhunderts zu existieren. Darauf aufbauend soll speziell auf die Rolle der Ehre eingegangen werden, welcher damals höchsten gesellschaftlichen Stellenwert genoss. Gerade die Ehre war der Frauen und insbesondere der bürgerlichen beinahe einziges Kapital. Ein Verlust brachte nicht nur gesellschaftliche Ächtung, sondern oftmals auch eine Bedrohung jeglicher Lebensgrundlagen mit sich. Im dritten Teil soll der scheinbare Ausbruch aus dem System, verkörpert durch die bürgerliche Frauenbewegung ab 1848, skizziert werden. Es soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, ob es den Frauen wirklich um eine Gleichstellung und Gleichbehandlung nach bürgerlichem Ideal ging oder ob die Frauenbewegung des ausgehenden 19. Jahrhunderts nicht doch innerhalb der bereits existierenden gesellschaftlichen Struktur und damit in der klassischen Rollenverteilung zwischen Mann und Frau verblieb. Betont sei an diese Stelle, dass der Fokus dieser Arbeit auf der Stellung der Bürgerlichen Frau und damit ebenso auf den Anfängen der bürgerlichen Frauenbewegung liegt. Die proletarische Frauenbewegung soll mit Rücksicht auf die hier verfolgte, spezielle Fragestellung weitgehend ausgeklammert bleiben. Um das umfassende Gebiet zu strukturieren, soll anhand der im folgenden vorgestellten Leitfragen das Thema bearbeitet werden.
