Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time immemorial, younger women have been asking older women, "What is it like to have a baby?" Here at last is a book that brings together the reactions of a wide array of women--some rich, some poor, some famous, some not-so-famous--to the experience of childbirth. Ranging from Sophia Loren to Queen Victoria, from Colette to Elzire Dionne, it explains in human terms as no clinical description can what the experience of having a baby is really like. A universal process that is unique in each instance, birth is inherently dramatic and changes even people who never expected to be deeply affected. Indeed, some of the most revealing pieces in Ever Since Eve are the testimony of men about fatherhood, men as diverse as Napoleon and W.C. Fields. A fascinating collection of vignettes, Ever Since Eve examines childbirth in different parts of the globe, offers some intriguing footnotes to history, and presents a view of public figures in their most private moments. Compelling reading for every pregnant woman, this book will be a treasured keepsake for anyone who has ever had--or would like to have--a baby.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the voyages of exploration and surveying in the late 18th century, that of Alejandro Malaspina best represents the high ideals and scientific interests of the Enlightenment. In July 1789 he sailed from Cádiz in the purpose-built corvettes, Descubierta and Atrevida. On board the vessels were scientists and artists and an array of the latest surveying and astronomical instruments. The voyage lasted more than five years. On his return Malaspina was promoted Brigadier de la Real Armada, and began work on seven-volume account of the voyage, to dwarf the narratives of his predecessors in the Pacific such as Cook and Bougainville. But he became involved in political intrigue and was imprisoned from 1795 to 1803, then spending the last seven years of his life in obscure retirement in Italy. He never resumed work on the great edition, and his journal remained long unpublished. Only now is justice being done to the achievements of what for long was a forgotten voyage. This volume of a series of three contains Malaspina's diario or journal from 31 July 1789 to 14 December 1790, newly translated into English, with substantial introduction and commentary. Among the places visited and described are Montevideo, Puerto Deseado, Port Egmont, Puerto San Carlos, Valparaíso, Callao, Guayaquil and Panamá.

Book excerpt: More than twelve million immigrants, many of them children, passed through Ellis Island's gates between 1892 and 1954. Children also came through the "Guardian of the Western Gate," the detention center on Angel Island in California that was designed to keep Chinese immigrants out of the United States. Based on the oral histories of fifty children who came to the United States before 1950, this book chronicles their American odyssey against the backdrop of World Wars I and II, the rise and fall of Hitler's Third Reich, and the hardships of the Great Depression. Ranging in age from four to sixteen years old, the children hailed from Northern, Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe; the Middle East; and China. Across ethnic lines, the child immigrants' life stories tell a remarkable tale of human resilience. The sources of family and community support that they relied on, their educational aims and accomplishments, their hard work, and their optimism about the future are just as crucial today for the new immigrants of the twenty-first century. These personal narratives offer unique perspectives on the psychological experience of being an immigrant child and its impact on later development and well-being. They chronicle the joys and sorrows, the aspirations and achievements, and the challenges that these small strangers faced while becoming grown citizens.

This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reversibility is a thread woven through many branches of mathematics. It arises in dynamics, in systems that admit a time-reversal symmetry, and in group theory where the reversible group elements are those that are conjugate to their inverses. However, the lack of a lingua franca for discussing reversibility means that researchers who encounter the concept may be unaware of related work in other fields. This text is the first to make reversibility the focus of attention. The authors fix standard notation and terminology, establish the basic common principles, and illustrate the impact of reversibility in such diverse areas as group theory, differential and analytic geometry, number theory, complex analysis and approximation theory. As well as showing connections between different fields, the authors' viewpoint reveals many open questions, making this book ideal for graduate students and researchers. The exposition is accessible to readers at the advanced undergraduate level and above.
