Book excerpt: Ella Kate Ewing was born in 1872. She started out small, but she just kept on growing. Soon she was too tall for her desk at school, too tall for her bed at home, too tall to fit anywhere. Ella Kate was a real-life giant, but she refused to hide herself away. Instead, she used her unusual height to achieve her equally large dreams. The masterful Klise sisters deliver a touching and inspiring true story about a strong-minded girl who finally embraced her differences. It's the perfect book for every child who has ever felt like an outsider.

Book excerpt: What would you do if you suddenly realized you had the choice to change how you lived? Would you follow the path you’re on or take a risk, knowing it could mean letting go of everything and everyone familiar? Ella Staines appears to live a happy, busy life in a leafy suburb; she has a husband in a good profession, grown-up kids who come and go, and fulfilling work. So why does she feel as if she’s suffocating? Has she really forgotten who she is? Ella sets out on a journey that questions the very concept of marriage. Her quest for deeper meaning and a different understanding of spirituality leads to unexpected results that threaten to tip her over the edge. Along the way, she encounters some of her old demons—patterns, power trips, and egoistic ways—that had seemed so comfortable and that had once defined her existence. Now she must swim away from them to build a new life for herself, no matter where that may lead. In this novel, a woman leaves her life behind—her thirty-year marriage, home, family, and friends—to search for a new meaning and purpose for herself.

Book excerpt: 'Bardi pushes a lot of hot buttons' Publishers Weekly Set in Chicago, 1975, Double Take is the story of artsy Rachel Cochrane, who returns from college with no job and confronts the recent death of Bando, one of her best friends. When she runs into Joey, a mutual friend, their conversations take them back into their shared past and to the revelation that Bando may have been murdered. To find out who murdered him, Rachel is forced to revisit her stormy 1960s adolescence, a journey that brings her into contact with her old friends, her old self, and danger. Surprising and haunting, this is an insightful reminiscence of a time of naivety, danger and renewal. PRAISE FOR ABBY BARDI 'compelling ... evocative ... When his motorcycle is stolen, he feels he's lost the one thing that connects him to his dad--and keeps his dad's memory alive. Harley believes he knows exactly who is responsible--and takes dangerously reckless steps to get his bike back. Parker will do almost anything to help his friend--which is exactly what has Jelly and Ella worried. Their efforts to change Harley's self-destructive course simply haven't worked. Now they have to find a way to stop him before he goes off the deep end . . . and takes Parker with him. Sometimes lies and deception are so believable that only God can reveal the truth. And every person has a push-point. Something that--if given enough pressure--has the power to send them someplace they never want to go. Off the deep end. The Deep End is the third book in the High Water series. It blends contemporary mystery and suspense, dramatic situations, and high adventure that 12- to 15-year-old boys and girls will love.

Book excerpt: Carol Milford is a free-spirited young woman who marries Will Kennicott, a small-town doctor. After they marry, Will convinces Carol to move to his home town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota. Unimpressed by the backwardness of the town, Carole embarks on a crusade of civic reform that is not received welcomingly. This text is highly recommended for fans and collectors of Lewis's work, and it would make for a great addition to any bookshelf. Harry Sinclair Lewis (1885 - 1951) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and playwright. He became the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. Many antiquarian books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now, in an affordable, high-quality, modern edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned biography of the author.

Book excerpt: Carol Milford grows up in a mid-sized town in Minnesota before moving to Chicago for college. After her education, during which she’s exposed to big-city life and culture, she moves to Minneapolis to work as a librarian. She soon meets Will Kennicott, a small-town doctor, and the two get married and move to Gopher Prairie, Kennicott’s home town. Carol, inspired by big-city ideas, soon begins chafing at the seeming quaintness and even backwardness of the townsfolk, and their conservative, self-satisfied way of life. She struggles to try to reform the town in her image, while finding meaning in the seeming cultural desert she’s found herself in and in her increasingly cold marriage. Gopher Prairie is a detailed, satirical take on small-town American life, modeled after Sauk Centre, the town in which Lewis himself grew up. The town is fully realized, with generations of inhabitants interacting in a complex web of village society. Its bitingly satirical portrayal made Main Street highly acclaimed by its contemporaries, though many thought the satirical take was perhaps a bit too dark and hopeless. The book’s celebration and condemnation of small town life make it a candidate for the title of the Great American Novel. Main Street was awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, but the decision was overturned by the prize’s Board of Trustees and awarded instead to Edith Wharton for The Age of Innocence. When Lewis went on to win the 1926 Pulitzer for Arrowsmith, he declined it—with the New York Times reporting that he did so because he was still angry at the Pulitzers for being denied the prize for Main Street. Despite the book’s snub at the Pulitzers, Lewis went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, with Main Street being cited as one of the reasons for his win.
