Book excerpt: This volume endeavours to summarise all available data on the theorems on isomorphisms and their ever increasing number of possible applications. It deals with the theory of solvability in generalised functions of general boundary-value problems for elliptic equations. In the early sixties, Lions and Magenes, and Berezansky, Krein and Roitberg established the theorems on complete collection of isomorphisms. Further progress of the theory was connected with proving the theorem on complete collection of isomorphisms for new classes of problems, and hence with the development of new methods to prove these theorems. The theorems on isomorphisms were first established for elliptic equations with normal boundary conditions. However, after the Noetherian property of elliptic problems was proved without assuming the normality of the boundary expressions, this became the natural way to consider the problems of establishing the theorems on isomorphisms for general elliptic problems. The present author's method of solving this problem enabled proof of the theorem on complete collection of isomorphisms for the operators generated by elliptic boundary-value problems for general systems of equations. Audience: This monograph will be of interest to mathematicians whose work involves partial differential equations, functional analysis, operator theory and the mathematics of mechanics.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic boundary value problems for systems of mixed orders (Douglis-Nirenberg systems). For these problems the `theorem on complete collection of isomorphisms' is proven. Several applications in elasticity and hydrodynamics are treated. The book requires familiarity with the elements of functional analysis, the theory of partial differential equations, and the theory of generalized functions. Audience: This work will be of interest to graduate students and research mathematicians involved in areas such as functional analysis, partial differential equations, operator theory, the mathematics of mechanics, elasticity and viscoelasticity.

Book excerpt: It is the main aim of this book to develop at an accessible, moderate level an $L_2$ theory for elliptic differential operators of second order on bounded smooth domains in Euclidean n-space, including a priori estimates for boundary-value problems in terms of (fractional) Sobolev spaces on domains and on their boundaries, together with a related spectral theory. The presentation is preceded by an introduction to the classical theory for the Laplace-Poisson equation, and some chapters provide required ingredients such as the theory of distributions, Sobolev spaces and the spectral theory in Hilbert spaces. The book grew out of two-semester courses the authors have given several times over a period of ten years at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena. It is addressed to graduate students and mathematicians who have a working knowledge of calculus, measure theory and the basic elements of functional analysis (as usually covered by undergraduate courses) and who are seeking an accessible introduction to some aspects of the theory of function spaces and its applications to elliptic equations.

Book excerpt: The theory of elliptic boundary problems is fundamental in analysis and the role of spaces of weakly differentiable functions (also called Sobolev spaces) is essential in this theory as a tool for analysing the regularity of the solutions. This book offers on the one hand a complete theory of Sobolev spaces, which are of fundamental importance for elliptic linear and non-linear differential equations, and explains on the other hand how the abstract methods of convex analysis can be combined with this theory to produce existence results for the solutions of non-linear elliptic boundary problems. The book also considers other kinds of functional spaces which are useful for treating variational problems such as the minimal surface problem. The main purpose of the book is to provide a tool for graduate and postgraduate students interested in partial differential equations, as well as a useful reference for researchers active in the field. Prerequisites include a knowledge of classical analysis, differential calculus, Banach and Hilbert spaces, integration and the related standard functional spaces, as well as the Fourier transformation on the Schwartz space. There are complete and detailed proofs of almost all the results announced and, in some cases, more than one proof is provided in order to highlight different features of the result. Each chapter concludes with a range of exercises of varying levels of difficulty, with hints to solutions provided for many of them.

Book excerpt: The theory of boundary value problems for elliptic systems of partial differential equations has many applications in mathematics and the physical sciences. The aim of this book is to "algebraize" the index theory by means of pseudo-differential operators and new methods in the spectral theory of matrix polynomials. This latter theory provides important tools that will enable the student to work efficiently with the principal symbols of the elliptic and boundary operators on the boundary. Because many new methods and results are introduced and used throughout the book, all the theorems are proved in detail, and the methods are well illustrated through numerous examples and exercises. This book is ideal for use in graduate level courses on partial differential equations, elliptic systems, pseudo-differential operators, and matrix analysis.

