Book excerpt: At the foot of the Ortega Mountains on the flank of Cleveland National Forest, the 3,300-acre Lake Elsinore is one of Southern Californias more spectacular natural wonders. It is also the regions only large natural lake. The city of the same name on its shores was incorporated in 1888 through the efforts of financier Franklin H. Heald. His partner, D. M. Graham, fancifully wrote, We can imagine no more enchanting picture than Elsinore will present when the taste and energy of the settlers shall have made it a valley of fruit and flowers in the midst of which the lake shall lie like a priceless gem. Named after the castle in Shakespeares Hamlet, the lake and city proved to be a stopover spot for hunters and ranchers, eventually vacationers, and then water and motor sports aficionados. Today Lake Elsinore has a thriving population of about 30,000 year-round residents in the southwestern corner of Riverside County.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A precise and poetic argument for the renewal of transcendental philosophy. The great poets and thinkers of modernity described a situation we still inhabit today: the catastrophic undermining of all foundations, the disorienting relativization of all reference points, the prospect of abandonment to chance and contingency alone--the shipwreck of Mallarmé's Coup de dés. In this precise and poetic work of philosophy, Gabriel Catren sketches out a new "phenoumenodelic" solution to this momentous ungrounding, defiantly refusing both unrestrained contingency and arbitrary refoundation. Mobilizing a formidable knowledge of the major currents of modern thought, deftly articulating Kantian transcendentalism and Spinozan immanentism, phenomenological reduction, and scientific realism, Catren argues that the projects oriented by the infinite ideas of reason (Truth, Beauty, Justice, Love) need not be abandoned in the face of the "exquisite crisis" of modernity. Instead, the "shipwreck" is to be understood as a suspension of finite subjectivity in the fullness of a "phenoumenodelic pleroma," an atonal milieu ringing with unheard-of possibilities. Announcing an ambitious program for the renewal of transcendental philosophy, in Pleromatica Catren recomposes the primary elements of modern thought into a startling new configuration, introducing a vivid constellation of new concepts with which to map out and navigate the vast space of this "worldless daydream."

Book excerpt: The city of Lake Elsinore is home to Southern California's only natural lake. Since the 1800s, the lake has provided respite and recreation, beginning as a campsite for early pioneer travelers and later evolving into a world-class playground for the rich and famous. In 1951, Lake Elsinore's popularity suffered when the lake dried up, causing many of the recreational activities to move away. Today the lake is maintained at an ideal 1,240 feet above sea level and filled with weekend watercraft and fishermen, while families picnic nearby and the city enjoys a major growth in population and businesses.

Book excerpt: NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE RESCUE OF THE DANISH JEWS The rescue of the Danish Jews from German persecution during World War II remains a small yet very significant chapter in world history, as well as one of the proudest moments in Danish history. 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the remarkable event where so many Danes spontaneously mobilized to help defy the persecution of the Jews. In this new book, The Elsinore Sewing Club, interesting new perspectives are given on the event. The book tells the inspiring story of the Danish resistance group the Elsinore Sewing Club. During the winter of 1943-44 they played a crucial role in maintaining the connection between occupied Denmark and the free Sweden by daily illegal transports over the narrow strait, the Sound. The bookbinder Erling Kir defied his seasickness and sailed back and forth, day and night, through the tightly patrolled, ice-cold and mined waters. Illegally transporting refugees, resistance fighters, spies, courier post, weapons and other compromising material.Kir and the Sewing Club are especially well-known for their efforts in the rescue of the Danish Jews. It is estimated that they transported around 700 Jews to Sweden. For this action alone, the Sewing Club has gained an honorable place in world history - in the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, you will find one of the three boats they used, exhibited as a symbol of light in this otherwise dark chapter in mankind's history. Though much has already been written about the rescue of the Danish Jews, the book stands out in two ways. Firstly, it is the first study to closely examine the local infrastructure behind this impressive spontaneous humanitarian action. In the book you get to know the main characters (many of the stories in the book are rendered directly in the voices of the protagonists), get an insight into the group's work and wide-ranging organization. Secondly, it is a book that also clearly illustrates the high price that many of the helpers had to pay for their efforts - several of them even paid the ultimate price, killed either in action or in concentration camps. In the literature on the rescue of the Danish Jews it is often stated that the Germans were not that vigilant, giving the impression that the rescue operation was without much peril. The story of the Sewing Club gives a more nuanced picture. Though thoroughly researched - with many firsthand interviews and access to many previously unpublished sources - the book is written in a style for all to read. Book excerpt: The articles in this book address a variety of important topics related to the Sound Toll, ranging from its introduction and first troubled years in the late Middle Ages, via its administration and custom houses throughout the centuries, to its revenues and accounts from its inception until its demise. Along the way, the articles tell of Mother Sigbrit challenging the seafaring nations around 1520; of wars and international entanglements in the sixteenth century; of the fight for access to the Baltic export so vital to the growing populations of Western Europe; of how Christian IV severely raised the toll rates, with disastrous consequences; of the Swedish attack that led to the Torstenson War of 1643-45; of the loss of Halland and eventually, in 1658-60, also of Scania and Blekinge; and of the brazen smuggling carried out by English skippers in the 1700s.

Book excerpt: Islandology is a fast-paced, fact-filled comparative essay in critical topography and cultural geography that cuts across different cultures and argues for a world of islands. The book explores the logical consequences of geographic place for the development of philosophy and the study of limits (Greece) and for the establishment of North Sea democracy (England and Iceland), explains the location of military hot-spots and great cities (Hormuz and Manhattan), and sheds new light on dozens of world-historical productions whose motivating islandic aspect has not heretofore been recognized (Shakespeare's Hamlet and Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung). Written by Shell in view of the melting of the world's great ice islands, Islandology shows not only new ways that we think about islands but also why and how we think by means of them.