Book excerpt: This book, which is based on several courses of lectures given by the author at the Independent University of Moscow, is devoted to Sobolev-type spaces and boundary value problems for linear elliptic partial differential equations. Its main focus is on problems in non-smooth (Lipschitz) domains for strongly elliptic systems. The author, who is a prominent expert in the theory of linear partial differential equations, spectral theory and pseudodifferential operators, has included his own very recent findings in the present book. The book is well suited as a modern graduate textbook, utilizing a thorough and clear format that strikes a good balance between the choice of material and the style of exposition. It can be used both as an introduction to recent advances in elliptic equations and boundary value problems and as a valuable survey and reference work. It also includes a good deal of new and extremely useful material not available in standard textbooks to date. Graduate and post-graduate students, as well as specialists working in the fields of partial differential equations, functional analysis, operator theory and mathematical physics will find this book particularly valuable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph focusses on a large class of variational elliptic problems with mixed boundary conditions on domains with various corner singularities, edges, polyhedral vertices, cracks, slits. In a natural functional framework (ordinary Sobolev Hilbert spaces) Fredholm and semi-Fredholm properties of induced operators are completely characterized. By specially choosing the classes of operators and domains and the functional spaces used, precise and general results may be obtained on the smoothness and asymptotics of solutions. A new type of characteristic condition is introduced which involves the spectrum of associated operator pencils and some ideals of polynomials satisfying some boundary conditions on cones. The methods involve many perturbation arguments and a new use of Mellin transform. Basic knowledge about BVP on smooth domains in Sobolev spaces is the main prerequisite to the understanding of this book. Readers interested in the general theory of corner domains will find here a new basic theory (new approaches and results) as well as a synthesis of many already known results; those who need regularity conditions and descriptions of singularities for numerical analysis will find precise statements and also a means to obtain further one in many explicit situtations.

Book excerpt: Focussing on the interrelations of the subjects of Markov processes, analytic semigroups and elliptic boundary value problems, this monograph provides a careful and accessible exposition of functional methods in stochastic analysis. The author studies a class of boundary value problems for second-order elliptic differential operators which includes as particular cases the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, and proves that this class of boundary value problems provides a new example of analytic semigroups both in the Lp topology and in the topology of uniform convergence. As an application, one can construct analytic semigroups corresponding to the diffusion phenomenon of a Markovian particle moving continuously in the state space until it "dies", at which time it reaches the set where the absorption phenomenon occurs. A class of initial-boundary value problems for semilinear parabolic differential equations is also considered. This monograph will appeal to both advanced students and researchers as an introduction to the three interrelated subjects in analysis, providing powerful methods for continuing research.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the analysis of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions that describe singularities of solutions to elliptic boundary value problems in domains with corners and edges. The authors treat both classical problems of mathematical physics and general elliptic boundary value problems. The volume is divided into two parts: The first is devoted to the power-logarithmic singularities of solutions to classical boundary value problems of mathematical physics. The second deals with similar singularities for higher order elliptic equations and systems. Chapter 1 collects basic facts concerning operator pencils acting in a pair of Hilbert spaces. Related properties of ordinary differential equations with constant operator coefficients are discussed and connections with the theory of general elliptic boundary value problems in domains with conic vertices are outlined. New results are presented. Chapter 2 treats the Laplace operator as a starting point and a model for the subsequent study of angular and conic singularities of solutions. Chapter 3 considers the Dirichlet boundary condition beginning with the plane case and turning to the space problems. Chapter 4 investigates some mixed boundary conditions. The Stokes system is discussed in Chapters 5 and 6, and Chapter 7 concludes with the Dirichlet problem for the polyharmonic operator. Chapter 8 studies the Dirichlet problem for general elliptic differential equations of order 2m in an angle. In Chapter 9, an asymptotic formula for the distribution of eigenvalues of operator pencils corresponding to general elliptic boundary value problems in an angle is obtained. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss the Dirichlet problem for elliptic systems of differential equations of order 2 in an n-dimensional cone. Chapter 12 studies the Neumann problem for general elliptic systems, in particular with eigenvalues of the corresponding operator pencil in the strip $\mid {\Re} \lambda - m + /2n \mid \leq 1/2$. It is shown that only integer numbers contained in this strip are eigenvalues. Applications are placed within chapter introductions and as special sections at the end of chapters. Prerequisites include standard PDE and functional analysis courses.

Book excerpt: A co-publication of the AMS and Centre de Recherches Mathématiques In this monograph the authors study the well-posedness of boundary value problems of Dirichlet and Neumann type for elliptic systems on the upper half-space with coefficients independent of the transversal variable and with boundary data in fractional Hardy–Sobolev and Besov spaces. The authors use the so-called “first order approach” which uses minimal assumptions on the coefficients and thus allows for complex coefficients and for systems of equations. This self-contained exposition of the first order approach offers new results with detailed proofs in a clear and accessible way and will become a valuable reference for graduate students and researchers working in partial differential equations and harmonic analysis.
